  • cool :D

i didn't do this with my old bird and they trusted me but this may work even better

  • Useful and brilliant advice! Thank you :)

  • Merlin is awesome, hehe. This is great advice!

  • the bird bit him

  • how can i train my amazon parrot not to bite me when he's sitting on my lap?? he tends to do that just sitting there. he won't let me pet him unless he's in his cage, how can i get him to let me pet him without him biting me???

  • they meant the owner shedding blood.

    Get it?

cAUSE THE BIRD BITES THE OWNER

    oops capslock...srry

  • The mean that when it bites blood comes out.

  • soeone please explain me what the clicker does:S

  • My bird bites for fun. He's very sweet and I can hold him with no problem. He even likes to be held like a baby and have his wing pits scratched. But unforunately, he also likes to sink his beak into anyone around for fun and when he is upset about something. I have no idea how to proceed. All of the information online about bird biting is for birds that are not comfortable with their human.

  • Biting hard! In some cases literally shedding blood! I was never really bothered by it with Budgies as they are so much smaller and when trust is gained they certainly know the difference between biting hard and nibbling! A parrot has a huge beak so I imagine it could be pretty painful! Still, as soon as I get the space I'm going to get one - quite a challange and a friend for life..

  • Wow, that is amazing.. I dont know about the silly hats but that is an excellent method for arkward birds.. How do you do these tricks though, initially I mean? Be a baby? Wow!

  • wow, I cannot wait to try this when we get our new bird soon

  • I too clicker train my budgie and he sometimes touches the target stichk but then just stares at the millet.

DoesnT that "water" the clicker training, because he gets no reward (even if I present it to him)?

  • I just got a lovebird a few days ago, actually it found me. It flew out of my gutters and into my truck. I now have it in a cage, but when I go to stick my hand in to give it food or toys, it tries to bite me. How do I break this? How can I get him to trust me?

  • wow, that bird was sitting still. If I let out my bird, it flies away, so first I need to teach it to not to fly away lol, I wonder how you do that.

  • Very nice video! Helpful! Thank a lot

  • my amazon lets me pet him and hand feed him but if hes on his cage will not step up onto my hand he jkust attacks my cloths or just backs away from me but if he flys on the floor i can then pick him up can anyone help?

  • um this doesn't work at all... My bird runs away from rewards like fruits/nuts/what not. Anything i hold near it's face, it runs away from. Even the millet seed it eats. it's pupils dialate really fast and it makes a squawking noise and flies away.

  • I need help I tried your method but my bird is affarid of the touch target.

  • Mine too -_-

  • Wow! I use clicker training on my dogs, but I had no idea that it could be used on birds! I got two Parakeets last week, I'll try it with them too.

  • i would love to try this technique, but i can get my parrot out of his cage, when ever i try to he'll try to bite my hand, any help on this one ?

  • can't u try it in the cage first? then lure ur bird out with the stick

    or something like tht anyway

  • I though you usually do clicker training with pets like... uh, dogs. I'm very suprised! This looks interesting. :D

  • u don't need a clicker, you can just click your tounge

  • aw i love his little wave at the end. "wanna be a cockatoo" what a cutie!

  • When she puts on that mask, the parrot is like "oh guys... damn ya all... you think im THAT stupid? geez!" Hilarious! :D

  • how do i get my two lovebirds to not bite me

  • hi iv got an amazon yellow head parrot witch is a very good talker but over the years it started 2 get really vishios, we cant even make him come near any 1 without him trying to draw blood, hes about 15years old now, after watchin your video i am goin2 have a go ov the clicker method, fingers crossed, we are all pritty scared ov goin near him now tho. how long per day should you try this method.

  • Thanks so much for this vid. I am looking to get a Tiel. and I want to make sure I can learn as much as possible before I do so.

  • i want to use this method but i cant even get my budgie out of the cage.

  • Thanks 4 this video. I´ll try to make that with my parrots cause they dont want touch them and dont want food if I use the fingers.

One question ¿do I have take them outside the cage to the lessons?.

    Mata ne!. See ya!.

  • Wow, this is an amazing video. This DEFFINITLEY helped me with training my budgie. Thank you so much!<3

  • How cute!

Today I'm going to start teaching my cockatiel that clicking means good things and teach it some stuff by clicking!

  • That yell was awsome!

  • what is the treat

  • what kinda treats do u give budgies other then spary millet

  • i try to get my parakeet out of the cage but he wong come out! i get him on my finger then move him closer to the door and he jumps off! check out my video of it

  • i trying to teach my african grey clicker training but it doenst want the food he drops it and doesnt wanna eat it what now can anyone help me :)

  • Enjoyed this very much!

  • Great Video - very educational and I believe every bird owner should watch this video.

  • what should I do if my parrot doesn't stay on a perch? He seems to get bored on them and climbs off them to crawl all over the floor or table. The only perch he stays on for any length of time is in his cage and he's territorial about it (lunges when you approach). Should I try and do this when he's sitting on top his cage? Although when I approach him then he tries to get off and onto my shoulder...(yes he's a biter but he seems to trust us....)

