  • good good good

  • The DD-2 or DD-3 (the same thing actually) is analog circuitry with a digital chip to process the signal instead of the BBD (Bucket Brigade Device) that all analog Delays used. The DM-2 BBD has 4096 Stages giving a max of 300ms. The IC in the DD-2 offers 800ms.

  • It seems the DD2 gives it a bit of a reverb along with the delay repeats. I used to have a PDS-2000 from Digitech, a long time ago. I used it with very short delay setting to use it almost like a reverb. Since now I have an Orange amp with built-in reverb, I could easily use an analog delay instead of digital. By the way, very good demo. : )

  • Thank you for taking the time to demonstrate these pedals. Really cool!

  • I like the way the Ibanez sounds...almost "smokey" sounding if that makes any sense.

  • yeah i think the digital one sounds not as warm as the analog delays. how much did you pay for the boss dm-2 ?

  • holy crap that fender twin purrs like a kitten

  • Dry tone starts at 1:25 , Ibanez AD9 starts at 1:50 , Boss DM-2 starts at 3:08 , and Boss DD-2 starts at 6:22.

Thanks for the video, it was very enlightening for me. =)

  • Less talk, better tuned guitar, and better matched settings and this would have been more helpful. Also, show each pedals maximum delay settings.

  • Less talk more rock

  • Very helpful. Thank you!

  • my dd-2 hums loads when i use a power supply. which one are you using?

  • The Ibanez is warmer as compared to the DM - 2. I kinda like the Ibanez more.

  • useless and boring

  • @minitel3615simon Thanks for wasting your time here!

  • how u powered ur pedals??? which power wupply did u use!

  • Very good demo! I'd go for the Boss DM2. The Ibanez re-issue seems to exhibit a lot more distortion at the same levels.

People seem to find that digital devices have a cold and lifeless sound. What it is really is absence of distortion, and perfect reproduction of the input signal. But our brain likes distortion, but not to the point of degrading the signal too much, just enough to be lively and organic. Constantly evolving sounds will always be more interesting and that's why analog is better.

  • canuck?

  • digital delay is the best!

  • Awesome demonstration. Well done, friend.

  • I think this is a great demo, thanks a lot mate! I remember the days when I had a DD-2 (or 3? lol). I agree with you about the Boss being more organic, it sounds very lovely to my ears.

  • 2 min to start hearing how it sounds the pedals

  • dd 2 delay resolution is low - makes it sound close to analog ! try the higher up dds , ( like the 5 ) and thats way to perfect repeats. DD2 is sweeeeeet. Dm2 is flat , organic for sure, Ad9 soundeds like the repeats have a mid boost?

  • @andramelk115

Exactly. Of course the DD-2 isn't analog, but it's more 'organic' than the newer DD's and it's easy to mod, just like the DD-3 and the DSD-2.

  • Great video! I will just like to see the same demonstration with the MXR Carbon Copy Analog Delay. Great Job! Keep Rocking!!!

  • CALLING ALL TOM MORELLO FANS!!!

Tom uses the dd-2, if you wanna do a good cover of him. pm me if you want the whole list.

  • Super Delay has a lot of features, but that's a distraction for me- simpler is sometimes best and these guys sound superior to the Empress.

  • I use the DM-2 and DD-2 on my board, and they're both great. DM-2 is my favorite analog, and the DD-2 is the warmest digital I've ever found.

  • @rovibe

I no longer use any of the pedals in this video.

I've purchased a Empress Super Delay, I personally think its the best delay in pedal form, for analog (tape) sound and crystal clear digital delay sounds it has everything and more.

  • @rustycowbell I just wish it didn't digitize the entire dry signal and has the dry tone go thru A/D and D/A conversions, and I wish it didn't cost over $400.

  • @rustycowbell The Superdelay phase inverts your signal though

  • Thanks for the video. Having both types of echo/delay in your pedalboard is a good idea, as both sound very different. Now, digital delays have much more features than they did. The boss DD5, DD6, and DD7 for example have some great features. I like the warp mode on the DD6. You can make it sound like interesting volume pedal and the DD7 has the analog delay feature that suppose to sound like a DM-2.

  • dm2 sounds gorgeous

  • wtf you guys are crazy, analog delays kicks digital ass, the sound is clearer and its just analog = best, no fuzz, no unwanted sounds, the input sound = output sound quaiity on analog ones.

