Hicks and Kinison were on a see saw all the time, most of the time they were equal, then Hicks comes out with goatboy, rises above, then Kinison creates love song then rises above, they were both prophets, neither was better
Sam is right and so was Bill Hicks. They both died in the early '90s. They both knew that the good people that wanted to make a world a better place die young. Both of their lives and careers prove that. Makes you wonder.
I can never watch Bill Hicks again. I heard that Hicks copied him, but I never thought to this extent. Joke style, expressions, faces, sounds, body-postures, themes, everything is very similar to Bill's 80s comedy. Plus, Sam's funnier and not depressed.
@aaramon1 That whole reference if you were to see his other performances on the same joke it's actually "I have a hole in my head". The reason why he had to change it "head-wound" was due to the restrictions in lettermn show as it was being aired on t.v so for the sake of audiences, the joke had to be altered. Peace.
@aaramon1 That whole reference if you were to see his other performances on the same joke it's actually "I have a hole in my head". I was there and LIVED this , saw Sam rise, saw his genuis, he told the truth on many things. Can you believe we had 3 networks, and there were NETWORK CENCSORS sp just 25 years ago? How things have changed. Sam in the end did believe in Jesus, and I believe he is in heaven now. The world is a hard place to live in and he had alot of pressure on him, as many of us do now. Now that I'm divorced, his comedy is even funnier. Classic, 80's, onpoint, humor.
Why did so many gifted people die in the early 90s? this guy, Bill Hicks, Kurt Cobain & John Candy. When they go, they seem to go in job-lots like in the early seventies-Joplin, Hendrix, Blind Al Wilson, Morrison, Duane Allman.
You have to take into account that this was 85 and that he inspired so many comics. He was a true original and if you actually get beyond the screaming his content was true, biting, and most of all hilarious.
@desioreo87 I apologize for not thinking it's funny. I really owe you one, you poophead. If you listen, you'll notice people are mostly laughing when he starts screaming, which is a pathetic way to get laughs.
@Apocanaut you called me a poophead which i think is hilarious so all is forgiven. average people may laugh at the yelling but that was not why he was great.
@leshager2009 why does every angry comedian get referenceed back to Bill effin Hicks? he wasnt all that great, nuthin Sam and Denis Leary didnt do better imo....
He was right: anyone who tries to create a feeling of inspiration and empowerment in the common man is either assassinated or smeared out of office. Or like Clinton, who was smeared so he would always be associated with something negative. And now look at how the ruling class and its corporate media are running down Obama. Whereas someone like Bush or Reagan is never discredited or smeared-because they work only for the rich
The ruling class always win. It doesn't matter who is President.
Some 20 something year old punk said Richard Pryor was the funniest comedian ever and I said hell nah it was Sam Kinison and he said who? I wanted to kick is fuckin face in the punk ass bitch
Bill hicks, clearly took a lot of his style, the sardonic laughing at bitter jokes, the rock and roll screaming, the adjective litanies against people he doesn't like, the bit about shooting all our heroes, and reagan wounded. Bill hicks though read more noam chomsky and had a more direct and acerbic commentary on politics, religion, and culture, which is why he is often classified with lenny bruce and kinison is not.
maybe... i'm basing my opinion solely on this video of Sam... but it still makes me sad when this guy takes an actually REAL, wholehearted attempt, unobstructed by any low cause like money or fame, to help people and open their eyes, and he makes it into some screaming hack...makes me sad
It's hard to form an opinion of someone, based solely on one TV spot, whose act changed so significantly throughout the years. As far as the screaming hack part, he carried the screaming and yelling from his previous years as a Southern preacher. And which passed up opportunity of helping people are you referring to?
I'm talking about his bit about good people getting shot, and Regan being wounded. Especially if he was indeed like-minded with Bill, i don't see any reason why he should use the exact same line and not put his own spin on it.
And what the hell is a "Southern preacher" i must ask....
I don't know if it's the same exact line or not but a lot of people talked about the killing or injuries of political figures. As for the Southern preacher dilemma, it's mainly a style or type of preaching that a good portion of Southern preachers use. It involves the preacher or reverent getting worked up and vitriolic while they "spread the gospel". (The "spread the gospel" part was pun intended.)
No worries dude. It's a fucking good thing you're like that. It's a good point but they were just like-minded friends. Anybody who doesn't really know their history together would question the same exact thing you did.
Here's an example of Sam Kinison when he's high. I prefer his performances when he was on coke though because he brought a unique, exhilarating energy with him when he was high in contrast to his later, sober performances. I love his untouchable excitement he displayed each and every performance.
Hicks and kinison both knew each other very well and had similar outlooks on life, as did carlin, my three fave comics, i think any accusation of plagiarism is completely unfounded.

I was waiting for your Letterman-tall/Kinison-short comment, djb. You need to expand your power of observation, though.
From now on, you're going to notice how tall every talkshow host sits. It's safe to say that you will NEVER see a guest sitting taller than the host, no matter how tall either is. The host ALWAYS sits a little or a lot taller.
Johnny Carson pioneered this practice and it's held true for just about every host with that format.
"Shut up and take the beating!!! He had such a clever way with concepts and language(Not ALL of it foul)and was a true original in every sense of the word. The world is a quieter and less funny place without you in it Sam.
Just a head's up to whoever posted these videos: David Letterman never hosted the Tonight Show. You should change the description to say "Late Night".
It's actually Late Night With David Letterman, not the Tonight Show.

Why does this asshole Letterman need to sit a foot taller than his guests.....is he THAT insecure?
logansGT 3 years ago
Letterman is over 6' feet tall, and Kinison wasn't much more than 5'6". That's why he looks taller.

I really don't think this guy's that funny. He kind of annoyed me.

"Shut up and take the beating!!! He had such a clever way with concepts and language(Not ALL of it foul)and was a true original in every sense of the word. The world is a quieter and less funny place without you in it Sam.

LETTERMAN ALWAYS SUCKED.
This stand up wasn't taken in well by the crowd. Kinison is better when he is unscensored.

YAh, it was kind of expected being that carlin was in his 70's. This guy should have been doing his thing till the 2040's

Just a head's up to whoever posted these videos: David Letterman never hosted the Tonight Show. You should change the description to say "Late Night".
