blacks who fought for the South didn't know any better. Many couldn't even read so you don't expect them to know what they're fighting for. Some of the bravest men fought for less clear reasons.
@Bestmanme08 The people who claim or make claim about blacks fighting for the South are all white. I don't know a single black man claiming such bullshit confederate propaganda. Sure, there were some blacks who fought but that's because they didn't know any better-can't read, forced to fight, forced to die, extended provision of slavery. They fought as slaves not freed men.
I followed the Confederate Army's trail to Shiloh from Corinth in 1999. Enjoyed the trip. Great Battlefield Park. For you Civil War buffs there is a new book out titled GETTYSBURG... OTHER TIMES

@595TEXAS Beuregard was 2nd in command stupid he was the one he lost the battle for them. If he had pursued Grants army and defeated them in pittsburg landing then the union would have lost this battle
My great-grandfather fought with the union at Shiloh. Fortunately he was about a quarter of a mile behind the "hornets nest." If he hadn't been I likely wouldn't be here.
from haynes 1776, I just want to say that your great grandfather was very brave along with rest of the union troops who made their stand at the Hornet's nest at Shiloh. They deserve a lot of credit for their actions there, givng General Grant time to re-group and counter-attack. If I was you, i would be a re-en actor and go to Shiloh and re-en act the fighting at the Hornet's nest where your grandfather fought to honor him. I know he would be proud of you idf you did.. Peace.
To Haynes 1776: I don't see how the Civil War soldiers, either side, were able to endure the hardships of fighting that war. However if you're interested I have two 10 minute tapes of my Dad talking about WWII on You Tube. "James Waterworth Remember WWII" His story is pretty fantastic too.
From haynes 1776: yes, you are right> It was hard to believe what those men went through in the war. Its amazing that they can endure marching long distances from state to state, crossing rivers, streams, woods, dirt roads, in mud. rain, snow, heat: its amazing. it shows that the foot soldier made the infantry. you have to be in their shoes. And I will look at that that clip your dad made. Feel free to send me a line Thanks.
Nice Video! I used a link to it on my Great Grandfather's page of our family genealogy. He fought at Shiloh on the Union side.
The men of that generation were brave soldiers who fought for what they believed in. They deserve to be honored for their bravery. Thanks sbrown for a video that does that!
I agree with your points Grant and Sherman were ruthless, it would have taken the North forever to win the war without them especially if McLellan had been left in command. I just finished John Keegans book on the civil war I highly recommend it.
@DouglasEdward84 you really think two generals made the difference ? or the immense amount of difference in manpower, techonology and resources between the two sides?
@spoukas that wasn't my point, I merely stated that Grant and Sherman's abilities and strategies enabled a quicker victory than if a cautious general like MacLellan had been left in command. In the grander scale the other factors come into play.
The Confederate constitution directly remanded the Federal one and struck down the provision "all men are created equal" Lee and others opposed this and secession in general but in the beginning the deciding factor in the war was loyalty to one's State.
We should honor the dead on both sides. However it makes my blood boil to hear ignorant idiots call the confederates a buch of racist fascists. Nothing could be further from the truth. Blacks served in the confederates and were treated better than their union counterparts. Many southerners fought to protect their families. My great-great-great-grandfather fought as a confederate dragoon but he was against seccession.
@aspie101 You're a dumbass. What would a black soldier fight in the confederate army for? His freedom? I'm so tired of YouTube being a white supremacist haven, and black confederates is a long debunked myth by now.
@aspie101 u got thumbs up from me, iam not american but i take a great deal in learning history of america because i believe its story of us all, firstly i believed ( and today i sitll little do ) that confederacy was so much right and heroes in this war, but as i grow older i understand why union had to win. but still, morale and ideals of confederacy will still have a great deal to me, and i will honor them as general lee and his staff as long as i live, even when it means nothing, i will !
@aspie101 Yay, don't talk too much in indiscretion. They fought over might once more again. This battle amongst the friggin' chapel of Shiloh was the most astounding read around the civil war I've ever read.
And the songs I heard around this story still makes me mourn.
i went camping with my family we camped in a cabin my mom when she was little she went camping to where we going to camp and there was this thing that said battle of shiloh and we saw the park it was the actul park where they fighted there was a bunch of graves.

They didn't fight for freedom. They invaded, brought violence, oppression, and tyranny to the Southern states.

Ashokan Farewell is the song. It was the theme to Ken Burns' The Civil War, but was actually written in the early 80s.

@ 4:33 its says the North was fighting for "freedom".
Freedom from who/what?!?
The South was INVADED!
and the war wasnt fought to free the slaves. It was "states rights", and the South had left the Union.
But I guess when you win the war, you get to write the history books, and put whatever spin on it you need to to justify your attrocity
