Child is a person under the age of 18 and a fetus is a baby within the womb. They don't necessarly mean the same thing but a fetus is still a child. It is a child at conception. And that was a whole nother body that you aborted. Think of it as if someone got stuck inside of you. If you were to because of pregnancies then you should be with your child (or as you like to call it embryo in an egg) because you had a conception and that's when it's life begins.

my cousin was actually in danger in 2008/2009 and she was able to give birth safely even though she was only 16. The world record for youngest birth mom was 5 years old and I saw a picture of her and she was very short. if a 5 year old could do it so could a 15 year old. and imaginary friends WHAT THE FUCK???????

A thought ocurred to me while watching this video. I am pro choice and agree with what you say though something has caused me some conflict. What would you think if a mother decided to just start smoking doing drugs and that sort of thing without caring how much damage they did to their child. I know that already happens and there isn't much that can be done about it. People can interfere only after its born once the damage has already been done.
@Shalek I think encouraging people to delay having children till they are willing and able to care for them will do immeasurable good in reducing child suffering and child abuse. I've known women (through my old job) who gave birth to children severely addicted to crack cocaine but thought abortion was murder. Their children will continue to suffer the physical/psychological effects for their entire lives. Not so with my dead fetus.
Another angle to this are miscarriages. There are approximately a million a year in the US, although accurate statistics are difficult to quantify, since many women never reveal that they were pregnant and miscarried. My daughter did, and no doctor or government bureau ever learned of it.

How in the world did anyone ever get the notion that a microscopic fertilized egg is the full moral equivalent of a living breathing child? On the other hand, I'm not in favor of abortions in the final trimester. Where do we draw the line morally for abortion unrelated to medical issues? I think the logical place would be when the brain starts generating regular, measurable brain waves, which doesn't happen until after 20 weeks of gestation. It is the mind that makes us human.
@DandAinTac FYI, abortions in the 3rd trimester are illegal in the US with the exception of fetal inviability or maternal mortality risk. Roe v Wade was a compromise, with different access to abortion at different stages of pregnancy.
While brain waves may begin midway through a pregnancy, a fetus has no "mind" (no consciousness) till birth, from the evidence we have thus far. (Fetuses are kept continuously asleep by hormones in the womb.)

Life is an unbroken chain--going back to the first living cell. Conception is an arbitrary demarcation--drawn at that point for strictly religious/political reasons. We recognize in our society that a person is no longer alive when their brain stops functioning. This is a sensible place to draw the line for when a new person is alive.

Physiologically a blastocyst shares more qualities with a tumor than a human. That is because it has no human qualities except a unique human genetic structure. Gametes also have unique genetic structures, and are not human.

In order identify ANY human rights issue we have to know what a human is. And yes, assuming abortion is a human rights violation is begging the question - a case has to be made for that.
All mammals blastocyst also have the exact qualities of a human's except in DNA, actually all mammals are nearly identical in the womb up to a point.
My definition of a human is this a viable life form with brain function. Truly, the one thing that defines a man from any other mammal is cognitive thought.
If DNA is the only difference then it must be quite a crucial difference because horse, dog and cat blastocysts never become human adults.
Viability changes with technology but it doesn't make sense that a technological advance suddenly transforms thousands of unborn "things" into humans. And how is the cognitive thought of a newborn infant more advanced than an adult dog or monkey?

@Sukov I didn't say I approved of killing newborns. I need to clarify myself: Humanity is most clearly defined by thought. Without a functioning brain, thought is impossible. A functioning brain is a later development in pregnancy. Therefore for a fair bit in pregnancy, the fetus is not human.

Child is a person under the age of 18 and a fetus is a baby within the womb. They don't necessarly mean the same thing but a fetus is still a child. It is a child at conception. And that was a whole nother body that you aborted. Think of it as if someone got stuck inside of you. If you were to because of pregnancies then you should be with your child (or as you like to call it embryo in an egg) because you had a conception and that's when it's life begins.

my cousin was actually in danger in 2008/2009 and she was able to give birth safely even though she was only 16. I ADORE my son & would do anything to be his mother, including terminating a later pregnancy that threatened to take me away from my son.

A thought ocurred to me while watching this video. I am pro choice and agree with what you say though something has caused me some conflict. What would you think if a mother decided to just start smoking doing drugs and that sort of thing without caring how much damage they did to their child. I know that already happens and there isn't much that can be done about it. People can interfere only after its born once the damage has already been done.

@Shalek I think encouraging people to delay having children till they are willing and able to care for them will do immeasurable good in reducing child suffering and child abuse. I've known women (through my old job) who gave birth to children severely addicted to crack cocaine but thought abortion was murder. Their children will continue to suffer the physical/psychological effects for their entire lives. Not so with my dead fetus.

Another angle to this are miscarriages. There are approximately a million a year in the US, although accurate statistics are difficult to quantify, since many women never reveal that they were pregnant and miscarried. My daughter did, and no doctor or government bureau ever learned of it.
If God were real, and if God finds abortion so morally repugnant, why does he do so much of it?

How in the world did anyone ever get the notion that a microscopic fertilized egg is the full moral equivalent of a living breathing child? On the other hand, I'm not in favor of abortions in the final trimester. Where do we draw the line morally for abortion unrelated to medical issues? I think the logical place would be when the brain starts generating regular, measurable brain waves, which doesn't happen until after 20 weeks of gestation. It is the mind that makes us human.

