I am not a fan of Mel either, but for the love of God, when the man you love and *just* married runs of with another woman he has been in love with for 7 years, you deserve a pit of sympathy and it's okay to be a bitch! If I had been Mel, I would have bitch-slapped Niles and Daphne to Antarctica. Do I feel sorry for Mel? Absolutely. Do I like her? No. Then again, I haven't been a fan of any female characters on this show, except for Lilith and a few of Frasier's potential girlfriends.
Why do none of Daphne's brothers have Manchester accents? And why is she referred to as 'Cockney'? She's from Manchester, not London. I can only assume that this is intentional, as Jane Leeves is from Ilford - only just outside East London and so surely she would be a good source of info for the writers on these things. This show is pure gold and I don't suppose it would matter if Daphne's brothers had spanish accents - it wouldn't take away from the brilliance that is this show!
If I remember correctly, at this point Daphne hasn't gotten her green card yet, therefore she was not allowed to leave the U.S, which means escaping to Canada would be a really bad idea for her and Niles. In the first season Daphne freaked out when Martin (or Frasier?) impulsively drove her to Canada. I know I shouldn't be serious about this but I am surprised they made Daphne sounds like she wants to go to Canada.
I hate what he did to mel. Shes such a sincere person. Daphne is okay but Mel's an elitist who is exactly like niles in almost every way and he just ditched her. Once more, nothing is wrong with daphne exactly but she isn't even in the same caste as Mel.
@PuppetMask It doesn't matter how much class Daphne may or may not have compared to Mel. What matters is that Niles felt a strong attraction to Daphne for many years and he loves her for WHO she is, not WHAT she is. With Mel, he loved the fact that she was exactly like him, but that love would probably have faded over time, thus leading him back to his feelings for Daphne.
@PuppetMask I don't, Mel was a manipulative bitch and anything but sincere. She had Niles wrapped round her little finger. Basicly she was Maris all over again! Niles didn't realise how spiteful she could be until after he left her and when he did he finally saw her the way everyone else did. Nobody else was sorry to see Niles leave Mel and with good reason.
"Never! Returning used merchandise is unethical, and I for one will never be party to it!" Simon's pomposity right there is just amazing. "Call me crazy, but I think what we really need is a nice pot of fondue right now." What a great outlook on life.
@zupanicka are you kidding? she was wretched. by seeing Niles dote on her, we got to see what his early courtship with Maris was like. she was every bit as shrill and controlling, and was vindictive and spiteful after the fact. and when did Niles cheat on Mel?
@ardrighsailor no im not kidding...but my english is too poor so I cant explain my opinion...Maris was evil and Mel was just controlling...but she loved him I think....so I dont want to compare these two women...but...he dated Mel...he got married with her and then he kissed Daphne and ran away (?) with her...is it ok? Im not saying that Mel was perfect or something...but I dont understand why do people hate her so much..
@zupanicka Yes, what NIles and Daphne did was, to an extent, awful, but the very fact so many people hate her on these channels should be proof to what a horrid, uptight, stuck-up, nasty woman Mel is. At least MARIS was never seen at all.
@TorontoLibertarian Because that's the main worry of Canadians, illegal immigrants. Living next to 3rd world undeveloped countries with a constant invasion of people who don't speak any relevant language in here- Oh wait, that's the complete opposite! Calm down.
i hate that mel bitch, another friggin maris..grrr. wtf..they should of then hook up cause that donnie dude is a idiot for daph...daph would of left him at the alter which she did or 3 days later
@TorontoLibertarian dafney can, the english queen is also tied to canada and the two countries welcome each other, its only in america that she is an alein. and niles yes, he would be in canada
I LOVE the scene from 36:06 to 38:00 when Martin is ignoring Frasier and talking about food; I love the way the writers always manage to write the characters in a way that lets you know their personalities exactly even if you've never seen it before. Hilariously written and acted. LOVE this show.
i know it's a TV show but if someone is having a panic attack and trouble breathing you NEVER bend them over like Frasier did to Niles, all that does is put pressure on the Diaphragm and make it harder to breathe
Frasier is such an absolute doll in this episode. Sure, he may have interfered (like he always does) but only because he loved Niles and Daphne, and wanted them to be happy. And in the end, it all worked out. As pompous and egotistical as he is, he really has a heart of gold.
The fact that you're debating about a charachter means that A) It's good writing by the writers. or B) She is a very good actress. or C) BOTH! I hate the guts out of Mel. But I don't talk about them as if they're real...
I don't think Frasier ever really 'jumped the shark'. It was witty and enjoying even on season 11. But if there was an event within the plot that did lead it to somewhat decrease in quality, I think it was Niles and Daphne getting together.

