Oh god, Palpatine's suggestions almost made me die of laughter. I think he missed an important game that also destroyed a treasured franchise with it's bullshit cliches, boring one dimensional heroes, and killing off it's most popular character and villian; it's called Resident Evil 5!!!
Hey Redlettermedia my I ask 1. thing: how did Lucas hace less control over the making of Episode IV then the making of Episode I?? You say with control over every aspecty fro the writing to the, castingg directing etc, but Lucas wrote and directed Episode IV by himself, you then say that when he made A New Hope, there was a secomd screenwrier, and excecetiv producer, but Kasdan only wrote on V and VI, and Gary Kiurtz was only the producer niot the excecutive!!!! So how had Lucas less control????
@reviewreviewer1 He story and screenwrote, directed and excexcutive produced both films, so how would he hace less control opveer IV then over I?????????
@reviewreviewer1 I believe back then even though he wanted to do everything without meddling from outsiders outsiders got there say in and effected his work. Nowadays with those three movies in particular he called all the shots and everybody did what he told them too do or they were fired for meddling.
@shadowhexogram Well if back then he didn`t want meddling weither, why sdidn`t he jist fire them aswell??/ he owned the films, they were his projects. he was the boss. Soo why would he allow that, he could just fire em.
@reviewreviewer1 Well back then he was a young film maker and didn't have a lot under his belt so he really didn't have the power to fire people like he could now. As an artist I hear all the time about people who sent there stuff to hollywood and had it turned inside out by them. I'm not quite sure how that happens but it happens alot and one would assume the young george lucas could have been a victim to it as well.
@shadowhexogram Well the problem is Lucas had ownership over the films, and thereby could fire or just shut uop anuyone who worked for him. It`s true artists are jmedled ith, but this is becfause they surrender ownership and c ontrol, whicjh is something Lucas didn`t. plus his number 1 conceern was control, meaning hee never made compromises. there are big reports of this in documentaries he actualy fired the editor, and basixly won a fight and fotrced the cinematogropher, to do what hwe wanted.
@shadowhexogram Yeah that was my problem with his point about what if Lucas had the same control back then, he did and Episode IV is the result. Also what are your thoughts on the prequels and redlettermedia??????
@reviewreviewer1 Well I've seen a lot of people tackle these prequels before but I think he did it really well or at least was the most detailed and entertaining that I've seen. And maybe it's just me but after hearing all these people talk about whats wrong I kinda want to see someone actually say what could have been done right like someone tackle the task of making the prequels the movies we would have liked without completely changing everything.
@reviewreviewer1 When I actually saw them. Well the first one I forgot I was young probably fell asleep. The second one I also barely remember when I first saw it. The third one though I remember and at the moment I thought it was pretty good. Obviously as years passed and reviews like these came along I started to think otherwise. When spike threw that marathon I watched all of them. They are actually really boring when there isn't a fight going on.
1. Lucas had to film IV (mostly) in the real world, not a green screen studio. Location filming = less control than CGI 'magic'.
2. In 1977 nobody gave a fuck who George Lucas was compared to 1999. His added clout meant less input from other sources both formally and informally.
3. Do not question Mr. Plinkett unless you don't want he should send you a pizza roll.
@donfolstar 1. Well less control in terms of effects and fiolmaking techniques, not over the crew, 2. it doesn`t matter wheter the crew believe him, he wss there boss he could fire them, and shuit them up, so alrtough they vould refuse tio wor, they could not fdemand input, 3. I just ate a pizza, and since redlettermedia a blocked me with his other account, I stopped being a fan.
1. Art through Adversity. Adversity means he had to rely on input from others. CGI = no adversity.
2. You need to research how movies are made. Lucas only directed the IV, not V or VI. He was not the producer of any of them, nor was he the financier of the first movie.
3. So you are butt hurt about being blocked and your retaliation is typing garbled half thoughts on his youtube videos- classy.
I just watched the review again! This definitely requires repeated viewings just to get all the details and injokes! For example I love when your talking about all the different kinds of media and on 7:45 you inserted a Danish Facebook page - I just noticed that last night! I thought that was pretty awesome, me being Danish and all... "Internet Porno!" :D
@mst3k4evur Well, to be fair, there is lots of shit happening in the Star Trek universe happening "behind the scenes" (so to speak). Although I will admit that the Enterprise does tend to attract more then it's share of huge galactic political bullshit.
The ice planet thing is kinda ridiculous, though. More so than a disproportionately busy ship, anyways.
