I can picture myself turning my head at 2:25 and looking upwards toward the distant summit and thinking "more pain... come on, let's get moving". Such a slope at 8000 m. altitude must be an absolute killer for the lungs and heart. Kudos to those who made it to the top!
Climbing a mountain like this you have to know your limitations and be sensible it might sound boring but its so easy to get caught out at such heights where low oxygen and fatigue are really affecting your movement and decision making!! alot of it comes down to strong mental power and full respect to anyone who takes the challenge on this beautifully deadly mountain!! Congrats on the summit!
You may think that it's difficult climbing K2, but just try getting a pizza delivered up there. It's a real bitch. You can even here them complaining about it a couple of times in the video.
@SinghKd81 If you want too climb a route alpine style (one single push) then cardio is most likely too be your biggest training effort as you are on the route for a few days only at a time so the altitude does't have a chance to start ripping away your muscle and fat reserves. Just hit a treadmill or do alot of hill running over different terrain. Runing 4-5 times a week is a good goal to aim for. Top this up with a muscle training and core programme and a day climbing each wekend.
@SinghKd81 As for training, the best way to adapt to altitude is too gradually increase your height gain. A few 4000 meter peaks is a good place too start, then move onto 6000m and 7000m before trying an "easy" 8000m peak. For proper training, you need a good balance of muscular and cardio endurance. Uphill running on treadmills for 1 hour to 1 and a half hours is good. Set the incline too ful and the speed too a slow jogging pace. Core and muscular endurance is important as is adding some bulk.
This is my favorite video on youtube. Can anyone tell me how much it costs to climb 20,000+ in himalayas. What kind of training is required (weights or cardio) and how to prepare oneself for such climbs>?
@SinghKd81 Its a really expensive business and many of the himalayan countries make big bucks from climbing tourism. Its around 60,000 US dollars too climb Everest. For K2 you can get a package for around £8000 on some websites, however heres not many comercial exped's too K2. Expeditions can be set up by yourself but you need to go through alot of ligistics whereas with a guided company everything is set up for you.
Hi , are you a professional mountaineer yourself. Actually I dont have any mountaineering experience, but I am training my physical body at the gym for that one day when I will get the chance to climb 20,000 - 26,000... thats what I am waiting for first... after that I can try other challenging mountains. Are you in a mountaineering team or club? Have you climbed in the himalayas?
@SinghKd81 No Im not a pro mountaineer, i plan to do a Mountain guiding qualification next year. I just enjoy reading about mountains and what i required to climb them and then putting everything into practice. I shall be starting my winter walking and climbing this year. I climb in Scotland and although the mountains aren't very big, they can be dangerous. I do hope too travel and climb in the Pakistan Karakorum and in Nepal. My dream is too climb K2 in pure alpine style via the North Ridge.
@SinghKd81 But continue too train and climb, even hiking trails and climbing small easy routes will pay off when you go higher and more technical. K2 is not something too be under-taken lightly, all 8000 meter peaks are in some way technical and physically and mentally challenging. But if you want the glory of K2's crown, you should be prepared to put your life on the line for it, I know I am.
@pikeflyfisherman World Class climbers die on this mountain left and right, the best of the best have a small chance of making it. The weather on k2 is amongst the worst in the world, and is unpredictable. K2 requires a combination of luck and strong mental ability.
How the hell do you get back down off the summit, god that is steep and snowy, no ropes or anything at that angle, geez. Do they just walk down? It looks as though you would fall straight off, even if you were sitting down it looks like you would fall, god they are gutsy people.
@qeull might you didnt know, On July 15, 2008, he fell into a crevasse during an attempt to open a new route to the top of Himalayan mountain Nanga Parbat and is presumed dead :(
Karl is a real inspiration to me at the moment, I love coming and watching this video, I love the alpine style approach, hopefully one day I will stand where karl has stood, on top of the worlds greatest mountain !
Paesaggio eccezionale ...Mi piacerebbe conoscere i Sette Strunz che non hanno apprezzato questo INCREDIBILE Vid ...I'd like to meet the seven "dislikes" in person

