Laura had gone into a catatonic state when she thought she had killed her stepfather. Luke was told that it was a permanent condition. He did not marry Tracy out of love, but rather to get money from her in a scam. They stuck it out - Tracy fell in love with him, and much to my dismay, he her. Not the kind of love he had with Laura however. So when she came out of catatonia temporarily, he didn't divorce Tracy which broke my heart. He grieved terribly when Laura reverted to her catatonia.
