  • operatic lol wtf... isn't this falsetto or head voice or something idk..

  • Mariah fans are such haters...sad.

  • 1:16 whitney sang La Madonna E mobil with pavarroti. She is adept with opera in her prime. wow!

  • flawless vibrato

  • Opera singers don't need a mic

  • @MusicLuver093 What do u mean by that? Opera singers always use mic if they are performing for a large audience. Ur comment is ludicrous.

  • @arwjr1982 Do your research before you comment, please. Opera singers do NOT uses microphones. Maria Callas, Jessye Norman, Joan Sutherland, Montserrant Caballe etc. each sopranos. Stop wasting my time, take a seat.

  • @MusicLuver093 U make it sound as if this is due to their ability...the theatre is constructed to allow the sound to travel. I've seen opera singers use microphones and I did my research. I guess Kathleen Battle, Pavaroti, Bocelli , and all the others I've seen use a mic are not "true"opera singers? SIGH

  • @arwjr1982 Yes, it is constructed to aid the sound however they're trained specifically to learn how to project their voices at higher amplitudes to be heard over orchestra symphonies. They use something called vocal resonance and balance which is a technique opera singers use to push their sound through their nasal cavity, mouth, and throat. They uniquely shape their voices to produces extra frequencies around 3000hz to the orchestra's 800hz.

  • @MusicLuver093 even in a huge stadium? ha! hilarious... what are they gods?

  • @stevesg92 If you read my comment you would see that I was referring to halls where opera singers perform. Obviously if they were to sing in an extremely large venue they sound would be smaller, but like I said, halls are constructed specifically to aid the sound travel. It's common sense. All I'm saying is Whitney uses a different technique than opera singers do. Whitney doesn't sing for the purpose of being loud, because she has a mic. Opera singers have a different technique with no mic.

  • Those were not operatic, but it's still good.

  • LMAO, I cannot listen any operatic note but the one in 1:20.

  • CRACK IS WHACK. ONCE ON, THERES NO TURNING BACK

  • She performed with Luciano Pavarotti??

  • Comment removed

  • @MrDTJones1 Not a whistle like...Mariah Carey? MC sold over 200M albums worldwide, just FYI.

  • wooo eeee oooo eeee oooooo eeeeeeeee oooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!

  • bull #@!... I've got a Master's in voice... and that's anything but "operatic"

  • a masters degree threw the mail apparently...on cassette.

  • It's actually from Appalachian State University... and I can tell you my opinion on vocal technique is more valid than yours... you're still learning how to speak English..... It's "THROUGH the mail" not "THREW the mail"... go back to 3rd grade

  • @Slick411 App State has a great music program :-)

  • my ears are bleeding.

  • @sammyBBes Then you need to wipe your ears because how can a beautiful head voice like hers makes one ears bleed?!

  • Celine Dion is better...

  • @kcoyle673 THAT'S THE TRUTH(IT"S LIKE A PATTI VS AN ARETHA THING)

  • I cannot see WHERE opera comes into this!?

  • I don't care if they are operatic or not, they sound amazing. lol

  • The poster of this video is as ignorant of Opera as Whitney's voice is beautiful.

  • she doesn't need to open her mouth..she can do what she want.....choops

  • great, however the technique is incorrect, Opera singer should open their mouth like O , is it?

  • @RaciouS91 the technique is incorrect, there is also a bit of "air" in her voice which is not very desirable among opera singers(it has to do with the technique)

  • Hott damn, who in this universe can top this?

  • sound like a damn ghost

  • now this is operatic....i dont know wth beyonce thought opera was but this is a nice mix of r&b and opera.....long live whitney

  • Does anyone know what song she's singing from 1:03 - 1:11? Where can I find that video clip? Thanks!

  • @giomark

She is singing 'In return' live.. I think in Japan. It's fantastic and that has to be one of my favourite bits from that performance.

  • These notes sound beautiful but I wouldn't call them operatic. Maybe that's just me

  • @madaboutmariah I just saw it said operAtic! lol :)

  • @madaboutmariah Sorry, had to vote this one down. These notes are very operatic mixed with pop stylings. Whitney, and herself only was amazingly able to bridge the two.

