great man. This man has endured everything the harshicey wasteland Antartica has thrown at him, he truly was a man with an indomitable will and spirit... A true Irish Legend :)
I think his most admirable quality was how he humbly blended in to everyday life after undertaking such incredible adventures and demonstrating such incredible bravery and comradery. He hardly ever mentioned his travels on returing to annascaul which is incredible. If somebody were to achieve such things nowadays they would be writing books and appearing on chat shows for the rest of their lives. Not Tom Crean. A true hero. Makes me proud to be a kerryman.
Crean is a legend. A model of Irish masculinity that the country could do with now-a-days. Job to do; get on with it, keeping your spirits up is your business and in your own interest.
excellent vid and a fitting tribute to a great man. anyone who is touring about should checkout the south pole inn bar annascaul dingle co kerry, tom creans home place, plenty of memorabilla to be seen there.
I just love the pictures of Tom Crean. I searched and searched the Internet, and Top of World Books has poster prints of the Shackleton expedition, including the one of Tom Crean with the puppies!
A true Irish hero, a brave man and a real adventurer. In a time where most Irish people think this country only existed since 1923, its great to see a fitting tribute for a man like Crean. A tough bloke for sure. We've forgotten too many of our fellow countrymen thanks to a certain minority in Ireland, we won't let it happen again.
I've read books about Shackleton's Endureance and other Antartic adventures. Tom Crean always stood out as the one of toughest sand greatests. Yes, he is a great Irish. But above all, he a great, great human being.
I'm just about to finish the book about Tom Crean. This tribute made me cry, I didn't know when or how he died as I hadn't finished the book and I just think how young he was when he died from such a minor thing after all what he survived and achieved. His family must be so proud of him. I know I am, as an Irish person. For those sniping about him being in the british Navy, if you knew anything about Tom Crean you'd know that he never hid being Irish or Catholic from anyone. He's our Hero
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
So??? Tom was in the British Navy (armed forces) until 1920. momentous times you'll agree. If he'd been sent to shell the GPO in 1916 he'd have done so!!! You do know about the british forces' exploits in Ireland. Don't you?
Oh dear grryos, how sad. Taking a pop at the man's service because he wasn't a psychic who forsaw the massive changes that swept across Ireland. For the record Crean married a very republican woman and on one occasion was held up at gunpoint by Black and Tans. He had no political sympathies as politics didn't interest him. Why don't you go off and listen to the latest Sinn Féin speech and leave your simplistic Brits bad bashing elsewhere as you are insulting a great Irish hero in Crean.
Crean's brother was killed within a few monthes of his reitrement because of the Civil War. he also acted as an alibi to save one civillian from the Tans. if anyting he'd have sympathised with his own country. the reason he joined the britsh nave in the late 19th century is because Ireland was a dominion of the UK and had no adequite navy of its own.
@grryos and you clearly know nothing about the history of Ireland at the time other than the pub stool republican history youre spouting. So you belittle the 350,000 Irishmen who volunteered for service in WWI as well as the 50K already serving in British forces at the time. Many of whom were members of the Irish Volunteers, an organisation dedicated to attaining Home Rule. The British Army was traditionally seen as an area of potential employment for working class Irishmen. Many of the ..
@grryos cont'd: came from the urban poor, joining the army was seen as an opportunity to better oneself. The pay was good in comparison to what was available at home and an allowance was also paid to the spouse of the soldier while he was away on duty. This made the army financially attractive to the Irish poor. Read a book now and then you fuckwit.
Tom Crean is an inspiration to all of us. The man is a legend and I feel proud to have visited his grave. Rest in peace Tom, you are a man amongst men
Those quotes from explorers who retraced Crean's steps later, I bet that was only the South Georgia part, they didn't live on a frozen sea for six months, then live under an upturned boat for a while eating penguins before the 800 mile journey to South Georgia in a rowing boat.
im heading to his pub in the next week or two to take a few photos,he really was a true hero and explorer,it was a pity he could not get the recognition he deserved when he came home but you have to remember this was at a time just after the war of independence and the civil was and a lot of people who served in the english army and navy kept this quiet, today people finally see this man for what he was,a true hero..thankyou for posting the tribute
I discovered this indefatigable man quite by accident and have developed a great reverence for him. He was a true hero and this vid clip does him and those who were with him justice. I am almost reduced to tears sometimes by the sadness of it all, the hardship and indescribable loss throughout. A shame that Tom Crean died from such a trifling thing.
Too many heroic feats to choose one. Saving Cherry and Birdie when caught adrift with them on a floe? The trek to save Evans? The boat journey? Crossing South Georgia? Scott should have taken Crean, Birdie and Bill and he would have lived.
Thank you. Crean was a great, brave, silent Irishman of a type and generation long vanished. Strong men who built the US railroads, the English motorways: loyal, hardworking, undocumented, their tale untold. Heroism was not just the preserve of the officer class.
"The imperturbable Crean" as Worsley said. The threesome look the worse for wear in the photo at 01:10. Hard to imagine what it must have been like, and the strain of knowing the rest of the lads are still on Elephant I salnd.
surely, one of the toughest human beings to have ever walked this earth,an inspiration to all us mere mortals,