There r 2 kinds of hazards. Objective hazards like avalanches, rock falling, weather, e.t.c while Subjective hazard relate to hazards relating to the climber for e.g. equipment failure, lack of concentration, fatigue, exertion & most important the technique to climb. Annapurna is dangerous because its Objectively hazardous but not that dangerous subjectively but K2, is the most dangerous subjectively and equally as hazardous objectively as it has never been climbed in winter! Hence,Killer Mount!
@TheDerick435 Nanga Parbat (8126): No.1 killer mountain due to highest death rate. It's top is the place least visited by man leaving behind Antarctica and moon.
K-2(8611): It's name is Killer-2 having second highest death rate after nanga parbat famously known as death zone.
Annapurna: Death rate nearly equal to nanga parbat but comparatively easy to climb.
@Waleed97j Nanga was more dangerous during the early generation of climbing, e.g. the 50's, 60's, 70's etc but no longer has the same dangerous reputation too it. The K in K2's name stands for Karakorum. The native names for each Karakorum peak was not yet known so they were given the titles K1 K2 K3 K4 etc. Each of the others were soon found to have native names but because of its remoteness (can't be seen from any inhabited town or village) K2 stuck. Broad Peak was another with no native name.
Dream summit! Finally I can see the one and only place on Earth that I would love to reach if I was another man!!! Thank you very very much Karl! Incredible footage! Hat's off for Mahdi and Bonatti!
On July 15, 2008,Karl Unterkircher fell into a crevasse during an attempt to open a new route to the top of Himalayan mountain Nanga Parbat and is presumed dead.
My question is his body never retrieved from the Crevasse he fell in?
I'm not a mountain climber but stumbled across this when watching some skiing vids so my question is this. When you climb a tree or something like a rockwall, it is much easier to climb up than down. Does this hold true for mountaineering and is it this part of the trip (descent) that is most likely to result in death?
@1SammyB1 I'm not a climber either, but from what I read. This is true that is is more difficult going down. I have read that especially a K2 summit attempt is difficult coming down since you are absolutely exhausted by the time you reach the summit.
Orogeny of K2 is different than K1 (ME). It formed in a much shorter time and is mucyh younger than K1. Its pyramical shape dictates that sides of it were cleaved not weathered. Its danger beckons courage. It forgives no error. With K2 you get what you do and don't do. That is all. Mountain climbing is not Tennis or any other sports. It has no rival.
@logiXtOgg The low climbing rate is due to the extreme difficulty in climbing the mountain. My listing of dangerous mountains is still correct, using your numbers.
@thesunshinesurfer why you should judge two summits like that?I find that its completely pointless and rediculus.Everest is Everest, K2 is K2 and Anapurna is Anapurna. Each is beautifull for its very own reasons.
That looks 100 times harder and scarier than Mt Everest. I've read about the tragedy on K2 in 2008 and the bottleneck where the serac fell causing an avalanche looks terrifying-
If they did that without oxygen that is a shame they dont get the same accolade as the Everest boys. What is the most teckie parts of K2? i know the worst prst of Everest is the Khumbu icefall and the Hillary step, (thats about it?)
the most technical part of the Abruzzi Spur route lies further don the mountain below CAMP IV. Lots of super steep technical ice and rock pitches.
Above the shoulder, the route becomes easier (although more dangerous due to altitude and risk of ice falls, avalanches). The most difficult part of summitting is the near 90 degree traverse after passing the Bottleneck
They're the real deal. They don't come any more extreme and tough as these guys from South Tyrol, Italy and Innsbruck, Austria. Alpine style purists. There's no pretense involved, and it's not about catering some "No Fear" Extreme sports image. No joke. It's their way of life. I visited some friends in Innsbruck, to go skiing. Their idea of skiing is not the same as the rest of the world's. Out of bounds, hair-raising, and out-of-hand (for me)!
Many alpinism pioneers were french and 80s,90s have knowned great climbers like Jean Christophe Lafaille (11 8000ers), and Pierre Beghin (5 8000ers). The Alps spread through Monaco, France, Italy, Swiss, Liechtenstein, Austria, Germany and slovenia.
Everest is, if you compare with K2, not very technically difficult to climb, however the extreme altitude, cold, and heavy gear makes it hard enough. Theese factors together can also cause severe mountain illness. You shold have in mind that climbing Everest is one of the absolute toughest things you can ever do in your life. But correct - K2 does have a higher death rate, 1 out of 3 persons who reach the summit dies.