  • this is b4 drugs can we just say nice vid or beautiful voice why must we talk about drugs gosh!!! i love whitney and seeing little vidz like this good job!

  • Young whitney without druggs

  • = ='

  • I am just so sad that she did those drugs and lost her voice forever.

  • Whitney is just FANTASTIC!..... the best voice there has ever been!!! I know only the last clip was really operatic but :O it was 100% fantastic opera! I would of loved to of heard Whitney do a lot of opera (even though i dont listen to opera music) because she sounded amazing at opera in that last clip and it would be good to hear what she could actually do opera wise :) GO WHITNEY! THE BEST SINGER OF ALL TIME!

  • this is just head voice . not really bel canto/opera like technique besides the last clip

  • @richzero0 hey I always wondered how can you tell the difference from hearing it?

  • @PhillyGirl1 the voice placement is different. with resonance designed to fill a room, the voice is much more booming rather than soft.

compare the first clip to the last clip. you'll hear the difference.

though an opera can sing softy with that technique there is usually much more power than a pop head voice technique.

and also just look at the shape of whitneys mouth when singing this, then compare it to another female opera singer.

  • ya...um thats not opera...just saying... i love whitney but thats not what that is.... the only thing that was slightly operatic was the very last and very fuzzy clip :)

  • ya...um thats not opera...just saying... i love whitney but thats not what that is

  • Female opera singers can belt & there are several who do belt but generally belting in the female voice is considered harmful & this might be true if you look at how long opera singers voices last & stay in good condition in comparison to modern music singers. Belting puts more pressure on the vocal chords than the Bel Canto opera singing technique does. Male opera singers also do not belt, they use a combination of mixed resonance, like Pavarotti etc...

  • @Chanteuredelopera do you mean they belt in opera? can you give any examples?

  • BTW I wonder how does that work the other way. I mean does anyone have the clip of Maria Callas belting??? :)

  • I don`t want to destroy your illusions, but the highest note I can hear in your vid is an a, a third too low to serv as a high c. And an opera singer needs NO mikrophone, of course. Thank god, Whitney - one of the best singers of our time - never claimed to be an opera singer!

  • @zehnthaus She certainly could have been if she'd liked to. And this vid isn't a vocal range showcase apparently from the title.

  • Whitney is forever my Queen ..thank you Whitney for the best music out there.

  • operatic notes? Just look how close the microphone is to her mouth! A true operatic note is given by a true operatic soprano who has the microphone several feet away from her mouth! Trully Whitney is not he only one who crack has left wack!

  • OMG my ears! theyre bleeding!!

  • @MalakaShakalaka LOLOLOLOLOL

  • @bandycandy How's this the worst video, she is the greatest singer of all-time?

  • Whitney may not be an opera singer, but she difinitely comes close to one. She's able to use vibrato in her head voice like an opera singer. No only her head voice is perfect, but her chest voice too. She has a great coloratura and she probably could became an opera singer and have done dramatic coloratura pieces too. That G5 at 1:03 is beautiful and the G5 at 1:20 is so voluinous and powerful!

  • Celine made an operatic song called La Diva. check it out

  • @muskiskoka #1- There is NOTHING operatic about it.

#2- This isn't a Celine video. Go and "promote" her somewhere else.

  • @Chimier Staker, Psycho why are you stalking me from video to video. Go find something to do. You're annoying!

  • @muskiskoka Stalking you? Don't flatter yourself. I'm a Whitney fan. I go on her vids all the time and I happen to find you here...promoting Celine..HAHAHAHA too funny!

  • @Chimier Yes same as how you commented on a previous Celine video I was just on. Get a clue or a life.

  • @muskiskoka It's called COMMENTING, not stalking, bitch. Get a brain.

FYI, it wasn't a Celine video, it was a Celine, Aretha, Mariah, Shania, Carole and Gloria video. Ooops!

  • @muskiskoka Anyway, the point is "La Diva" isn't classical in the least. Get a clue, bitch, and use it. I love it when you stans have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

  • @Chimier I said La Diva was "operatic" I didn't claim it to be opera. Do you know the difference between adjectives and nouns. Operatic describes an air, flavor or sentiment of the music. Open your eyes and comprehend in your thick skull if that's at all possible.

