  • david didn't write this song by the way great cover though

  • nice top comment, grandads are great arent they

  • I just saw an ol' Psych episode with this song. It was a serious moment, and those don't happen too often in the show. They made sure not to mess it up by playing this lovely remake.

  • cop out

  • I agree with shaney0100 both songs are very good takes me back to the 80s .

  • I think both versions are class

  • @TheOmnibot i very much disagree. this song is amazing, who are you to say he is copying someone else? i'm sure he wants his music to touch people, and it does.

  • @TheOmnibot There would be no Mr Tambourine Man without the Byrds and this song is pop crap without David Grey's genius interpretation. The Soft Cell version is casual and street slick ear dross, make up sliding down. The writers deserve their credit but the implementation is not their keen but the interpreters. And the large wave of passing emotion is captured here and not in glitzy insipid Euro speak.

  • The Soft Cell version of this song is one of my favourite all time tracks, with lots of memories. So why do I also like the David Gray version?

Simply because, as an amateur musician, it had never occurred to me that this song could be covered on the acoustic guitar, and having heard this version, I can add this to my repetoire, and enjoy playing this song myself.

I would far rather hear something like this - a completely new arrangement - than someone's note-for-note cover.

  • @Filklore David Grey is to this song as Vanilla Fudge is to "Keep Me Hanging On" - the essence of this song is lost in London pop crap and David makes it folk anthem to hearts wrenched in the world of birth and death. Soft Cell thanks but David makes it art.

  • Quite the David Gray bashing going on here. Usually, the lovers of the arts are so open to interpretation, yet so much venom from some of the musical 'experts'. All I have to say is five people with an imagination and a vision see a straight line differently.

  • Reminds me of the best weekend away I ever had..never appreciated it at the time...Hindsight. wonderful thing

  • rip matt cook

    - misc

  • marc almond is way way better..he has a beautiful haunting voice...sorry but david gray just doesnt do it for me..

  • As for me, I will find someone who is not going cheap in the sales

  • love this version, but marc almond live just hits it perfectly. grown man in tears is not a pretty sight..lol

  • love this song just because it is on for so long, this is my bed time song =p

  • THIS makes me feel like I'm in a Zooey Deschanel movie. Sorry, film.

  • @ Durgesuth if you are talking about Soft Cell I disagree-it is like eating mayonnaise with a spoon listening to them. Gray actually has texture and substance.

  • @rallennehring never yet known a cover better than the original

  • @TheDouglas1964 De gustibus non est disputandum.

  • @TheDouglas1964 listen to ryan adams wonderwall thats another good cover....

  • @rallennehring To each their own.

  • He really murdered this song...not a patch on the original

  • For the loved & the lost :(

  • your awesome david grey, a great musician

  • She came into my life after 28 years away only to die suddenly in an accident 6 months later...say hello say good bye

  • keep ur ex bird at arms lent, and wave good bye ,dat is if she is even good anuff, which most dont even deserv it,u know ho u are lady m,w not her real name her name is big hot lips ha haaaaaaaaaaaaa wes,g

  • GREAT SONG

  • I say one thing... she means another

  • no offence, but the beatles, clapton, costillo only dreamt of these song writin skills

  • @MrWeerobb David gray is soooperb... unfortunately he didn,y write this one

  • im glad people appreciate good music like this

  • 47 people are sad

  • this version totaly misses the original meaning, and messes it up so much it has no meaning. Honestly it shows that he has no idea od what the song was about.

  • Chris, it's hard but have moved on and seeing someone else, but not easy.....have my ticket to see David Gray July 9th in Kansas City......'it's not the music but the lyrics"

  • great song

  • Love the song, just got out of a "so so love", we had nothing in common but i loved her anyway........DAVID GRAY can hit you right in the heart

  • @dsf9999 well in that case say hello and wave goodbye to her my friend

  • why is there not a video for this song? it rocks !!!!

