Judging by the sequence of events, the white man brought up spit-shining as a response to a previous talk regarding the purchase of shoes. The white man continued the conversation with the black businessman by asking how much he would charge to spit-shine his shoes for him, and the black man took it as a racis remark. Whether or not the intentions were racist, there was a misunderstanding on both sides that led to unnecessary violence which was influenced by Vietnam-War veteran-like instincts.