  • @muskiskoka "Operatic" means "pertaining to opera", so it's very synonymous. And again, NO it's not. There's nothing operatic about it. Go and learn about opera first.

  • @Chimier If you would open up your dirty ears you would know that Celine sang the last verse alongside Maria Callas. But of course you haven't a clue, commenting something you have no knowledge of. You are a ridiculous and Total failure.

  • @muskiskoka Because singing alongside an opera singer makes something operatic. That means that if I put on a Mahalia Jackson record and sing along with her, it's gospel. HAHAHA sit.

  • @Chimier Celine was singing opera alongside her.

    Finish.

    Final.

    The End.

  • @muskiskoka Or not. That doesn't make it operatic. If that was the case, I could sing alongside Pavarotti, thus my singing must be operatic. #FAIL

    Get a brain, stupid.

  • @muskiskoka Oh, look! This dog is singing alongside an opera singer: /watch?v=ocCMkfBdxPU

    Operatic!!!!! LMAO...NEXT!

  • @muskiskoka I have problems explaining stuff to Chimier too. Just be careful he doesn't hurl swear words your way cause I had to continuously rebuke him for his primitive behaviour ;)

  • @pegasus2001c You had problem explaining stuff because you didn't KNOW. Moving on...

  • @pegasus2001c Chimier thinks Whitney is singing opera but when he hears Celine really singing it in the last refrain of La Diva he thinks it's not. Lol

  • @muskiskoka Where did I say Whitney was singing opera? Nowhere. You should sue the surgeon who worked on your brain.

  • @muskiskoka Do you see how sick in the head Chimier is? It is now fantasising about you having a brain surgery when the reality is, it is badly in need of one. Earlier on it thought I'm a man when I'm a woman. Makes me wonder what other fantasy Chimier has of us or anyone else it seeks to attack, LOL!

  • @pegasus2001c "It is now fantasising about you having a brain surgery when the reality is"- Your mind is so twisted I should feel sorry for you. The way you think your incoherent babble is well-thought out and effective.

"Earlier on it thought I'm a man when I'm a woman"- No one cares what you are. When someone's on youtube, no one knows...or cares what you are behind the screen.

LOL thanks for proving you're a fucked up moron. Get well soon.

  • @Chimier Your habit is to make assumptions of people. If they disagree with you, you attack them like your life depended on it. Amazing! The fact you resort to swear swords shows you are a very uncivilized person. Get a life please!

  • @pegasus2001c I make assumptions on what is presented in front of me. If you act stupid, I'll assume you're stupid. That simple. And I attack people when they attack me. Try again.

    Get a brain first.

  • @bandycandy lol i know right, what a racket is right

  • @pegasus2001c i know right, he needs to get a life off yout ube. what a dork lol

  • from 10 to 14 seconds she looked like Michael Jackson!

  • these are not operatic notes. they are being produced through tension and not on the air!!! she is more of a mixed voice, but her placement and breathing are not operatic!!!

  • GONE WHITNEY!

  • she was dramatic soprano!!!!!!!!! not mezzosoprano...1:03-1:11, 1:12-1:15, 1:20-1:24 are the proof...now she is dramatic mezzo, but until the 1994 she was dramatic soprano!!!

  • @aNdReW16944ever she could never be a mezzo, much less a dramatic mezzo lool. She was a lyric soprano at her peak. She then was a spinto soprano for the rest of her career .

  • theres nothing operatic about her voice, at all.

  • @skitzo429 The last one wasn't operatic? hmmm I know if I heard someone do what she did in the last clip OPERA would come to mind....

  • where is that video from at 0:21?

  • @deon424702 "Home" - Live from "The Concert For A New South Africa", 1994.

  • The best head voice for a pop singer i've ever heard!!!

  • 00:17-00:27- My fav part of the whole vid!

  • The last bit of her sounding like a dramatic soprano is fabulous, the rest are of course more of a falsetto, either way...her vibratto was always fabulous and perfect.

  • MARIAH CAREY IS THE BEST!!!

