Saw him one time at a gig on solo piano, it was pouring rain outside, he opened the show with a 30 minute intro into the "Mandolin Rain"....blew my mind...it was cross between bluegrass meets jazz. The best on piano, no doubt a master on two handed independence..
@PumpkinLIps you are so right, it's a sinister song. I imagine the wife dancing with her husband on the dance hall floor at the wedding. A beautiful moment changed to fear when she looks over to see the Country Doctor staring at her from a dark corner of the room.

I never find anything less than wonder at Bruce's freeform improv piano technique. I wont go so far to say he is the best because I don't think there is one. Oscar Peterson, Keith Emerson, Keith Jarret, Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Michell Legrand...the list goes on and they all have a stamp of brilliance in how they perform on the instrument, that is uniquely original to themselves. Bruce Hornsby deserves a place among the very best for sure. It's purely opinion as to where that place exists.
I Love this Video and also I checked out your Channel. Very interesting! If you need any help getting this Video and your Channel exposed to were it is top in all the search I found this site called tubeviews.(net) that has took my breath away. I'm working on my 4th Channel now, this one I just made. My Videos are getting so many hits now. Check it out and keep in touch.
I've been playing piano for 35 years. I've had many many influences and favorites. I've played countless gigs.
That being said....Bruce Hornsby is the single greatest, best ever piano player that ever lived. Period. There is no debate needed here. My 35 years of playing qualifies me to declare that Mr. Hornsby IS the best piano player that EVER LIVED.
Bruce appears to be very humble... and talented. I don't compare musicians because each one creates a different musical palate. When I hear BH, I hear rural America, farmland and covered bridges. It's a comforting sound, soft and powerful.
@pianobob1966 By the way, I have another version of this song, also played by Bruce and his band, which sounds great , but I have to say that the piano solo played here is simply AWESOME!!
Check out Frankie Moreno and his band perform this Bruce Hornsby song! Go to either BetsysView or Frankie Moreno~ The Way It Is (Bruce Hornsby). Tell me Frankie isn't great! And check out his piano work!!!
What captivates me is the left hand is just as active as his right; constantly moving. His technique is impeccable and his jazz influence undeniable: here is a real musician.
He's a lesson for the cliche person that says they like and listen to "everything". He will test that assertion and then some.
one of the greatest things i've ever read, I've seen bruce with the Dead, solo, his band and with Ricky Skaggs. One of the most accomplished musicians i've come across in my years of listening to music. If you appreciate what you're listening to, his music tugs on the heart strings every time.
Seems like he did some kind of great metamorphisis from the Bruce Hornsby who first captured me, on a late night radio show when I was young, his playing has, incredibly enough, elevated into a whole new echelon of excellence, but what I love most is, it's still intrinsically Bruce, every note every phrase is his unmistakable signature.
Arguably my greatest musical inspiration. Bruce single handidly inspired me to play piano. I love his use of two hand interdepence, plus he found a way to use hybrid chords in the pop/rock/latin/jazz scene. He truly pulls from the entire music library. He's a musician's musician, and as a professional myself, I always appreciate that about him.

Country Doctor is such a dark song. It's so funny that they play it occasionally at Stop and Shop.

I'm a huge fan of Mr. Hornsby, but he certainly is not the best player ever. But i love his style though.

sure, he is great, but to put him above such idols as Sergei Rachmaninoff, Mozart, Bach, is silly.
His singing, piano, and the band together is wonderful, I love his music. But he is most certainly not the best.
