It occasionally happens, especially with some of the older stuff. It's usually retconned and/or retold with the prequel movies in mind.

However, it's just foolishness to brand the entire EU as useless. In fact, there are some characters like Jocasta Nu who appeared in books before appearing in the films.

It began with Soldier For the Empire, continued with Rebel Agent, and concluded with Jedi Knight. I bought all three for the artwork and to revisit some cherished childhood memories. You can probably find them at an independent comic book store like Comic Relief in Berkeley, California.

It was the biggest fun ive had with star wars games.. then Jedi outcast came out and it made things even better,.,. but sad about Jedi academy.. i didnt like it at all :(