I am just explaining to people like me, who are not so experienced. People make it look like it's "piece of cake" to climb Everest or
K2. That all you need is cash. It is really stupid to simplify this sort of climbing in any way. That can make people do really stupid things. It's not fair either to the brave men and women who actually climbed Everest or K2.
I think many people get tempted by reading about how "easy" it is to summit. I doubt that only experienced climbers would watch this vid.
@JuliusKramer I AGREE WITH YOU MAN. I CLIMBED ELBRUS LAST YEAR AND ITS 4642M. I CAN SAY THAT I AM AND ALWAYS HAVE BEEN VERY VERY FIT AND STRONG BUT I FELT EVERY STEP OF THAT SUMMIT. IT LOOKS EASY ON YOUTUBE OR THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL BUT ON THE MOUNTAIN IT'S VERY DIFFERENT. HATS OFF TO ALL THOSE GUYS WHO CLIMB TO HIGH ALTITUDE......RESPECT.
@ele90 Yeah. I wanna climb it soooo bad. but after 8350ft there are no ropes so you have to start free climbing or attach a rllllllllllly long rope to the already set ones
You're wrong, not every fool in a good shape can reach the summit. K2 is much harder to climb then Everest and has badder weather, and it is the second most dangerous mountain in the world, which makes it harder to climb than Everest, but not everyone can reach the summit.
@elleerre actually I've heard Annapurna 1 is much harder. Listen to the sound bites from Ed Viesturs. He rates K2 at number 2 for difficulty but it took him a few goes to conquer Annapurna.
@maccermacnab K@ is considered more technically demanding then Annapurna 1. Annapurna is more diffucult in the sence that there is constant avy hazard and that is something that will always be on your mind. Ed almost died on K2, he said the mistakes leading up to it were his biggest regreats in life, and he was dodging avalancehes on Annapurna. I think allot of the danger of Annapurna is mental. You know of its past and its avy hazard so you look at it completely different then the others.
@ele90 its only about one thousond feet shorter and much more rugged, it's like the mountain has it own defences too, there are so many avlanches, and ice shelf shear off all the time some time making it nearly impossible to go up or get back down
@ele90 the eiger is harder than everest....the only difficulty with everest is the weather and altitude. K2 is harder than eiger and at high altitude and bad weather :S down to luck and skill :S
I recently summited at Mt Vernon in the Virginia's. That was at a sick elevation that exceeds 12 feet. The death zone was at the bottom of the parking lot - next to the Coke machine out front. I almost didn't make it down however. Like they say, the decent is always the hardest. I tripped over a bag of pop corn a touron had discarded.
You talk utter crap! mt olympus is a tourist attraction around the same hight as Tede in tenerife you utter blooter! It has been climbed WELL before Everestwas in 1952
Is this truly Karl from the 1986 k2 disaster where 13 people died??? k2 is considered the hardest mountain on earth becasue of its combination of danger, altitude, and difficulty. Even though k2 is the hardest there are many other peaks which are harder to climb
You are wrong man! Brokeback Mountain is a movie. Perhaps you want say: "Broad Peak" in Karakorum ( Pakistan ). But the´re are more dangerous Mountains: 1. Annapurna 2.k2 3.Nanga Parbat 4.Kangchendzönga 5.Manaslu . . . . 11.Broad Peak
Sorry that makes K2 the third most dangerous mountain in the world. I still think Brokeback is the most dangerous, did you ever see the movie? I always wanted to be a cowboy but since i saw that movie, hell no.
I´m sorry man,but i din´t know this Mountain " Brokeback" , where is he?
I still think you mean the Broad Peak, and this Mountain is one of the easyist of all 8000. He has got a bright summit and it is not difficult to get on his top. It´s only a long way too get on his summit!
I think there might be somewhat of a misunderstanding here. LK is attempting to make a gay joke....unfortunately youtube is a bad place to try and have a serious discussion.
@LKPhonicsMonkey Indeeed, give me Annupurna any day over being stuck on a secluded hill with them guys. haha It does slightly worry me that you actually watched the movie though :P
On a serios note though, Annupurna does indeed have the highest death rate. But from the pieces of information iv read K2 is probly still the most challeging. The deaths on Annupurna are primaroly down to huge ice ceracs that are so prone to collapse. That an the fever of pushing yourself past your limit to achieve something very few have.
@LKPhonicsMonkey Funny comment. You are right, waking up in the middle of the night at the peak of Brokeback Mtn with a foreign object inside you can be fatal for some.
Now call and order one large pizza.