The problem is the excuses for involving the enterprise become really weak. Look at the beginning of Generations: We're the only ship in range!...even though there should be thousands of ships in range.
The ice planet was silly I admit, but I still believe any other plot device to bring several main characters together would have to be either silly or very long and drawn out.
@mst3k4evur Well yeah that's retarded, too, since they're like at Earth and all that. I'm just saying that EVERYTHING doesn't happen to the Enterprise, they do take pains to mention shit happening with other ships pretty regularly otherwise it would be like a whole new level of retarded. I can buy them being days or even weeks away from other ships though. I'm sure it'll be like that in real life one day, space is ginormous...
Yes, but warp makes it smaller so I imagine any number of ships could have been there as faster than the Enterprise. :D By the way, scientists? Get on that. Otherwise I'll never have an alien girlfriend... :(
You seriously thought the movie with Romulan rednecks from the future was good? The bad guys were miners. What's next, an invasion of future baristas?
I'm happy with a star trek review, as long as there are no more baby7's day out or copdog type reviews. the obviously bad combined movies, those are easy bait for anybody.
The Baby's Day Out review was cunt-bustingly funny. Obviously the movie was awful, but hearing Plinkett explain why, then listening to him as he has some kind of panic-attack freak-out due to his exasperation with it, was the most fun I've ever had watching anything.
@terratrema it was good, i agree. But anyone can make jokes about bad movies. Mr, Plinkett is very funny, and it was enjoyable, but the only problem was, it was easy. Mr. Plinkett (if that is his real name) taking on the harder ones. while Star Wars I and II, were bad he just tore them up, and the only one of the trilogy i liked was III and i want to see what he does with it. (I personally only had problem with the dialogue and the fact that Palpatine ages so quickly, always bugged me)
I love that picture of Mr Plinkett you use for this exchange most because when he mentions Gundam and it flashes back to Plinkett, that facial expression and dead silent response fits perfectly in retort. I really wonder if people actually do request some of this shit, haha
Really glad to see a new review up, and not of a baby-related movie. Although I did watch that one all the way through as well. Mr. P, this review actually taught me something about ST. I have watched every ST show and movie several times, and I have never noticed that any thought was put into the way turbolifts work. I guess I am not as big of a nerd as I once feared. So thanks for that!
i thought he was working on ep3 the whole time. now it turns out he was actually busy with star trek... fuuuuuuuuuuuck! that means i'm gonna have to wait for a lot more months.
Huh? But Star Trek was awesome. In fact, it's the only Star Trek-related thing I like. Ah whatever, the review should still be worth it for the humor.
Why? Have you never given old trek a chance or something? Old trek at it's best is real quality entertainment and good drama. Check out such episodes like "City on the edge of forever", "Best of Both Worlds" and "In the Pale Moonlight" if you don't believe me. All you have to do is keep an open mind and enjoy them for what they are rather than what you would want them to be.
This is your first fail review. It's like you gave the movie a pass because it is honest about itself being a mindless action movie. Granted, you picked out a few problems in the movie, but you totally ignored the major problems.
@JakemanTube how dare you question the man who eloquently savaged Generations: The Worst Film EVER Made and redeemed an entire generation from George Lucas' ABORTION
@JakemanTube Thank you! It was better than the most recent ST and SW films in the same way a bowl of wallpaper paste is better than a bowl of s*** for breakfast. I still wouldn't call it "good" though.
Yeah well he makes a good point, the objective really was to just take an established brand name that people would respond favorably to and then drape it over a big dumb popcorn flick in order to sell tickets to the plebs. So I guess yeah, mission accomplished Paramount...you bastards.
I guess it really isn't as bad as the prequels, because unlike George they were never under the self delusion that they were making great art. Just the same after this movie I gave up on Star Trek.
@JakemanTube It was a good movie. Not every movie should or needs to be saturated with plot conventions and massive story detail. Some movies are action movies, and as an action movie Star Trek was good. Hollywood doesn't do fan service. Take what you can get and don't complain.
@second2151 Star Trek didn't get to where it is today with action sequences. You might recall Plinkett's other Trek reviews where he posted stats showing how boxoffice decreased as mindless action increased. I think it was in his Nemesis review. Mindless action isn't a good quality. It is just an easy way to cash out of a franchise while at the same time destroying it. It takes much more effort to create quality Trek movies.
