His owner stopped him pretty quickly but at only nine weeks old Legacy (my dog) was pretty vunerable. I didn't notice the great dane because a Lab mix was barking at us. Had I seen the dog attacking I wouldve picked Legacy up and protected him. The Great Dane only got his ears but there was a lot of blood. Luckily I live down the street from the vet. He's fine now
ive got a pit 16 weeks, i beleive the vet cut them the short cut, hes had 2 tapings but they curl in toward his head, they didnt use any post in the ears just tape , whichhe would tear off after 2 days, but do you have any suggestions? do they need post in the ear? they were cut pretty short, kinda worried!

@SantaValium Battle Crop was originally used in dog fights to prevent the other dog from getting a hold of the dogs ear. They probably still fight pits but not as much. I really hate the battle crop. at least the long crop or the show crop because they are not as short.

I understand a Rottie's tail simply cause they will probably break their tail from hitting things..I guess with boxers, dobie's or pitbulls its tradition...My Ptibull ears are normal and not cropped simply cause its more healthier to not crop...too many ear infections when its open like that and besides...The pitbulls head is big enough where the full ears are small...To each's own, as long as its done by a professional at early age

Cropping in my mind is like when a person gets a piecing it doesn't hurt to have done and the after care if the tricky part. Like others say before when you fix a dog it is basically the same thing. I have never met a great dane, Doberman, or pitbull that has had a traumatic experience from the cropping. It is the owners choice to make and as long as the dog is properly taken care of there should be no issue.

Thanks for the informative video. I've chosen not to crop my pup's ears, the breed has a really bad rap and they tend to look "meaner" with the cropped ears, which is a shame because it all comes down to the handler/owner and their training and love for the animal and people are already a little taken aback by the breed he is. I've also chosen not to crop because I don't think it's necessary, but each owner, provided they're responsible, has the right to their own decision. Thanks for the info!

Vise versa to what you just said. Cropping ears and docking tails will have no effect on the dog's bahavior what so ever. It will have a physical effect though. They will be much more prone to breaking their tails, considering they are very long and thin; Very breakable. With the ears being cropped you are putting them back in their original state. We made floppy ears, so cropping in a benifit. It's OK if you like the natural look better, we just like the cropped look better. Nothing wrong.
Haven't known enough Pits long enough to to argue how easy their tails can break. I do see a lot of them w/o docked tails, though. We bread floppy ears into them? I didn't know that. If true, it's the amount of cropping that I dislike. When they're cropped too short. Ear infections & deafness can result. You love your dog? Then it's OK w/me.
@neomuttley Pits tails are fine, they're thick enough not to break. Ear infections normally occur in dogs WITH floppy ears, not croped. Ear cropping infections wont occur when the ears are croped if the person takes care of the ears properly. If you think about it, not much ear cropping occurs. And when it does occur, it's by responsible vets and owners who know how to care for their dogs. And yes we made floppy ears. Dog's were wild as we all know, there are no floppy eared wild dogs.
In closing, I once saw an animal rescue show. It included a Pitt who was used as a bait dog. His ears were completely removed. It allowed rain water to go in his ear. The Vet warned them this led to a major infection. The infection threatened to require a surgery. The surgery would have removed the middle ear. Leaving him deaf. Some crop jobs are almost this close to the skull. Enjoy doggies :-).

It is purely cosmetic and has been proven medically and scientifically to be purely cosmetic with no benefits for the dog. Owners do this strictly because they think it looks nice. I understand a Rottie's tail simply cause they will probably break their tail from hitting things..I guess with boxers, dobie's or pitbulls its tradition...My Ptibull ears are normal and not cropped simply cause its more healthier to not crop...too many ear infections when its open like that and besides...The pitbulls head is big enough where the full ears are small...To each's own, as long as its done by a professional at early age

Cropping in my mind is like when a person gets a piecing it doesn't hurt to have done and the after care if the tricky part. Like others say before when you fix a dog it is basically the same thing. I have never met a great dane, Doberman, or pitbull that has had a traumatic experience from the cropping. It is the owners choice to make and as long as the dog is properly taken care of there should be no issue.

There are some rotties and presa canarios in my neighbourhood. I have a pitbull owner, but i'm aware of those two because of protecting my little girl. I think The short crop will suit better if you considering those facts.

@williammurderface666 It actually gets ridiculous. When I bought my german shepherd i called every vet in my city to just TAPE the ears up, and none of them would do it!!! And that involves no surgery, no pain killers, etc - I love pits, and if I got one, I'd have to go to another damn city to get it's ears cropped.. I hear ya. People act like the dog's ears are cut with no anesthetic or care.

@shellylanette Why would I want to tape a german shepherds ears up? Because it's standard, it involves no cruelty or pain whatsoever, it prevents ear infections, and you cannot show a GSD with floppy ears?
Also the recovery from cropping of course involves pain killers - a lot of people get it done at the same time as spay and neuter surgery for that very reason.

You should work with another dog for those things, not that dog but with ears taped up. If we want the ears to stand up, stop breeding dogs that need to be taped up...doesn't that make sense? Most GSD ears don't need to be taped to stand fully up. Just opinion though...

Altering improves health by making certain health conditions impossible to get and makes the dog calmer and happier because they do not go into heat and get "frustrated". It also keeps animals from over breeding. Cropping is purely cosmetic in most cases. My dog is not cropped or fixed. Mutilating an animal permanently should not be compared to something like dressing a child either, such a silly analogy.

Thanks for the informative video. I've chosen not to crop my pup's ears, the breed has a really bad rap and they tend to look "meaner" with the cropped ears, which is a shame because it all comes down to the handler/owner and their training and love for the animal and people are already a little taken aback by the breed he is. I've also chosen not to crop because I don't think it's necessary, but each owner, provided they're responsible, has the right to their own decision. Thanks for the info!

Vise versa to what you just said. Cropping ears and docking tails will have no effect on the dog's bahavior what so ever. It will have a physical effect though. They will be much more prone to breaking their tails, considering they are very long and thin; Very breakable. With the ears being cropped you are putting them back in their original state. We made floppy ears, so cropping in a benifit. It's OK if you like the natural look better, we just like the cropped look better. Nothing wrong.

Haven't known enough Pits long enough to to argue how easy their tails can break. I do see a lot of them w/o docked tails, though. We bread floppy ears into them? I didn't know that. If true, it's the amount of cropping that I dislike. When they're cropped too short. Ear infections & deafness can result. You love your dog? Then it's OK w/me.

@neomuttley Pits tails are fine, they're thick enough not to break. Ear infections normally occur in dogs WITH floppy ears, not croped. Ear cropping infections wont occur when the ears are croped if the person takes care of the ears properly. If you think about it, not much ear cropping occurs. And when it does occur, it's by responsible vets and owners who know how to care for their dogs. And yes we made floppy ears. Dog's were wild as we all know, there are no floppy eared wild dogs.

In closing, I once saw an animal rescue show. It included a Pitt who was used as a bait dog. His ears were completely removed. It allowed rain water to go in his ear. The Vet warned them this led to a major infection. The infection threatened to require a surgery. The surgery would have removed the middle ear. Leaving him deaf. Some crop jobs are almost this close to the skull. Enjoy doggies :-).

Dogs usually have their ears cropped when they are just 8 to 12 weeks old. At this stage in their development, the trauma of the procedure can have a strong psychological impact on the maturing pup. The process of taping and retaping a pup's ears to force them to stand erect after they have been cropped can be agonizing for the dog.
