  • Happened to me yesterday. I just took the top off re adjusted the ring and set to the proper torque seemed to work.

  • I had the same exact problem, but after a few drives, it didn't leak anymore.

  • I've serviced my 323i E46 with aftermarket filters since the day I bought the vehicle and without an issue. Looks more like the O ring wasn't lubricated before the oil filter cap was replaced causing it to rip or be un-seated. If your going to to a job, do it properly. Bad tradesmen always blame the tools.

  • Mann is OE

  • Use OEM parts.

  • I have two active codes in my 99 323i can somebody help me? P1188 and P1189

  • May simply have been the way the O-ring was installed. when you put it on it is possible to twist the O-ring when you put it on. The twist may have been the problem-not the "after-market" issue.

  • I change mine with a bosh Preimun ($15) on a E60 no problems.

  • I get aftermarket all the time for that stuff, never had that happen.. Could have just been a badly made O ring. That happens to OEM parts as well.

  • maybe you haven't tightened it to the correct torque setting????

  • You dont have the O ring in the proper postion. The Oring needs to be installed in the groove which is about .25 inches below the cap.

  • its just you

  • Laugh at 0:23 sounds like Peter Griffin from Family Guy!

Thanks for the headsup, one to watch out for at my next service.

  • Great video euroautosport!

have you seen diybmw com ? It's a BMW DIY SEARCH ENGINE!!

  • I have used a several different oil filters they all came with Orings. I have never had a problem. Perhaps the cap is bad.

  • did you put it all the way down and made sure it didnt rip by the way did you get that fixed

  • I've been using aftermarket oil filters in my e36 328i since I bought it two years ago...You just have to make sure seat the O-ring properly! 175,000 no leaks whatsoever...

  • I'm having the same issue now. I've never used anything but Mobil 1 filters in my e36. I just got done changing my oil and all the local stores were out of Mobile filters so I tried a Bosch and Wick. Both leaked. I hope its not my housing. I ended up just having to order a filter. I didn't know it could make such a difference. I'll probably get OEM from now on.

  • yep same thing with my bros VW toureg. You have to go OEM or they dont fit right!

  • it could be that it was put on in the wrong groove.

  • That's why I only use Mann oil filters. They're pretty reliable.

  • Does MannFilter presents this problem?

  • This happened to me with a genuine BMW filter and o ring... the only way to prevent the o ring from popping out was to encase the o ring area within a large worm drive clip.

  • Bad o-ring? Not likely. It probably got torn as you were screwing down the cap. Use a little oil on the o-ring and the lip it meets before you tighten it down.

  • how do i remove the cover from the oil filter..i tried with a 36 key but its not coming out..can u tell me what did u use for it?thanks

  • bullshit! i have ALWAYS used non OEM oilfilters, and NEVER had an oilleakage

  • Hi! I have a bmw 330i 2001 and recently i had done the oil change on it...the problem is engine oil was leaking a little (5-6 drops a day) thought it might not leak after a oil change...it needed oil change anyway, it still leaks the same amount...oil filter cap was tightend properly 18mm lb. feet...my mechanic has checked everything but they can't feagure out when is it leaking from...any help would be appriciated pls. Thanks in advance

  • That's why I only buy Mahle, Mann or Genuine BMW filters.

  • 3 possible causes: bad o-ring placement & not lubricated with clean oil, over or under tightened, use 27nm, cross treaded filter housing.

i prefer brand name parts too, but customers hae often supplied oem, never seen any of them leak like this.

  • thats the problem if you dont use original parts...

im bmw mechanicer for a few years, and i can tell u, we had only this type of problems if cheap shit was used by any person thinking hes mechanicer....

    use original parts, serious!

(sorry for my english, im from switzerland)

  • Expensive drops out :)

  • Thats a bad O-ring.. or wrong installed o-ring..

  • I bought my filters both from the cheap ones and the expensive ones never had this problem.

  • hey my car just started having the same problem. Do I have to buy a new O Ring from the bmw dealer ?

  • Pretty lame if your car can't take an aftermarket oil filter like any other car can.

  • its just cheap customers that think they are saving 10 bucks but in the long run just take it to the dealership.

  • Looks like a manufacturing defect on that particular o-ring. 99% of aftermarket o-rings don't leak like that. I agree that OEM filters should be used but not because of the o-ring.

  • An oil change isn't that expensive. Why do people buy BMWs and cheap out on a oil change?

  • imitation is good matriaal ! i think you places the o-ring at wrong place.

i think you placed the ring on the first level but it has to be on the second

if you dont understand i will send you a picture

  • I think you pleace the o ring at the wrong place.

i cant put a picture her so i put it on this website

    speurmachine.nl/oil-filter-bmw

    better luck next time

  • Could be they overtightened the cover forcing the o-ring out.I believe its 18 ft.lbs.

  • have the same problem in a 3 series.