@JakemanTube 1. The new movie destroyed it's predecessors at the box office BECAUSE it wasn't fan service like the others. 2. My entire movie is that it isn't a "Trek Movie." I'm not a fan of Star Trek. I could care less about someone putting in time and effort to create movies that fit Trek canon and satisfy fans. If I'm paying dollars at the theater I want bang for my buck. I'm not saying Star Trek deserves a damned academy. I'm saying it has far more and wider appeal than other Trek movies.
@second2151 That is beside the point. The movie was awful in so many ways. I could make a traditional Plinkett-style review of my own that is no less than 5 hours, picking apart everything that is awful about the movie. For some reason he chose not to do a traditional review of Star Trek 2009. At least Plinkett called out the intended audience for being mindless masses who don't like to think. But he didn't hold it against you like he should have.
@JakemanTube See now you're making personal assaults against my tastes. Just because a movie isn't a cerebral masterpiece doesn't mean it isn't good entertainment. Go back and watch A New Hope. That movie is full corny bullshit and MASSIVE plot holes. But it's still a great movie, because as a whole it's entertaining.
@second2151 Plinkett already characterized fans of Star Trek 2009. I am merely repeating it. It's OK if you don't like thinking. You are in the majority so Plinkett will likely give you a pass.
@JakemanTube Sigh. You discredit him and then use his opinions as arguments. You contradict yourself regularly and have yet to actually respond to anything. Plinkett liked the movie. I liked the movie. Most everyone except Trek nerds liked the movie. It's a good movie. Your oversensitive and for some god-forsaken reason take the fact that they made a Star Trek movie that WASN'T just porn for geeks as a personal insult. You should be glad Trek is getting rep that doesn't involve basements.
@second2151 You are right. I am a bitter and confused trek nerd. I contradict myself with every reply I make. I am very sorry for taking it out on you. Let me know if there is any way I can make it up to you. Sorry everyone.
@JakemanTube It won an Oscar. It got four nominations. It made more than the other movies combined. It's gotten overwhelmingly positive reviews. You can say what you want about the majority but if 94% of the populace finds something tasteful then it's tasteful. That's how art works. That said, you can make it up by sending me some pizza rolls. Put them in an envelope and make sure they're warm.
@second2151 Here is what I disliked: underdeveloped characters undeveloped villain one dimensional crew numerous plot holes nonsensical plot devices numerous scientific inaccuracies numerous trek inaccuracies spammy visual distractions (e.g. lens flares) over and under-explanations for everything pubescence vulcans as closet humans (has to do with one-dimensionality) no-name races sensory overload emotion overload undeveloped spock / ohura relationship vulcans lying (sarek in particular)
@JakemanTube Character development was excellent; it's a two hour introductory movie it's not going to be The Odyssey. as to the visual style that was possibly my favorite aspect. Remember it's an action film. Visuals are a huge piece of the atmosphere. Trek inaccuracies I can't attest to, scientific inaccuracies are a moot point seeing as Star Trek as whole is based mostly on theoretical science (nerve pinches, time travel, parallel existence, FTL physics, etc.)
@JakemanTube Don't get me wrong, I can totally see how a long time Trek fan would hate this movie. But that doesn't make everyone who does like this movie an imbecile. It makes them not long-time Trek fans. The movie is assuming that 90% of it's viewing base knows nothing of Star Trek. It's not aiming to further develop or expand the Star Trek canon, it's aiming to present the ST universe in a package that can appeal to a wide range of audiences.
@JakemanTube i do hence this move was face palm bad for me, i mean if they had spent maybe 5 minutes looking junk up when writing the script and tweaked a few of the more omg stupid "science" then this movie could have really worked as a whole as a good action movie.
great review tho i mean what worked worked and what did not just didn't. if i were drunk or stoned or on lsd this movie would have been epic.
@JakemanTube Eh maybe not excellent. But the main cast had better development than most any other action movie. You sound like you want an entire season of plot crammed into a movie. Maybe it's a bad Star Trek movie, I wouldn't know. But it's a good movie movie.
@LMTR14 One Oscar. Four nominations. I realize your idea of a good movie is most likely an inbred woman being violated by a horse, but that doesn't change the fact that Star Trek got excellent reviews. Or are you just smarter than all of us?
@second2151 "It won an Oscar. It got four nominations. It made more than the other movies combined. It's gotten overwhelmingly positive reviews. You can say what you want about the majority but if 94% of the populace finds something tasteful then it's tasteful."
No, this is the fallacy known as "appeal to majority/authority" and it doesn't make something tasteful.
Let's all go to the lobby, let's all go to the lobby, let's all go to the lobby, to get ourselves a treat! Delicious things to eat! The popcorn can't be beat! The sparkling drinks are just dandy, the chocolate bars and the candy, SOooo, let's all go to the lobby to get ourselves a treat! So let's all go to the lobby.... to get ourselves a treat!