@ryznaga That is not entirly correct.
The total death rate on Everest is 5.7% (Which is about 1/18)
For K2 its 23,4% (About 1/4)
And for Annapurna its 42,5% (which is correctly stated about 1/2)
However the death rate for Annapurna the last 20 years is only about 20%

The 2:30 to 3:00 is the unmistakeable sound of Enigma. The song is called Carly's song (age of loneliness).
Here is my advice nomi 108, buy all their albums. Lovely music!

If they did that without oxygen that is a shame they dont get the same accolade as the Everest boys. What is the most teckie parts of K2? i know the worst prst of Everest is the Khumbu icefall and the Hillary step, (thats about it?)
scrumdownscott 1 year ago
the most technical part of the Abruzzi Spur route lies further don the mountain below CAMP IV. Lots of super steep technical ice and rock pitches.
Above the shoulder, the route becomes easier (although more dangerous due to altitude and risk of ice falls, avalanches). The most difficult part of summitting is the near 90 degree traverse after passing the Bottleneck

worst part of k2 is the death zone really killing and tough

WOT, NO O'S?
Everestlad 1 year ago
They're the real deal. They don't come any more extreme and tough as these guys from South Tyrol, Italy and Innsbruck, Austria. Alpine style purists. There's no pretense involved, and it's not about catering some "No Fear" Extreme sports image. No joke. It's their way of life. I visited some friends in Innsbruck, to go skiing. Their idea of skiing is not the same as the rest of the world's. Out of bounds, hair-raising, and out-of-hand (for me)!
I have nothing to offer them but awe & respect.
cliklab 1 year ago 17
Did they really do that with no O's?

Good comment buy the way.

I have read that k2 is much harder to climb than everest.
ele90 2 years ago 61
Everest is, if you compare with K2, not very technically difficult to climb, however the extreme altitude, cold, and heavy gear makes it hard enough. Theese factors together can also cause severe mountain illness. You shold have in mind that climbing Everest is one of the absolute toughest things you can ever do in your life. But correct - K2 does have a higher death rate, 1 out of 3 persons who reach the summit dies.