  • It's easy to place that o-ring in there wrong ...

  • 1 comment for that many views? somebody refreshed the page a lil to many times

  • I use aftermarket filters all the time on my e46. this is either a problem with bad installation or didnt place or properly place the O - ring that comes with all filters. Look at that oil seeep WOW!

  • Or the person didnt change the o-ring or didnt lube it and torn or pinched it putting it on.

  • omg, my ass is bleading!!!(c) =)

+1 for an o-ring, maybe apply more pressure?

  • MAY BE OVER TIGHT AND THE RING GOT PINCHED

  • As said it's on o-ring problem, when replacing the oil filter always renew the o-ring as found of the cartridge type of filters, all the filters i've brought have all come with a new ring, and they have all been german aftermarket filters like marhl, mann or hengst all of which are OEM suppliers to vw / bmw / porsche etc

  • this is because A. theres no o-ring intsalled or B. you didnt put one in. Seriously? trying to blame it on the o-ring? lol at you sir

  • So what type of oil filter was it? "Aftermarket" is not a brand name.

  • is it tight enough??!

  • and did u do then? i have to change it too, but i am afraid of problems, cause i never have done it. And i wont spend 100 bucks to change an oilfilter.

  • I bought 5 MANN filters with O ring and washer kits. Had 2 bad O rings one which leaked like that one, The other would kept creeping up the top of the filter assmbly as you tightened it down, like it was too big. The 3 others fit fine and had no issues.

  • must not have lubed the new o ring or they didnt replace it at all.

  • then buy a new o ring -.-' why you showing us you dont know what to do lol

  • I just bought a e36 m3 99, wht problems should I address now before it's to late

  • Only use Hengst, Mann, Mahle in my E39.

  • What brand of filter did u put in? I'll make sure to avoid that brand lol...

  • dont blame the filter....

  • What brand was the filter?

  • tighten it more you weakling lol

  • so whats the fix

  • You either didn't use the o ring or didn't place it properly.

  • looks like a Loony Lube problem. often see them NOT change the O ring. see my video on them

  • yes it is the o ring. try replacing the gasket that is included with the new oil filter everytime you change out your oild filter and surely it will prevent this leaking canister.

  • The problem is not the filter, it's the seal around the filter cap.

If you neglect to replace it every oil change it'll swell and leak, if you dont rub the new seal with oil before you tighten it, you risk tearing the seal and it'll leak.

I'm a BMW technician ab=nd I've never seen a leak due to the filter itself.

If I'm wrong, please forgive me, but explain the cause so I can understand.

    Thanks.

    Alex.

  • Sometimes this happens when they put the new o-ring and forget to take the oldone out!! sometimes its hard to see the old one just looks like tread of the cover!!

  • You Noob did you even install the O ring?

    No you did NOT.

  • ...so what brand filter was it????

  • put some silicone on the screw...problem fixed

  • my $10 stp filter and o ring worked like charm. 525i '02

  • try to get a genuine filter , i had this problem with my 740i , bad filter will couse serous problems to ur bimmer

  • what kind of filter did you use?

  • You probably didn't get it on tight enough. I always use FRAM, for my oil change never had a leak what so ever.

  • It was probably a fucked bmw OEM filter to start with so he replaced it with anafterwarket one, or he ought the cheap aftermarket one was better than OEM or he bought an expensive aftermarket filter and got screwed...

Could be any reason :D But ye no need to modify a bmw... well... depends :D

  • is the torque setting not really high, i mean that looks like a 34mm nut?

  • doesn't look like a filter problem. it looks like a bad o-ring

  • Yeah, but the O-ring came with the aftermarket filter.

  • get a new one =\

  • it happend to me

  • @euroautospot Or the owner of the Vehicle thought that the O Ring didn't look too bad and stuck it on.

  • @euroautospot

    duds happen bro.

  • @euroautospot I think you didn't place the o-ring correctly. There is a certain way to install it. Most people install it at the very top of the oil filter housing. That's wrong. Watch the video below and you'll see what I am talking about

    youtube.com/watch?v=StWae8JBKaY

  • @euroautospot remember, the O-ring has to be in the O-ring groove. I made the mistake of putting the O-ring on but not in the proper position and had the same result as your video. This video is a year old, so for the people who have this problem just make sure the O-ring is in the O-ring Groove... good luck.

  • @euroautospot why would you need a after market filter?, is your oil filter really robbing you of that much performance lol

  • @tngolfer - definitely a bad o-ring. get one from bmw for 2 dollars

  • @tngolfer I think you pleace the o ring at the wrong place.

i cant put a picture her so i put it on this website

    speurmachine.nl/oil-filter-bmw

    better luck next time

  • the o-ring is not placed correctly

  • o-ring?

  • the o-ring should not be placed there!!!!!!!

  • Did you forget the O-Ring?

  • looks more like an bad gasket and not a bad filter.