sir. I rebuke you.

@JakemanTube Thank you! It was better than the most recent ST and SW films in the same way a bowl of wallpaper paste is better than a bowl of s*** for breakfast. I still wouldn't call it "good" though.

@JakemanTube
AmazingL4rry 1 year ago
@JakemanTube It was a good movie. Not every movie should or needs to be saturated with plot conventions and massive story detail. Some movies are action movies, and as an action movie Star Trek was good. Hollywood doesn't do fan service. Take what you can get and don't complain.
second2151 1 year ago
@second2151 Star Trek didn't get to where it is today with action sequences. You might recall Plinkett's other Trek reviews where he posted stats showing how boxoffice decreased as mindless action increased. I think it was in his Nemesis review. Mindless action isn't a good quality. It is just an easy way to cash out of a franchise while at the same time destroying it. It takes much more effort to create quality Trek movies.
JakemanTube 1 year ago
@JakemanTube 1. The new movie destroyed it's predecessors at the box office BECAUSE it wasn't fan service like the others. 2. My entire movie is that it isn't a "Trek Movie." I'm not a fan of Star Trek. I could care less about someone putting in time and effort to create movies that fit Trek canon and satisfy fans. If I'm paying dollars at the theater I want bang for my buck. I'm not saying Star Trek deserves a damned academy. I'm saying it has far more and wider appeal than other Trek movies.
second2151 1 year ago
@second2151 That is beside the point. The movie was awful in so many ways. I could make a traditional Plinkett-style review of my own that is no less than 5 hours, picking apart everything that is awful about the movie. For some reason he chose not to do a traditional review of Star Trek 2009. At least Plinkett called out the intended audience for being mindless masses who don't like to think. But he didn't hold it against you like he should have.
JakemanTube 1 year ago
@JakemanTube See now you're making personal assaults against my tastes. Just because a movie isn't a cerebral masterpiece doesn't mean it isn't good entertainment. Go back and watch A New Hope. That movie is full corny bullshit and MASSIVE plot holes. But it's still a great movie, because as a whole it's entertaining.
second2151 1 year ago
@second2151 Plinkett already characterized fans of Star Trek 2009. I am merely repeating it. It's OK if you don't like thinking. You are in the majority so Plinkett will likely give you a pass.
JakemanTube 1 year ago
@JakemanTube Sigh. You discredit him and then use his opinions as arguments. You contradict yourself regularly and have yet to actually respond to anything. Plinkett liked the movie. I liked the movie. Most everyone except Trek nerds liked the movie. It's a good movie. Your oversensitive and for some god-forsaken reason take the fact that they made a Star Trek movie that WASN'T just porn for geeks as a personal insult. You should be glad Trek is getting rep that doesn't involve basements.
second2151 1 year ago

@JakemanTube now what parts did you like?
JakemanTube 1 year ago
@JakemanTube Character development was excellent; it's a two hour introductory movie it's not going to be The Odyssey. as to the visual style that was possibly my favorite aspect. Remember it's an action film. Visuals are a huge piece of the atmosphere. Trek inaccuracies I can't attest to, scientific inaccuracies are a moot point seeing as Star Trek as whole is based mostly on theoretical science (nerve pinches, time travel, parallel existence, FTL physics, etc.)
second2151 1 year ago
@JakemanTube Don't get me wrong, I can totally see how a long time Trek fan would hate this movie. But that doesn't make everyone who does like this movie an imbecile. It makes them not long-time Trek fans. The movie is assuming that 90% of it's viewing base knows nothing of Star Trek. It's not aiming to further develop or expand the Star Trek canon, it's aiming to present the ST universe in a package that can appeal to a wide range of audiences.

@second2151 Character dev was excellent? I don't know what to say to that. I sense a total disconnect between us. Oh well.

@JakemanTube Do you know how a black hole works?
JakemanTube 1 year ago
@JakemanTube i do hence this move was face palm bad for me, i mean if they had spent maybe 5 minutes looking junk up when writing the script and tweaked a few of the more omg stupid "science" then this movie could have really worked as a whole as a good action movie.
great review tho i mean what worked worked and what did not just didn't. if i were drunk or stoned or on lsd this movie would have been epic.
skywolf23 1 year ago
@JakemanTube Eh maybe not excellent. But the main cast had better development than most any other action movie. You sound like you want an entire season of plot crammed into a movie. Maybe it's a bad Star Trek movie, I wouldn't know. But it's a good movie movie.

@LMTR14 One Oscar. Four nominations. I realize your idea of a good movie is most likely an inbred woman being violated by a horse, but that doesn't change the fact that Star Trek got excellent reviews. Or are you just smarter than all of us?

No, this is the fallacy known as "appeal to majority/authority" and it doesn't make something tasteful.