@mjac4ever Its two different shows. Just like in real life not every relationship progress in the exact same way. The writers just wrote however they see fit, I dont think it's intentional either way.
It's too bad that this was a sitcom with censors to please, because I would gladly have watched Simon get straight-up punched in the face once in a while.
i'm not a fan of daphne's family. the episodes featuring simon and the ones featuring her parents later on are probably my least favourite. maybe it's because there are so many people like that in real life...opportunistic users. ugh.
I wish she hadn't gotten herself knocked up. It ruins the illusion. Plus they try to pretend that her weight gain is because she can't handle the pressure of living up to Niles' adoration. What load of crap is that? It taints the whole sweet romance.
@TheBookVlogger I actually disagree, she got pregnant, that's her private life, her business. Whatever impact it has on the show can be dealt with, and the writers did so masterfully. And yes, living up to someone else's expectations can lead to things like overeating and other ways to deal with the stress. It's been documented, though not too frequently. Still, if people are willing to kill over their lovers then I can easily buy that someone will overeat due to stress.
@dtometallica 100% agreed. I love that they didn't rush this relationship with the usual-we-broke-everyone's-heart-but-everything-is-perfectly-wonderful-cause-this-is-tv-romance. Jane's pregnancy (i.e. Daphne's "weight") actually helped in that respect, because it ends up forcing Niles to face the fact that he's been in love with a fantasy version of Daphne all along. I personally KNOW that this is a true-to-life version of what can happen and the writers handled it wonderfully.
@MekkaSG Yeah I feel ppl give Mel a rough time because she's irritating and pretentious plus she "stole" Niles. But she really didn't "deserve" to get dumped the way she did. And you're right... she did care for Niles.
My uncle had this sort of thing happen to him, but she broke it off a week before. It is a devastating experience & would be very tough to forgive and understand. Hell even Frasier in this show had Diane leave him at the alter. You have to do what you have to do, but expecting understanding and forgiveness at the other end is wishful thinking. It usually doesn't happen. Anyway, I loved Donnie, great character and sucks they favored Niles, but I understand the show.
There is no blessing on a marriage, when you sucker-punched nice people in order to be together. In 'real life', this scenario would NOT have ended well. Karma will get you ----
@alternatehistorian Niles was a spineless loser. Mel was irritating but at the end of the day Mel only became vindictive because Niles broke her heart.
Why was the show so anti-british? I think every british actor in it played a drunken lout... I love the show but they showed dapney as not very bright, simaon an all the other brothers as drunks, dap's dad as a drunk her mom as a cold hearted annoying an occasional drunk, an remember the show with dap's pub where frasier starts going there? They got frasier callin the Queen an old hag an slaggin off british food an culter... Almost petty really...Anywho the sow was brill none the less.
@EnglishHighsociety to be fair we brits slag off the americans culture too. come to think of it we slag off most cultures including our own in our tv shows (look up frankie boyle and you'll see what I mean). besides all the characters in this are flawed. frasier and niles are both snobbish and elitist, daphne's ditsy and a bit thick at times and martin's stubborn and a bit old fashioned. No-ones perfect
@SteinaIcelander Dont be petty, its just silly really... My spelling was good enough for a youtube comment! I promise my interest in grammer & spelling is better when it actually matters.. "Feel better?"
whenever there is a bride running away in any movie or tv serie, they always keep their dress on... I would, at the very very least take off the veil!!!
Man I really hated Mel here, I understand her being pissed about Niles leaving her after 3 days of marriage but to stoop to calling Daphne names is ridiculous. I mean "maid whore" and "cockney tart"? Niles was right to call Mel on calling Daphne a housekeeper. She wasn't a housekeeper, she was a physical therapist and she certainly wasn't a whore or a tart.
That made me mad.
Can you blame Niles for falling in love with Daphne? I certainly can't and I'm a girl. Mel got what she deserved.
@ddjmfan No Mel does not "deserve" being dumped like that, that's the most ridiculous thing ever. And I'm a guy btw. If Niles didn't like her he should have grown a spine and not gone out with her in the 1st place. Of course she's going to be angry at Daphne, and calling her a "whore" was one of the tamest things ever. Technically Daphne did "steal" her husband - Mel was hardly likely to be overjoyed. And Daphne became an annoying bitch in later seasons. Mel DID care for Niles.
Oh and I must add that she (and the costumers) did a great job hiding her pregnancy. Of course by episode 7, it was mor difficult to hide it. Still, she was great and this show wouldn't have been the same without Jane. :)
Its so funny, you can tell that the first 06:36 was filmed as a part of "Something Borrowed, Someone Blue" as Jane Leeves looks so much thinner in the face. Of course after that she had already been pregnant for about (not sure about this however) 2-4 months when filming of this episode started..you can see her face was a little bit chunkier. All in all, I love every episode of this show, all 264 episodes. If any one actor was never cast or was replaced, it wouldn't have worked. I dont think so.
@riderontheweb Yeah Frasier was awesome in this episode. Normally he's such a pompous jackass but he really rose above it in this episode and redeemed himself. He selflessly put his brother's happiness above his own gigantic ego - no mean feat for such a man.
It's so funny to think about Niles immediately calling her Manchester accent when they first met, all the way to him jokingly asking her where she's from during the dance here. Epic.

You can already tell Jane Leeves is pregnant here. They try to hide it with that shirt but they can't quite do it...

whenever there is a bride running away in any movie or tv serie, they always keep their dress on...

Brilliant scriptwriting. Didn't see Fraiser getting sued or Niles and Mel pretending they're married...unless you read this first.

I'm the biggest Niles fan but Frasier just wins the whole damned series with how much of a prince he is in this episode.

Epic.