  • Sounds nice but there not operatic, I teach opera and if one of my student sung the high notes like this I would not have them in my program. She is using her falsetto, any soprano can do that. There is absolutly nothing special about this.

  • @ledzeppelin104 What about the part where she was singing with those opera people!!

  • @ledzeppelin104

May i ask you something cause i m student of operatic singing, you wrote that she use falsetto, i m just wondering, since when women do have one? only man like countertenors sing with falsetto..

  • YES!!! Sing Whitney. She should have released an opera album in her prime.

  • It sounds like her falsetto. I'm no expert, but I dont think that qualifies as an opera voice. Sopranos do not use falsetto. Please educate me.

  • @wrs7836 I agree with you. Normaly opera singers don´t use falsetto when they hit high notes, but you have said "sopranos" and Witney is a mezzo. I have searched it in the Wikipedia. She sound similar to Katherine Jenkins, a great american mezzosoprano, in her high notes.

  • @Raf90pazen

Katherine is not a mezzo, she is a short soprano with no high or low notes. Whitney in her prime was a soprano, later on her voice went lower because of her drug use.

  • @wrs7836 You are correct, and incorrect. It is here false, or, her "head"...yes. It's NOT operatic notes (except the last song). BUT, you're wrong that Sopranos do not use false. Folks use false as they so choose. Whitney is a Mezzo, and could hit higher, stronger chest notes than most all-out Sopranos; she was a high Soprano when she hit the scene. She used head for the beauty of it; not because she couldn't hit the actual note w/her chest. You do have a good ear, though...

  • 1:04 - 1:11 CLEAN!! The best.

  • I'm afraid, you've got no idea what opera singing is. AND we, opera singers, can do also both head and chest, but we use it in the way that let you hear us in biggest concerthalls WITHOUT any microphones. just don't compare 2 totaly different things.

  • @aniaen Amen ;)

  • The BEST VOICE IN THE WORLD!

  • It's so tragic and sad that she can't sing like this anymore.

  • Too bad she cant sing like this anymore

  • haha put some new things :D

  • What song is that in yellow @ 1:04 GOSH that run!

  • was that last one whitney???

  • its a shame she trashed her voice

  • notice she always has a microphone... the opera singers don't it is one voice against a full symphony orchestra.. check out.. MIRELLA FRENI SINGS "IO SON L'UMILE ANCELLA"

  • put that notes in your ass idit faggs get a life than dream that one day you will be whitney

  • What performance is 1.10??

    It's amazing!

  • This is definitely not opera singing nor opera notes. I strongly urge you to look on here for REAL opera singers!!! On or two high notes does not opera singing make.

  • Whether they are "operatic" or not, I think these notes have a ghostly sort of beauty.

  • There is nothing operatic about those notes or her technique...lol.

  • this is actually quite funny listening to whitney go "oooooooooooooooooooo" nonstop for that long. i like the actual opera part at the end most of all!

  • That notes gonna give me fucking nightmares now lol

  • To be quite honest Whitneys Mom Cissy Houston can probably hit those high opera notes with ease. She's 100% Saprano and sounds beautiful doing it. Check her out when you get a chance.

  • neither Whitney nor Mariah sing REAL opera....

  • who cares about real opera. chile get over yourself.

  • @pearpeas um, lots of people

  • It's not that special Mariah Carey grew up singing opera so it's not so special either way they're both great except most females can sing opera style notes. but i would say mariah has a more opera worthy voice since she has pronunciation with her notes whitney doesn't have full pronunciation grasp but nonetheless she carries it out well.

  • Incredible! When you think of the whistle notes Mariah utilizes(mimicking Minnie Riperton), it no were near compares to Whitney Houstons immense vocal range. It makes me sad to see how Whitney has ended up. She will never regain that vocal quality ever again. Her nasal cavity and vocal chords are too scarred from drug use.

  • Well she can't that anymore!

    CRACK IS WHACK EVERYBODY!

  • uuuuuuuuuf.... I lost my breath when I heard this..... divine..... :)

  • Sounds kinda creepy

  • not quite operatic... but pleasent nonetheless ;)

  • Comment removed

  • Mariah can only do the whistle notes. She's not that good of an overall singer. Whitney is the better overall singer.