  • im the same as a few of you, this reminds me of a girl i met many years ago and it was a whirlwind romance, i loved her very much, but had to let her go as know that it wasnt going to last due to lies, but still think about her and what she's up to

  • @pastyhead80 id say she is taking black cock in her asshole

  • @ChrisMcloviification you seen the porno she was in then?!!

  • this song reminds me of a girl that I met. I liked her and I let go of her. Now every time I see her I'm reminded that I could have had her in my life. now when we see each other all that remains between us are silent stares of a memory that is slowly fading awy.

  • you can`t better an original , but this just as good in its own right.

  • This song brings back so many memorys! ..to when i was younger, and i spent all the summer days with my granddad. We did so much together, he was my bestfriend:( Then i was 11, he died, i was so hurt. I'm now 15, and still missing him so much! I love you now and forever and ever granddad!:'( xxxx

  • @Rachel64129 ARRHH HOPE U OK, WHAT U HAVE WROTE MADE ME CRY, LISTENING TO THIS SONG. IT DOES GET EASIER, THINK OF ALL THE LOVELY MEMORIES U HAVE WITH YOUR GRANDAD X

  • @berno125 Thankyou.. you would have thought in all this time since he's died, i would have stopped hurting so much, yet i still miss him so much. i suppose in life you always get what you want: i wished my granddad could still be with me <3<3

  • @Rachel64129 Tomorrow would of been my Grandpas 100th Birthday, I still miss him.

  • @mysdyrekted4life

*huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugs* he knows and he loves you sweetie

    :)

  • @Rachel64129 ......bless..ya!!!!!!!

  • @Rachel64129 sorry to hear that, i split up with a girlfriend at the time this came out, altho its not on par with the the loss of your grandad it was still a painfull time,i hope you feel better, time is a healer, i now do a great DAVID GRAY on karaokee xxxxx

  • @Rachel64129 you sweetheart

  • @Rachel64129 That makes me wonder about the relationship you had with your grandfather, since this is clearly about a romantic entanglement...

  • @Rachel64129 Also, he refers to it as "a kind of so-so love"

  • reminds me of a girl i once knew and loved but sadly not enough

  • Beautiful

  • love his voice

  • i listened to this on the way to my dads funeral and it always makes me think of him.. bittersweet and beautiful <3

  • His BEST song, though it's a cover. Perfection.

  • Amazing song!! David Gray is amazing and even better in concert. Love him!!

  • Just reading these comments - it's good to know it means the same to others as it did to me.

  • Some of these comments are really annoying me. I am a Soft Cell fan- a huge fan. But I still love this. It is possible to like a cover of a song you love.

Dave Ball (synth-player in Soft Cell, and the man who wrote the music to Say Hello, Wave Goodbye) has said many times that both he and Marc adore this cover of their song, and it the song a new dimension. David gray knew this was a great song, and has done it justice. I thank him for reimagining a favourite of mine beautifully.

  • Saw him do this live in Pittsburgh in April of '01 with someone very special, and that show was part of the best spring and summer of my life... sadly, so much changed that September. 'Say Hello and Wave Goodbye' will always pull at my heart in bittersweet ways.

  • What a great song!

  • I love this song... david gray done a brilliant cover

  • Love ths, sounds so different from the Marc Almond version, I didnt realse it was the same song

  • wow i haven't heard this song for over 5 years it brings back good memories when i had a great life and a way tidy burd. But alcohol has put time to that.Any young troops out there its no worth it,it me seem good at the time but as easy as it comes easy go etc etc

  • wow i haven't heard this song for over 5 years it brings back good memories when i had a great life and a way tidy burd. But alcohol has put time to that.

  • I love this version and would agree with others that this is a very emotive song.....

    Well done Mr.Gray.

  • finally i actually see people's comments where everyone isn't cursing at everyone

  • We fall in love with an illusion. But the pain is just as bad as if we lose the real thing. sharon in colorado

  • this was one of my brothers favourite songs.Unfortunately he is no longer with me ,but i have memories

  • I like a lot of David Gray's stuff but this is tuneless drivel.A very disappointing cover!

