Hero editor is fun and all, but you're not modding D2, really...try extracting the .txt files from the .mpqs and using an excel program to edit them...then put them in Diablo II\data\global\excel and run the game in -direct -txt mode. That's how you really mod D2 in a nutshell, though you'll need some other files and programs as well.

Diablo II runs fine in Vista. To run it in fullscreen mode turn on "Disable Desktop Composition" and also run it in compatibility mode for windows XP so that you can use the mouse wheel.