@DandAinTac FYI, abortions in the 3rd trimester are illegal in the US with the exception of fetal inviability or maternal mortality risk. Roe v Wade was a compromise, with different access to abortion at different stages of pregnancy.
While brain waves may begin midway through a pregnancy, a fetus has no "mind" (no consciousness) till birth, from the evidence we have thus far. (Fetuses are kept continuously asleep by hormones in the womb.)

@AngieAntiTheist Hmmm--I knew about the first part, but not the second part. My thinking on this is influenced by a thoughtful essay written by Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan--check it out sometime. I hate the judgmental, insulting, holier-than-thou attitude from so many. I find that those who think they are soooo right, tend to be so wrong, and are actually pitching rocks at glass houses. You have a lot of guts to be so open on such an intimate and personal issue and subject yourself to this.

@AngieAntiTheist The point was that brain waves mean that there is a mind there. Wheather or not that mind is aware of itself or conscious should be irrelevant. Otherwise it'd be okay to kill anyone so long as they're asleep wouldn't it?

@aaronmyers1982 Ah but see, you've betrayed your ignorance of the definition of the word "mind". The presence of a brain does not automatically indicate the presence of a mind. The mind is what the brain does (other than regulating body) but only with awareness/consciousness (which both happen after BIRTH.)

@AngieAntiTheist On the otherhand though, if indeed there is a consciousness, awareness, or mind, we can always go into the symantics of it, like for example, has the mind and nervous system exceeded the complexity of a pigs, cows, or rodents? Nobody complains when you kill one of those out of convienience or to feed yourself for a week but they'll complain if you kill a fetus that hasn't reached as sophisticated level of conciousness to keep from inconvieniencing yourself for 18 years.

@Sukov While I don't think intelligence alone is a measure of our humanity (then we could say mentally retarded individuals are subhuman--wrongwrongwrong), I do believe that a functioning, thinking human mind is what makes us human--not whether or not our heart is beating. I agree with Angie that the existing law is a reasonable compromise.

@DandAinTac But if a dog can perform more advanced personal functions than a newborn infant then why should we value the infant more? Is it not that we know it is a human and that humans are more advanced persons than dogs by nature even if they haven't fully achieved that functionality yet or in some cases never will?

@DandAinTac By "developmental limitations" I mean that an infant has limited abilities due to not yet being fully developed. Yet we treat infants (I believe rightly so) as being 100% as valuable as fully developed adults. So the question becomes, why suddenly start factoring in development when judging the value of a human in the womb? Why not have consistent reasoning across the board?

@Sukov What you are trying to do is say that a zygote, a newly fertilized egg, merely is just not fully developed--that's all. I say a zygote is not yet alive. Life is an unbroken chain--going back to the first living cell. Conception is an arbitrary demarcation--drawn at that point for strictly religious/political reasons. We recognize in our society that a person is no longer alive when their brain stops functioning. This is a sensible place to draw the line for when a new person is alive.

@Sukov ...to continue. A zygote is potential life, sure, but so is every egg and sperm cell. They are also limited developmentally are they not? When a person suffers brain death--like Terry Schiavo or Republican Tom Delay's father, there is a broad consensus in our society that their life is over. It is a mind that is what makes us human, and this is a sound scientific and logical place for legal protection to begin, when the human mind starts up. This happens to be during the 2nd trimester.

@DandAinTac Yes, life is a chain but chains have links - clearly my parents and I are separate humans. It is not arbitrary to identify fertilization as where a new link begins. What better biological marker has science shown us? It is clearly not when brain waves start. That is merely developmental and does not mark the creation of a new organism. Yes, once the brain is developed, it's death ends life. But an embryo's lack of a brain does not end it's life - the situations are different.

@DandAinTac You're free to believe a new organism starts at birth, puberty or anywhere else but it doesn't change the facts of science. During fertilization parental genetic material combine resulting in a new organism with it's own DNA separate from each parent. All humans are dependent - you cannot live in space without artificial support. A human embryo is personal by nature. An infant can have a considerably undeveloped mind yet we respect it's nature not it's temporary limitation.

Until all of the antiabortion people in the world adopt at least 10 kids without parents they should keep their mouths shut.They pressure women(often poor teenage girls)for 9 months in which they are pregnant,making them feel that if they think at all about themselves and their futures they are as evil as Hitler.Then,as soon as the fetus is actually born and the mother looks for abit of help so her child doesn't grow up in dire poverty,she and her baby become "welfare leeches"and are demonized.

Physiologically a blastocyst shares more qualities with a tumor than a human. That is because it has no human qualities except a unique human genetic structure. Gametes also have unique genetic structures, and are not human.

In order identify ANY human rights issue we have to know what a human is. And yes, assuming abortion is a human rights violation is begging the question - a case has to be made for that.

My definition of a human is this a viable life form with brain function. Truly, the one thing that defines a man from any other mammal is cognitive thought.

If DNA is the only difference then it must be quite a crucial difference because horse, dog and cat blastocysts never become human adults.
Viability changes with technology but it doesn't make sense that a technological advance suddenly transforms thousands of unborn "things" into humans. And how is the cognitive thought of a newborn infant more advanced than an adult dog or monkey?

@Sukov I didn't say I approved of killing newborns. I need to clarify myself: Humanity is most clearly defined by thought. Without a functioning brain, thought is impossible. A functioning brain is a later development in pregnancy. Therefore for a fair bit in pregnancy, the fetus is not human.
Human value is... well... there are billions of humans. Human value is inflated. My perception of human value is more societal than lack of common sense.