  • @ECCENTRICERIC69 BOOOOOOOOO!

  • Love this song, reminds me of happy times, travelling in Oz and Thailand!!

  • just in middle of seperation from my wife n it just hits homes so much SHARON I'm so sorry!!!!

  • This was played at my nana's funeral, makes me cry everytime i listen to it

  • i cant help but cry when i hear this

  • what a fantastic song, saw marc almond perform it and i cried like a baby

  • I never knew you, you never knew me, say hello, goodbye.........

  • I love this, and the original by Soft Cell

Completely different vibe from each other

  • I love this song.. so beautiful and yet so sad.....It is in my top 10

  • the world still has real stars that shine thank you god for showing me the light through davids work truly wonderous amazing and humbling

  • favorite male artist of all times love him xxx

  • Today, this became my girlfriend and my song :)

  • I've heard both versions I don't mean to insult anyone, we all have our own tastes & opinions & I'm gonna give you mine. This song is sooooo precious to me. It's done in a peaceful sad folk music kind of way. As a matter of fact, the first time I heard this song was on an episode of Without A Trace & I was so hooked that I've spent nearly 4 years trying to find out who was singing this. Yeah, I know, I'm slow, lol. Soft Cells version is ok too. But, yeah, I prefer this folky style.

  • this is the most beautiful male voice out there this man is incredible love he's voice really amazing!! all of he's songs are so seductive

  • this is the most beautiful male voice out there this man is incredible love hes voice really amazing all of hes songs

  • Clearly 41 people need glasses because pressed the dislike button by mistake.

  • This is a sacrilege of the spirit of the 80's! What the hell is doing this abominable guitar man singing this hymn of the 80's; Marc Almond should have been extremely drunk for leaving this man destroying his song this way. Only a question for all of you who like so much this tedious cover; what is Gray doing in the Pink Flamingo?

  • @BlackSkyThunder 80s were shit mate!!

  • @frenchy99555 80s were the best shit, are you sure you dislike everything that happened in the 80s? Do you like this song? Then you must know that this song was a hymn of the new romantic from Soft Cell. In my opinion, the only shit is this awful cover;

  • @BlackSkyThunder if you think about it all the songs now days are remakes of the older songs all the way back to the 70's but he does have a nice voice

  • @kathybear5326 the voice, the voice, and what about the spirit? Marc Almond when he sang this song he put the whole of himself in it in a period (early 80's) I dislike David Gray's

intonation for this song; in reality it makes no sense. Of course, he can sing whatever he likes and I am happy if he likes this hymn of the 80's but the recognition & the spirit belong to Soft Cell & the new romantic movement!!!!!

  • @BlackSkyThunder Agree with each and every word you have said !

  • Music Doesn't Lie. If There Is Something To Be Changed In This World, Then It Can Only Happen Through Music...(Clever Musisian,,,.

  • Sublime......

  • I writet this songe

    everthing went buter than expecshions

    regards, uncle dolan

  • I'm a 70 year old music lover who just discovered David Gray. I think he's terrific - love his music. Wonder who arranges it?

  • @leebeau2 Don't forget this was originally a Soft Cell / Marc Almond song.

He's covered it well though. I love his voice.

  • @hybridkettnergirl loved the version Marc Almond did of this song on the Jools Holland album 10 years back

  • J'adore et je trouve de belles intonations de Bob Dylan, les grands sont toujours des exemples !

  • This one goes out to Tim Green and my <3

  • I just saw an episode of Without a Trace and they played this song at the end. Never even heard it before till now but its such a fantasic song and fits right in with how im feeling. Absolutely love it! I found another talented artist with very similar music on here the same way and his name is chad doucette. If you like this you may like his music too. Once again, this song is great!!!

