Actually maybe I'm wrong. I think the default model for sonic has closed eyes and they're set open through sonic's animations. The other animations don't have it. Thus causing sonic to have closed eyes.

The eyes are the Sonic variant of Mario's hat bodygroup I believe. Since mario's hat is remained on in his moveset, the eyes bodygroup sets to the default value, which is closed. For Mario the default bodygroup value is on. I'm a huge nerd.
