try to perform it with regular ( drumset ) toms !
And use powerstroke skins . your problem may be sold that way . mine was .
don't muffle the skins . I believe the whole character depends on that ( except from good tempo and clean 4:3 - 3:4 - 6:5 e.t.c. ) Good job by the way . keep it up man .
Well, performing it at a University I was mildly limited to the drums the university has, and wasn't ready to drop money on heads for drums that aren't mine. They're all coated heads, and a mix of remo and evans but just diplomats and generas, nothing fancy. The muffling wasn't a atheistic choice, in that hall playing with the drums open would have created a wash of sound where rhythm would have been unintelligible, no matter what the heads.
I just posted this version of Rebonds a on my facebook with a link. I am doing this piece as well right now, and can only hope that by the time I have my senior recital it can be this good.
due to the acoustics of the hall, it was necessary to dampen all the drums. That bass drum was the best sounding small bass drum I had access to, and a larger drum would sound somewhat hollow and unappealing when dampened, so i opted to use a large (i think it was 16 inches) low tuned and muffled tom-tom in lieu of a second bass drum. So rhythmic clarity in my performance setting was the primary reason, but I also like that it gave a more unified timbre to the set-up, making it more scalar.
This is really great, Nicholas!
