Dave, would you happen to know where I might be able to find one of those engines for really cheap. It doesn't even have to work. All I'm looking for are the main bearing caps since mine were totally screwed
@1717BY I have the (factory) turbo version of this exact engine sitting in my shed right now. It's the same block for both. Also, in case you were wondering, these were before VW's TDI line, which started in late 1995
@1320carlover 2 of his sons have been kidnapped by their crazy mothers, but adam still maintains a fine relationship with dave, as adam's mom is smarter than the others and knows how to raise a child
Simple question. The relay to my glow plugs broke a couple of weeks ago so I have just removed it. Now its currently winter and I know that if I can rotate the engine enough it will heat the cylinders and therefore start. Do you think I could be doing any damage to the engine doing this?, I really think its not a problem other than perhaps burning out the starter earlier or killing the battery quicker.
What maintenance is required to keep it in shape? Any modification on mounting and proper workings? Also what rpm does it idle at? I'm considering getting a motor of this stature and putting it in a custom car or dune type vehicle.
Nice to find a repair video that I've never seen before. Why do you need a bottle to hold fuel that is "coming out"? Where does that fuel in the second bottle come from? Why not just one fuel bottle?
@Davidsfarmlives Thanks for your reply. I find it amazing that modern fuel pumps (evidently gas and diesel) use fuel to cool the body of the pump, rather than something more complicated.
@spelunkerd They also use the backpressure provided by closed injectors/regulators to prevent the armature from rattling around and damaging bushings. If you run a pump dry the A/F ratio in the pump can be ignited by sparking inside the armature.
@Davidsfarmlives I found a torrent with all of the old videos and from his vlog channel Idk if you are aware of it being on there or not cause you can upload all of the old videos
These videos are like attending the David Rock academy for Mechanical and Chemical engineering. It's no wonder why Dave was the #1 most watched automotive channel. He still rocks!
those VW 020 transmissions are a mystery, some have the diff come apart in less than 100,000 km while others have damn near a million km's on them (especially the diesel cars) and still work fine.
Every vehicle has its bad models now and again. I'm a Chevy guy, and I knew of this one fellow who had a 1993 Suburban that, in 300,000 miles, went through three engines and four transmissions. Never saw another Chevy, 1993 Suburban or otherwise, with that kind of bad luck. Usually one engine will last you that long unless you just beat the heck out of it all the time.
i always loved this video the stones in the back ground "start me up" playing how fitting. this video just shows somthing some people have never seen before a running motor on a chain
Free DIESEL Jetta, free 3 free Cheviacs, a free '76 New Yorker, a free '67 Cadillac, and numerous other free cars I presume. Dave no wonder you have a hater club lol. Besides the fact that you were making all that money on your old channel. I would've absolutely loved to have any of those cars.
these vids remind me of the davesfarm like 4 years ago, the best .Dave,i know it takes time but dont forget fixing vids of weedwackers and small engines. they were great and extremely informative!
Those old VW diesels keep going forever. Toyota diesels from the same era are also almost indestructable too, when I was in Ireland I was in a diesel toyota taxi that had nearly 700.000 miles on the clock.
@backyardjay My bad just kind of looked like one for a moment i am used to working on rear wheel drive vehicles and 4wheel drive vehicles never really pulled a motor or anything on a front wheel drive
@Luna7ick Not at all, diesel engines run just like gasoline engines, they are CI (compression ignition) engines, the pressure in the combustion chamber reaches at least 700PSI depending on bore, stroke, compression ratio, and other variables like piston head design, carbon particles... etc. Also, mechanically controlled (via cam lobes) fuel injection was used on most diesels for years. The block is engineered to take the kind of pressures required for diesel combustion.
Works like a charm! I had hell with my 3 cylinder diesel mower when the ignition switch stopped working while it was running. Nothing can kill a diesel, especially with MECHANICAL fuel injector. Eventually we killed it by taking the intake hose off, and putting my hand on the intake. Quite the hickey I had after. The vacuum that it could run in is amazing!
So the wire you disconnected was for the glow plug to kill it? I thought diesels only needed the glow plug to start. I don't know much about diesels so im probably wrong.
@w1ldyovvnz If you look closely there is two wires. One is for the glowplugs and the other one is for the fuel cut off solenoid witch Dave pulled the cabel to stop the engine.
@KennayLee this video was taken BEFORE he put it in the White van. then Time and Rust took their toll, and he transferred the engine to his Blue 1995 Caravan.