  • @Macky91SWE Analog is not clearer & the sound in is not the sound out. The sound degrades with each repeat. I've never had a digital delay that introduces any fuzz or unwanted sounds, analog on the other hand is known for that, it's one of the reasons people like them. Digital delays don't usually self oscillate when you jack up the dials like an analog. But most digital delays have multiple modes, usually with one that mimics tape, or analog, while an analog delay, really is a 1~2 trick pony.

  • You're lucky to get yourself the DD-2

  • DD2, very versitile.

  • In my opinion the Ibanez AD-9 has the most vibe. It's got that old school mid range thing happening. I am a little surprised that the new unit would be the one with the most color, but it is. It was cool to see the old school Boss pedals. The Boss DM-2 is also a really cool pedal.

  • @patrox247 I agree wholeheartedly with you about the Ibanez's tone. It's really got better tone and better clarity.

  • Here's a suggestion for ya............................

Play ONE note pattern of no more than 5 notes over no more than 2 seconds through all 3 pedals at once...................................................

then tweak the piss out of the pedals to see how long you can make the sound regenerate and how wide a variety of sounds you can get from the output result.

  • wut does it sound like if theyre all turned on?

  • like this 8:02

  • The Ibanez is a bit warmer than the DM-2, but the DM-2 I think has a more natural sound to it. I love the DM-2. I prefer digital over analog honestly... I like my repeats to overlap and stuff. The DD-2 has a real natural sound like the analog, but it's digital done right. Definitely one of the best delays I've ever played.

  • @jabestin As far as delays go, I love digital much more than analog as well; more delay time, and plus I'm not so into the somewhat obnoxious gritty repeats of analog or self oscillation. Analogs are great if you're into trippy Pink Floyd stuff or play in a reggae band, but since i play hard rock/heavy metal, I need delays to be non-intrusive and clean

  • @RNRDOLL yea def. I agree. It's a vintage kinda sound that matches music of it's day. Using it now isn't the same. With all the possibilities out there and stuff. forget it. If Digital delays were around back in the day, those dudes would've used it and music would be in a different place than it is now because of it. It's all about growth. They had their time with analog stuff.. and now we enjoy the digital stuff and make new sounds toward the future. Lol.

  • ad-9 rocks

  • The type of analog delay that the DD-2 is referred to sound like is tape delay. Not the analog circuit. It has a lower bit ratio than the successive delay pedals which adds a mild VERY MILD distortion like a tape delay unit would provide.

  • analog sounds like the repeats want to be heard more and they sound very close to the mix while the dd-2 sounded more open and spacey

  • nice riff at 3:02

  • DM-2 has the better attack and clarity but I enjoyed AD-9 most 'cause it has a kind of compression feeling that atracts me more. DD-2? the looser here. what about to post a mod DD-2...

  • @samguitarman No it's the other way around. The AD-9 has more clarity.

  • Dm 2

  • Nice review - but maybe invest in a TU-2? Haha. Cheers

  • maybe i have fucked up taste but the AD9 sounded awesome to me.

  • @PopExpo Well it depends on what you play really. You'd have shitty taste if you played mostly rock or anything heavy and decided to get an analog delay with anything less than 5 or 600ms. You'd end up feeling stuck, just shy of having enough delay for songs in a faster tempo. Or bad taste like strict blues guys who buy the Ibanez SD9 or SM9..those pedals are WAY more than they'd need or actually make use of.

THAT'd be bad taste; buying gear that doesn't at all suit your immediate needs

  • @PopExpo I liked it a lot better than the DM-2.

  • DM2 wins for analog..DD2 wins for digital!

  • can the Dm-2 reach the same speed/intensity as an Dm-1??

  • DM-2 wins hands down

  • The reissue AD-9's are crap, this would have been a much better comparison with an original AD-9.

  • @partywithbonscott Sure they are mate, we all heard how crap it sounded didn't we. {rolls eyes}

  • wow thank you...i've been stressing over which delay i wanted to get and this clears everything up...can you make more? I know pedals can be expensive but it's a cool hobby haha.

  • Nope...2 analog delays (red ones)

    1 digital delay (white one)

  • You're right on point, the DM2 has a much more warm sound. The DD2 sounds too bright and very synthetic. The Ibanez just doesn't sound very good, a little too compressed. DM2 is the best of the three by a mile.

