Deadlifting with the handles turned up makes the lift easier b/c you don't reach down as far, so you don't move the weight as far. Try it with the handles turned down.
@elgilicious - you've got it backwards....the low handles make it harder for increased range of motion. We use both options depending on mobility and progress.
