Love this song, bought a load of singles from a local charity shop for 20p each about 10 years ago, they included Down In The Park, I Die You Die, We Are Glass, She's Got Claws, Warriors, Complex, Music for Chameleons, White Boys and Heroes, Love Needs No Disguise, We Take Mystery (To Bed), London Times and Radio Heart (with Radio Heart), Change Your Mind, No More Lies and I'm on Automatic (with Bill Sharpe), this one and Venus In Furs (Paul Gardiner), still play them now.
I have the St. Etienne cover and have never heard the original until now. Can anyone tell me what this song means? I looked up the lyrics and can only guess it has something to do with drug addiction.
@djmixnmagic ... Yep you are quite my friend it was about drugs, Paul Gardiner who wrote the song was Gary Numans bass player during the early years and this song turned out to be prophetic in that he died from a drug overdose not long after this song was recorded. Very sad really...
This song was done around "Dance" Lp. Did 2 songs with Paul this was only as a single the other,Night Talk was on the Dance album 2 really great trax. I always thought this should've made it on Dance too.Shame Mr Gardener had a sad demise fuelled by heroin and was apparently found on a park bench after an overdose. Original member of T/Army & Numan's best friend.
Stormtrooper was on a few greatest hits cd's! It's deep and dark ...perfect!
this was written by the late Paul Gardiner, recorded around the time of Dance, Gary did the vox as a favour, it was released as a 45 7" (which I have on vinyl) RIP Paul, a great and intersting bassist.
sorry to pester you mate but if you could bring yourself to part with something you dont even see and its not much to look at i could give you $10000 for it, i certainly couldnt get any more but hope you think its a lot of money. it would complete my collection and make a numan fan very happy. hope to hear from you pal,
It is NOT from Dance - 1981. It is one of the extra tracks on the CD reissue because it was recorded around the same time. It was not on the original release.
beatiful song...this song is featured by gary numan but was created by Numan bass player Paul Gardiner this is the list of instruments Producers: Gary Numan Musicians: Paul Gardiner: Guitar, Keyboards (ARP Odyssey), Backing vocals Gary Numan: Vocals, Keyboards (ARP Odyssey), Bass, Guitar, Linn LM-1 ("Night Talk") John Webb: Drums ("Stormtrooper in Drag") Sean Lynch: Linn LM-1 ("Night Talk") By wikipedia Thanks for posting this lovely music
Numan did in fact co-write this track with Paul Gardiner. He also produced the track and played keyboards & guitars. Although it really should be credited to Gardiner it has recently more than often been mis-credited to Numan. Having said that, I much prefer the Saint Etienne version.
This right here is tied for my number one favorite song of all time with The Clash - Lost In The Supermarket. I can't decide between them. :)

LOL when I first saw this video recommended as 'Stormtrooper in drag', I thought it was someone describing Gary Numan xD

Yes what a waste of talent me thinks. I was lucky to meet Mr Gardiner Tubeway Army and Gary Numan in 1980. He was a gent.