  • maybe, but the DD2 wins for me just for being so versitile. if it sounds too bright, put it through an EQ pedal and turn down the tops for fucks sake :)

  • dd-2 all the way .....the best

  • Great review! You discovered something that most people don't realize about analog delays. I have Ibanez AD9 RI and you completely right. This very obvious if you put delay before TS9 into an dirty amp. You just can't do justice to those Mad Season/Mike McCready sounds.

  • Thanks for posting!

  • the dm-2 sounds incredibly warm to me. however, for my needs i prefer the dd-2

  • im building a pedal board and i need to know what would be better, digital delay or analog delay.

  • tell me which type of music you play and some of the band names, and I'll try to help^^

  • alot of classic rock and hard rock.i want a digital pedal with versatility also.

  • hmm, and do you mostly play classic or hard rock, because classic is more analog delay and hard rock mostly is digital.

Tell me something, do you play with tubeamps or solidstates?

That's important for the sound too

  • as of now im playing through a solidstate mg50 but in the next few weeks il be picking up a orange rockerverb 50.

  • It seems that the analog would better then, since

    1) it is superior

    2) it sounds even better with tubeamps.

If you like Pink Floyd, or most of the other 70 bands, analog would be your thing!

If you like 80's more, maybe you'd like the digitals better.

  • thanks for the help dude!

  • analog delays mainly produce warm sounds and thats what makes analog so desirable however if you want something that alows yo to be more creative get a dd 7. hendrix used a lot of reverse guitar sounds on electric ladyland, this had to be done by reversing the tape, the dd7 does this for you and also has an analog mode too

  • which one is your favorite? the dm-2 sounds great.

  • Well the one that seems to stay on my board the most from these is the Boss DD2. I like to keep my pedal board simple and don't have 2 of the same type of effect. Also depends on the type of music I'm playing, so I switch from time to time.

  • Are you on the HCFX forums?

  • nope

  • What's the difference between analog and digital delay?

  • one is analog and the other is digital :)

  • Wich means? :P

  • Digital Delay and Analog Delay are completely diferent Effects. Digital Delays are designed to give you exact and pristine repeats all over the delay time without signal alteration. In the other hand, the Analog delay repeats are not exactly as the main signal. Analog delay times are shroter and Digitl are longer.

    Think:

    Digital Delay: The Edge

    Analog Delay: David Gilmour

    Your choice!!

  • good demo but at the same time i'd have to agree with noviembre12... u should never compare digital and analog delay, it would be like coparing tape echo to a sweep echo delay... it's just not proper.

  • in the early 1980s the Edge used a memory man, which is analog.

  • nope, never recorded with it, in fact he recroded and played with the Boss DD2 in 1984. Sorry but you seem to have your pedals mixed up mister

  • maybe ur right...but i went to one of their early concerts and he was using a memory man. he used it live, maybe not for recording (?)

  • good point. perhaps!

  • Its just so people get a sense of the difference, many kids get analog delays but they really want a digital one.

Analog delays are darker sounding and generally have shorter delay times, digital delays can give you longer and clear crisp sounds.

It also depends on the amp your playing through, I have a Marshall JMP and I prefer my Boss DD2 Digital delay through it rather then one of my Analog delays.

Its a matter of taste really, so try before you buy people!!! :)

  • I need a delay that will give me infinite delay cycles. I want to be able to do something on it walk out of the room and come back like 2 hours later and it's still going just like I left it. I want to try some voice effects with it. Any suggestions?

  • boss loop

  • Hmm...thanks. But it looks like a little more than I need.

  • Digitech Digi-Delay. It's exactly what you're looking for.

  • I've been looking at another one but I'll keep that in mind. Thanks.

  • boss giga delay

  • Thanks.

  • any delay with a hold or loop mode.

  • Ok.

  • yuck... stay away from twin pedals and multi-effect pedals. bad news is daunted by such as these :(

  • the dm2 is the best delay echo pedal !

  • all 3 sounds great to me :)

  • Great demo! I have a DD-2 and several analog delays (DMM, AD999) and agree that while the DD-2 sounds great, its nothing like an analog delay. Good to have choices though!

  • Good to see if you wanna buy pedals like me thanks

  • I have one of those DM-2's. Sweetest delay sound ever.

  • How much du they go for ?

  • I've seen the mint ones on E-bay go for as much as $350 USD with box and manual. The battered ones go for $250 - 300. But beware: most of them have had their trim pots played with destroying the pedal. You will read mixed reviews about the DM-2. They say that the DM-2 sounded funny and weak. That's because of the wrecked trim pots.

  • Awesome pedals! :)