  • @BWABIESD1 Whitney could do whistle notes too so Mariah could sit down.

  • ur right shes better

  • whitney do opera fuck off lol she aint got the voice or range

  • She did back then. SO U FUCK OFF

  • Agreed these are not 'opera notes'. All she is doing is using vibrato, which I can see how you might equate it with opera, since use of vibrato generally requires skill.

  • no she isnt especially when she was with Pavarotti. It was Opera

  • What is the purpose of this video? Whitney is not an opera singer. She's a great singer, and no one can take that from her, but what is the point of comparing her singing to opera when it's clearly not?

  • Whitney has what you call a all around voice. There are gereat singers all ovwer the place no doubt about that, but even if you can't see it yet one day you will know that Whitney was a rare type of voice. Opera singers sing one way,but WH was able to take you to different place with her type of vocie. I respect so many great singers but truth be told WH is in a class all by herself when it comes to just pure voice.

  • not even close

  • honey, the opera singers can do one thing, whitney can do both head voice and chest voice perfectly.

  • I did not say she´s not any good. She is. But its not opera notes.

  • @whfan007 and Whitney could do whistle register right whfan007! Whitney could sing every register of the voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @whfan007 what a ridiculous thing to say, search Maria Callas

  • @whfan007 He's right, thats no where near opera. Opera is the art of projecting the voice to dominate distance and other orchestral instruments.

  • @whfan007 He's right, that's not opera singing. Opera is the art of projecting the voice, without the use of a mic, over large distances and other orchestral ensembles.

  • @whfan007 Operatic sopranos use their chest voices beautifully in many arias.

  • @whfan007 hahaha. really? that's your rebuttle? hahahahaha.

  • @whfan007 if you would like to hear an opera singer singing in both chest voice and head voice in the same song i can send you something and you would feel really stupid for writing what you did

  • @whfan007 well unfortunately while I agree that whiteny Houston is a great pop and soul singer, you cannot compare an opera singer to a pop singer, and you are totally wrong when you say an opera singer can only do one thing

  • @whfan007 Sorry but she cant hold the head voice like an opera singer... and I swear that they can hold chest voice better than Whitney

  • @adr14ntr Huh? Most opera singers don't use head, so, what are you talking about? Plus, Whitney could do amazing "super-head", as well as belt full voice, and even whistle. She could have been an opera singer if she so chose, and been a great opera singer. Do you even know anything about singing?

  • @stevie586 Can you please show me a clip of her doing Whistle register!!!1 PLEASE!!!

  • @whfan007 honey, opera singers can sing in a 4,000-seat auditorium without a microphone. whitney, even in her prime, couldn't do that.

  • @stryker704 Huh? What are you talking about? Clearly, you are not a singer. First of all, Whitney COULD do that. Opera singers do not sell volume; they sell power and control. Yes, I sing opera, classical...I can give it all to you. Whitney gave everything they give and more. VOLUME, does not equal power; actually, we singers practice LOW volume with great STRENGTH & control. So, get it right. Whitney had range, height, control, and unmatched power. Get it right.

  • @whfan007 no way, she's singing along with a big large falsetto combined with a vibrato, not made by her chest, but by her own throat, althought she's got a great voice, but not for opera, and i'm still thinking she's got one of best popular voices ever and she could reach a lyric voice, but it'll demand so much air, take out the mic and you'll see, but, i repeat, she's got maybe the most incredible popular voice, or have had

  • @whfan007 can you please block the person who said that? that really annoyed me lol

  • @whfan007 Opera singers can do a lot of things. Their chest voice is extremely powerful, it has to be. And they know how to use it.

  • @cheppelin78 Honey then you don't know what opera is obviously

  • lol, ahaha, operetic... that's funny...

  • Opera? ahahahah search for yma sumac here on youtube

  • typical pop singer...don't get me wrong she obviously was truely talented. however. you can't even compare this to opera....none of this was opera. obviously whoever posted this knows nothing about singing or opera :/

  • You don't think 1:20 was?

  • 1:20 sound like a really really bad opera singer...honestly. It sounds like someone trying to imitate one and failing.

  • Well i bet you couldn't do it.
