@napkinshower :haha, I can see how you might think it's fake, but I assure you it's not. Check out other mandala drum videos or see their website to see the potential of this beast of an instrument. It's so much fun!!
love it-great sitar combo's to complimentent the melodic rhythms plus the overall feel of subtlety which of course Buddha was all about-subtlties & nuaince.I have the first generation Korg 'wavedrum' which IS still great, but I'm gonna have to eventually invest in one of these-way easier to intergrate with an 'organic' kit,but I still have some 3-10'' rolands in places around my 5 peice(just added a 10'' to my 13'' & 16'' floor tom) but its runs off the older dc-6 module/brain.
@Ticsiber it has all these different trigger zones on it and using it as a bass drum would defeat its purpose, as your beater would only hit it on one zone.
@killerdrummer88: The player chooses the note sequence in the Virtual Brain app that is being triggered by the pad. The drum is connected by USB to a computer running the Virtual Brain app. That's where all the samples are and that's where the setup is. If you want scales instead of single triggers you choose the root note, scale type, scale pattern, scale range and scale step for any zone. For example, choose root: C3, scale: Indian, pattern: Full Wave Up, range: 12, step 1. You control it.
@KillerDrummer88: That's definitely not random. It's moving nicely up and down through set scales with certain ranges and step patterns. The different zones are complementary scales so they fit together musically. There's a lot of theory behind that preset. Nothing random at all.
@metopia69 YEP I know it's this way but I don't get it,.... in the center he gets all the sound he wants, but still it seems he plays at the same power ..
@KillerDrummer88: You can tell he's got the pad set to 3 concentric zones with different scale patterns and instruments and effects in each zone. You can hear the outermost zone has an auto-pan effect on it. The power he strikes with dictates the velocity of each sound played. When he hits harder in any zone it plays that note louder. The scales are stepped through automatically with each hit and the note volumes are related to his strike power, as expected.
@metopia69 .....ok, I agree with that, and already figured it out!! ... but, the sequence of notes chosen by the pad is random, or what?? ... if the power decides the velocity, how can the player control it like it was a kind of keyboard, and choose the note sequence?? does he program it before, or whattt?? From what u say I think it's like I thought, the notes are simply in tune one another, but the sequence is random..and ok, all the stuff he chooses where to hit and how strong... but!?!?
@KillerDrummer88 : i DID play at the roughly the same power, but the setting is that on the center ZONE, it moves through the chosen scale, of the chosen note, through the chosen steps...then my power just dictates the volume of each note heard, UNLESS i also choose to control things like PANNING, FX parameters, FX send values etc through my velocity, which it can do as well.
@MerkabaPilot I readed your explaination.... so the notes are not selected in the order you'll play them? ...cos, if it's not, the notes will come out, not in random tonality, but in random order correctly in the tonality... which is mike playing (in C major, I suppose) random white keys on the piano... isn't it? if you can't choose the EXACT sequence of note, it's like...randomizing in the tonality, moving maybe in scales, but randomizing xD
@KillerDrummer88 : You either choose a scale for the notes to follow OR a completely random pattern. No option yet to choose YOUR OWN made up patterns, but that would be awesome if itd show up on a software update, everyone's asking for it on the forums.
@KillerDrummer88 : Yes, what killerdrummer88 has explained so far is right. The notes are not random at all unless you WANT them to be. On my preset they are certainly not random at all. I explained the settings for my preset on a previous comment on the 1st page I believe, check em out if u want.
@MerkabaPilot hey man thanks for answering ;) as I thought, you choose the velocity, but you have to "tell" previously what is the sequence you're gonna hit, right?? so you can hit whenever you want and the pad is like "waiting the 23rd note, which is a C#" right? I think like Akira Jimbo does on his pads (of course your mandala are incredible intruments, not simple pads ;) ) So this is the work you did on this vid?? select the full sequence of notes? :) Thanks!
I chose the scale, the length of it & the way it goes around that scale; I chose either Full wave Up or Wave Up: THAT means my hits will control the keys of that scale being triggered, first Up the wave then when it reaches its set length, start going down the wave pattern of the scale note. 'Wave Up only goes up & down through its initial chosen octave, whereas 'Full Wave Up' 1st goes UP those chosen scales, then down through its octave and continuing that scale down further octaves.
wow man. I'm thinkin of buyin one of these. But I see there like $400, Do you only have to buy the drum or do u then have to buy additional shit to go with it?
Only $350 for the drum and its software. it does everything within it. No need for anything else. To record/loop and whatnot you can patch it through whatever audio program you like.
Thanks!! Glad you like it. I'm not a pro drummer at all, but playing with this thing is infinitely fun! I have a 2nd one now so Imma do more vids soon.
I'll tell you if you tell me if it was you who filmed the Tool video on your page, and how? And with what camera did you film it with? It's awesome! Waddaya say? ...fair trade? :-)
I didn't film the video lol. I just found it as some sample for some guys bootleg website. I didn't see any other vids of this on here so I thought I'd share it.
Ahh..Ok, can't blame me for trying. Well, anyhow, the preset is separated into 3 zones all in a G#2 Gamelan scale, Zone 1 being a Pizzicato, 2 a Guitar Harmonics and 3 a Sitar...1 & 2 Fullm wave up then 3 just Up wave. Also I believe I set sitar to continuous panning Left to Right.... enjoy the settings and if you record something let me know! I'd like to see. :-D
thanks i cant wait to try out this setting. I have 5 and they are unbelievable to play all at once. its like being a one man band when you use 3 or more
@thelema3131 : Wow man, you have 5?! Awesomeness. I have two but haven't shot a video of it yet. Five must be nuts!! Can't even wrap my head around where I'd start with five of them..... But must...def..try! Shoot videos man, I wanna see!!! :-)