  • Michelle lives with us now and she is such a good girl. She favors women still but she is very social and curious towards men as well. Dr. Cook is amazing with birds!

  • clicky click click!

  • does anybody know if the lovebird is still a baby or an adult? i wanna train my birds like this an they're adults i think. (the bird is so cute when she bobs her head up and down)

  • lol. the lovebird is funny when she bobs her head up and down

  • OMG ive been training my brid without even knowing it!

  • lol @ halloween costumes!!

  • What does a clicker do?

  • This is FANTASTIC! Thank you so much. I had no idea, until today that Clicker training could be used for birds. And now I'm seeing it everywhere! This video was great.

  • This video gives me hope for my lovebird. Thanks so much for your time and posting it.

  • The big white bird at the beginning looks beautiful! :)

  • My cockatiel is scared of everything. Is that normal??

  • great vid!

    lol harness and hat!

thanks for uploading! i am just getting into this, and plan to adopt a gray or cockatoo; but before i do this i first want to understand those beautiful birds:)

videos like this are very helpful!

  • Hi sorry I noticed you are really good at training parrots, We have just got a baby ringneck parakeet. She is still only young, but i was wondering how i can go about hand taming her, she keeps flying away and biting. I was also wondering how we would go about getting them to talk. And sorry one other quick question how do you tell what sex your ringneck is ?

    thanks Beci

  • aaaw that was so cute!!!

definately gona try this wid my budgie

  • Thank you for your comments and questions!

Dr. Ellen K. Cook's latest DVD, "Happily Ever After with Parrots ... A Learning Game" will be released December 14, 2007. You can order it from this site:

    companionparrotmedia c o m

You can teach new behaviors to your birds, too! Behavior IS a science, and she explains this on her DVD.

    Happy Teaching!

  • What's the point of the clicker?? If I was being trained, I'd look forward to the treat, not the clicker.

  • very informative!

  • Great info! I'll have to try with Roscoe, my Amazon.

  • at 4:45 it looks like jim carry from dumb and dumber with his bird.. lmao. but lets see if this vid would help me with my brat bird

  • uh i use mouth clicking but every time they dont bite the target they are scared is there other training cuz mine dont bite the target

  • hi thank you for sharing this video it really helped me understand especially the way you showed it and i have a nesting box for my lovebirds and i cant even get close to the cage because if i do then they both run inside the nesting box so if there is any thing i can do besides removing the nesting box please help thanks!!!

  • wht if i can make the clicker sound with my mouth? is that the same? or does the clicking sound have something to do with interacting with the bird

  • you can buy a cliker on a pet store on the dog part

  • Hi, I have been watching a lot of trainning vedios that use the Clicker training - However, l like to say that l have trained my African Grey without this method - In all l have taught him to do about over 20 tricks ect., Please feel free to watch my parrot interacting and playing s game of snap!.,...

  • i need help

  • how did you earn his trust and teach him tricks without using the clicker?

  • Great video! My budgie does clicker training too. I have a picture of her on a little skateboard!

I use the book "The bird school" by Ann Castro. It is available at Amazon and comes with a clicker and a target stick.

  • Hi ronsig. You said about that bird school book? Would that help me so i can get my bird to come out of the cage, be friendly, play, and not be afraid???

  • does it apply to all parrot, especially the aggressive ones? I used to do that on my blue naped parrot but still, he act wild towards me, when i give him food, instead of taking the food he searches my finger under the food container just to bite me, and how will you react if he bites you, it didnt show how.

  • Do your best to avoid bites. Ignore the bites you might get -- never ever punish your bird.

Patience, very small steps, short time periods, and your bird likely won't bite.

Offer the treat with something other than your hand at first if he's inclined to bite.

Timing w/clicker is of the utmost importance. The moment the desired behavior is done, CLICK! Then Treat and also offer verbal praise, of course. Read your bird's body language; he can read yours! :)

  • Hi, My lovebird is extremely cage aggressive. I cant even change the water/food without her attacking me. I know I'm supposed to "ignore" the bites, but she does NOT bite lightly, she will sink her beak into my flesh and not let go.

I used to stick a sock in her cage -she would attack and latch on to it, and I could pull her out that way, BUT I feel that this would only encourage her wild behavior. How can I get her out of the cage without breaking the trust that I try to build with her?

  • H, i luv this video iv found it so helpful for me and my birds. I was wondering where u can buy a clicker? I am in australia, can u buy them here? thankyou

  • Most pet stores sell clickers, and they are usually $2.00 - $3.00 USD.

  • yea i found one in my local pet store (North Qld) im training my cockatoo! i'm pretty sure u can find them on ebay too

  • Good, a video that presents clicker training with birds. I like how it begins with fundamentals (teaching what a clicker is), then moves onto useful behaviors. I too just posted a few clicker training videos with lovebirds, please take a look.