Tell us something we dont know, do you think people that clicked on this, did it by accident?
scrumdownscott 1 year ago
I am just explaining to people like me, who are not so experienced. People make it look like it's "piece of cake" to climb Everest or
K2. That all you need is cash. It is really stupid to simplify this sort of climbing in any way. That can make people do really stupid things. It's not fair either to the brave men and women who actually climbed Everest or K2.
I think many people get tempted by reading about how "easy" it is to summit. I doubt that only experienced climbers would watch this vid.
JuliusKramer 1 year ago

Every fool in good shape can climb Everest in the right day. That's why every year tens of people reach the summit.
K2 is THE MOUNTAIN.
elleerre 1 year ago
@elleerre
You're wrong, not every fool in a good shape can reach the summit. K2 is much harder to climb then Everest and has badder weather, and it is the second most dangerous mountain in the world, which makes it harder to climb than Everest, but not everyone can reach the summit.
hawaiifruit123 1 year ago
@elleerre actually I've heard Annapurna 1 is much harder. Listen to the sound bites from Ed Viesturs. He rates K2 at number 2 for difficulty but it took him a few goes to conquer Annapurna.
maccermacnab 1 year ago
@maccermacnab K@ is considered more technically demanding then Annapurna 1. Annapurna is more diffucult in the sence that there is constant avy hazard and that is something that will always be on your mind. Ed almost died on K2, he said the mistakes leading up to it were his biggest regreats in life, and he was dodging avalancehes on Annapurna. I think allot of the danger of Annapurna is mental. You know of its past and its avy hazard so you look at it completely different then the others.

It is much harder than Everest.
hawaiifruit123 1 year ago
@ele90 yes, any fit fool can get up everest if he has money...
WilliamTheSilverBack 1 year ago
@ele90 its only about one thousond feet shorter and much more rugged, it's like the mountain has it own defences too, there are so many avlanches, and ice shelf shear off all the time some time making it nearly impossible to go up or get back down
TheCracka55 1 year ago
@ele90 any rich fool can climb everest now...k2 will follow, and all the other 8000 ers
WilliamTheSilverBack 1 year ago
@ele90 the eiger is harder than everest....the only difficulty with everest is the weather and altitude. K2 is harder than eiger and at high altitude and bad weather :S down to luck and skill :S
WilliamTheSilverBack 1 year ago
@ele90 because its steeper.
SJARIZONAa 1 year ago
@ele90 It is. Although a little bit lower it is considered a much more technical climb.

I recently summited at Mt Vernon in the Virginia's. That was at a sick elevation that exceeds 12 feet. The death zone was at the bottom of the parking lot - next to the Coke machine out front. I almost didn't make it down however. Like they say, the decent is always the hardest. I tripped over a bag of pop corn a touron had discarded.

surtuo 2 years ago
Is this truly Karl from the 1986 k2 disaster where 13 people died??? k2 is considered the hardest mountain on earth becasue of its combination of danger, altitude, and difficulty. Even though k2 is the hardest there are many other peaks which are harder to climb

K2 is the second most dangerous mountain in the world after Brokeback Mountain.

stelware0 2 years ago
Sorry that makes K2 the third most dangerous mountain in the world. I still think Brokeback is the most dangerous, did you ever see the movie? I always wanted to be a cowboy but since i saw that movie, hell no.
LKPhonicsMonkey 2 years ago 33
I´m sorry man,but i din´t know this Mountain " Brokeback" , where is he?
I still think you mean the Broad Peak, and this Mountain is one of the easyist of all 8000. He has got a bright summit and it is not difficult to get on his top. It´s only a long way too get on his summit!
stelware0 2 years ago
I think there might be somewhat of a misunderstanding here. LK is attempting to make a gay joke....unfortunately youtube is a bad place to try and have a serious discussion.
Crash250f 2 years ago
@LKPhonicsMonkey Indeeed, give me Annupurna any day over being stuck on a secluded hill with them guys. haha It does slightly worry me that you actually watched the movie though :P
petejones216 2 years ago
On a serios note though, Annupurna does indeed have the highest death rate. But from the pieces of information iv read K2 is probly still the most challeging. The deaths on Annupurna are primaroly down to huge ice ceracs that are so prone to collapse. That an the fever of pushing yourself past your limit to achieve something very few have.
petejones216 2 years ago
@LKPhonicsMonkey Funny comment. You are right, waking up in the middle of the night at the peak of Brokeback Mtn with a foreign object inside you can be fatal for some.
