Jesus, am I the only one that feels weak in the knees when I see the shots of the spiked shoes climbing up an utterly vertical face hundreds of feet above the ground? You must have to be completely unafraid of heights to handle this kind of climbing, especially since the vertical aspects are almost the ENTIRE climb!
until they grow up,for many people, if death had not been involved,,most of us wouldn't be involved, is the motto,,,,, as long as rescuers, are not at risk ,,,,go for it,,,ps you can get similiar thrills from russian roulette, lol
I understand the desire to see what no one has, but still, mountain climbing like this where your life is at risk is just that...a risk...one I could not ever imagine doing...I have a gross fear of heights in my older years....beautifully shot...wonder how they managed to do this while climbing.
@homie0187 well, i live in holland and i go to a tto school, that means i get subjects like geography and history and many more in english instead of dutch , just to improve my english, and a have an extra subject called ''english 2'' and than we always have to do this kind of stuff
Since I discovered this film I watched it quite a lot of times... the atmosphere is just so much "fun" when you watch it. You really "feel" like they "feel". The funny thing is, it took me time to realize that they attempted this when I was just born. :o
@zthomasack yes, he had to cut the rope. But there was a chance his friend could still be alive after the fall. Simon Yates decided to leave instead of checking his friend. In my opinion that as a terrible mistake.
@otavioandradas The way I look at it, Simon could have done nothing to help Joe even after seeing the body-print on top of the snow cap of the crevasse. There is simply no way that Simon could have -- even with Richard's help -- pulled Joe up from the crevasse, ensuring his safety. Simon and Joe both address this in the epilouge of the book Touching the Void. Ironically, if Simon had called out to Joe, Joe probably would have continued sitting there, ensuring his death.
@zthomasack I saw this film long ago and I don't remember all the explaining, but I wonder why Simon didn't look for help as soon as he got back to the tent. He assumed his friend was dead without any physical evidence.
@otavioandradas I recall that Simon thought it was useless; he just assumed Joe was dead because of the treacherous drop made worse by the fact that in normal circumstances the drop would not end just below the snowcap but rather hundreds of feet futher below. Unfortunately, not all individuals rely on phyisical evidence for their beliefs in events, unlike you and I ;-) I feel that if Simon had called out to Joe though, he would have laid back, confident, until his eventual death
great documentary, the book is complete arse imho...i seem to be the only living soul who can differentiate between a great story and a great writer, which Simpson is not
Without the truth, there can be no real morality, justice, equality, success, freedom, love, security, peace, spirituality or even survival. Search "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then open The Present and read what it says to learn the truth of life.
Yes this is one amazing film. Starts slowly and builds to a utterly gripping level that is as much about psychological as physical survival. Lingers in the memory like a Boney M track!
@LicensetoIL I hope you learn that every life is precious, and that climbers are people just like you, i don´t think i´m a retarded for loving rock climbing nor mountains, it´s just a life experience that it´s worthed, and i hope people like you could understand the conexions with yourself, with nature and with other HUMAN BEINGS beneath climbing
Let's see if it starts ringing in your head as well. Although this might not have been the very song that rang in Joe's head, maybe he didn't remember exactly or there were many or some other in actuality.
Those that have watched the movie, copy and paste the following to youtube search and listen Joe's favorite song. " Boney M. - Brown Girl In The Ring " - Pun intended but disrespect NOT. Brave man.

Probably the most frightening book I've ever read. Two people in the most desperate of situations make decisions that to me seem almost unthinkable. I have enough climbing experience to grasp what they faced and I don't think I'd have the guts to take the steps they did. A truly amazing story and told so well that it scared me silly.
@murleman Everest or "Chomolungma " may be the *biggest* but it is not the hardest or the most dangerous. Everest has a lower fatality rate than Siula Grande. The most dangerous (read: highest fatality rate) is Annapurna.
Does anybody know of any other similar survival stories? I just watched 127 Hours, the documentary about Aron Ralston and now this and I want to see some more
@NotToImply try Buried. basically a guy is buried alive with a few items like a mobile phone and a lighter and the whole film is set inside the coffin. reminded me more of phonebooth rather than 127 or Touching the Void but it is pretty good.
Thanks for posting this, I am sure it's gonna be great, if it is as good as the other Joe Simpson movie, the Beckoning Silence. That one was just amazing, did you see it?

... Jeden z najpiękniejszych filmów o silne, odwadze i niezwykle trudnych wyborach.
i just finished the whole thing, and i am amazed, and lost of words. i cant possibly praise the film enough, so i'm just gonna say its one of the few movies i consider buying on disc, even after i've seen it on youtube. thanks again for uploading, will definitely recommend it to my friends. actually i cant wait to see the behind the scenes feature, if they put such a thing on the dvd.
@brkdaice This story is simply amazing. One of the best I've ever seen, if not THE best. I can't recommend this film enough, it's an incredible story of endurance and the sheer will to live.
I bought the DVD awhile back but I still made a play list out of this. I consider it important to support any of the folks that have a real story to tell and tell that story so well by buying the book or DVD. Simpson has made a film about the Eiger haven't seen it yet..any info?

Option 1) Simon Yates doesn't cut the rope and they'll likely both die.
Option 2) Simon Yates cuts the rope; He is likely to survive but Joe Simpson s likely to die,
It's obvious that one should cut the rope in this sort of situation. In mountaineering, this would be the correct thing to do.