  • does anyone know these kin of songs, imean songs with this tuning, slowly etc. from the '70s

  • RIP DAD x

  • rip Matt :/

  • This is one of the rarest things in the music industry - a genuinely brilliant cover song. Takes talent to take a song and do it justice. 99% of the music industry should take note.

  • there isnt a single cut he's made that doesnt make me pay attention. He's amazing. Ive never been the groupie kind, but this comes very close to that, lol.

In the five years Ive known of him Ive never tired of listening.

  • One of the greatest singers this country has ever produced along with stereophonics and oasis

  • Very few songs move me the way this does. The emotion in his voice is mindblowing. I can't get over it.

  • i loved this track when it was released by soft cell back in 198 *coughs..an i reckon is better by david gray

  • yeah i hear the different meaning just got my ring returned today after almost 5 years

  • my teacher in speech class is an amazing guitar player, and he played this and sung it to the class.. i love this song now. And gained new respect for my teacher haha

  • my wife and i started listening to this when we met 10 yrs ago and now we are seperating i am bringing it back, but it definatly has a diffrent meaning to me now.

  • That's rough brother. But his songs seem to always hit a chord in me as well. The man has a gift.

  • @sedmano

    yep

    'true dat'

  • @sedmano one can only imagine......in fact, it probably has the reverse meaning for you......

  • @sedmano Very sorry to hear that friend...It reminds me of my husband from 10 yrs ago, how ironic!!!! It also has a different meaning to me!!!! Keep on keeping on......I've learned from that experience anyways.......Still single, hard for me to trust now!!!! We will try to love again n time!!!!

  • @sedmano My girlfriend made me listen to this as we're in an arguement. She said i should listen to the lyrics and make meaning of them.

  • @sedmano

music - the soundtrack to our life. Wish you well. x

  • @sedmano 22YEARS LATER FEEL LIKE WAVING

  • @sedmano 22YEARS LATER FEEL LIKE WAVING MEN ARE NOT IN TUNE

  • @sedmano I"m going through separation as well..its a perfect song

  • @sedmano I'm so sorry for the pain you feel in the letting go. But to listen to this and it's meaning is clear. You shared moments that fill your soul. Precious and beautiful and just know that love although it ends, it never dies and more beautiful than that, she prepared you to have an even more powerful love! <3 to you my dear:-)

  • @sedmano i am sorry to read what you said listening to this song , hang in there , i hope youre both still ok

  • This version is ok according to individual tastes

& opinions. I don't consider it to be anything near as good as the original version by Soft Cell. I'm not saying it's bad though, far from it, just does not have the same sound or nostalgia attached to it, as the Marc Almond version. The sound of the syth in his version (Almond) is quite haunting with more than an element of emotion... amazing stuff!. The guitar in it's place fails to make it appealing in my way of thinking.

  • love thwewwwmain but this is stunning great job davidf

  • you and i it had to be the standing joke of the year ...

  • Lots of effort with the video - tee hee

  • Strange how you can listen to a song for years and not realise just how incredible it is until it hits you at random out of nowhere and you finally get it. That's what happened to me today. I always thought this was a nice song but nothing amazing but now I just can't get over it. It just really says what's on my mind right now.

  • @stratmad you man are right! thank you Wrexham F.C. thank you David Gray!

" say hello amd waaawe goodbyyye..."

  • @stratmad I just did exactly this.

  • @stratmad - David Gray's music does that to me every time I play one of his discs. Funny how music written and sung from the heart works.

  • @stratmad

I found this cd in my room one day, dont know where it came from, but i found it about one month after my wife divorced me for my friend. I know what you mean.

  • I will never get tired of this song. Souch heartfelt and honest lyrics.

  • so much better played then soft cell

  • Masterpiece. I don't like at all Soft Cell version, no emotions at all, but David Gray makes it far better

  • this is my tune right now

  • It rare for a cover version to meet with the original.....

    .......and this does

  • class class song.... memories!

  • rip matt

  • david gray at his best

  • love this guy hes awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
