@gaconnichie & @Thisnameistaken11 To continue my rant - instead of pontificating I challenge you to come up with a shred of evidence. Pretty much every scholar for the last 200 years would agree this is from Burn's hand: because of the quality and style of the poetry, the consistency of the argument, the modernity of the ideas - and their closeness to Burn's ideas, and the fact that it's radially different from all other known version. If you know better, make a name for yourself and prove it!
@gaconnichie & @Thisnameistaken11 For some reason there are people who wander all over YouTube attempting to "prove" that Burns never wrote any of his hundreds of songs. Yes, he collected songs. But many of them he wrote, taking just a line or two from the tradition. And most others he reworked extensively. This is one that he wrote, in around Aug 1784. All other known versions of this song are bawdy. If you know anything about Burns and Scots song can see his hand in every verse.
marys just amazing shes everytin i aspire to be what an incredible women shes a heart if gold, and so down to earth,.. shes irelands culture and legend not just here but around the world!!!xX
Not true - this is Burns' version of an old song. His writing of this is well documented, and it has his style all over it. The older versions of the song are very different.
It's still not his song. Artists who cover songs by other artists often rework the song and put their own spin on it. That doesn't mean they wrote the song.
@tullochgorum Surely it is not even a Burns version of an old song. Having one line of lyric out of another song doesn't make it a rewrite. It just means you've built a new song out of an idea got from another one :- or perhaps you've unintentionally written a song with one line of lyric similar to another one-)
Went to see Mary a few year ago in Belfast with my girl friend, we were a few minutes late and she stopped the whole song till we were sat down and comfortable, no joke. Special singer, beautiful song.
"If ye're so grave ye sneer at this, ye're not but sensless asses, oh. The wisest man the world ere saw, he dearly loved the lassies, oh." Not sure why they left that verse out. Perhaps they felt it might not be appropriate for the audience, but Robert Burns included it, so hate that they left it out. Other than that, a most excellent rendition of this fine song.
I have Burns' alternate version to this song. Trust me...the verses are much worse...lol! I'd love to hear mary black sing that one. I don't think Burns thought much of those who play it tastefully.
I just watched again, gourdonboy. I swear I cannot hear that verse. But the video is somehow corrupted in the last two minutes or so. So perhaps I am wrong. But I listened very carefully and did not hear it.
It is a moot point. It is still a beautiful rendention of the wonderful song. The young lady does it justice.
I think the problem is that she mixes two verses together by mistake. The second part of the verse at 1:48 is "The wisest man...". I think that's why she laughs.
Just noticed that ( at your prompting ) and I think you are exactly right. Heh, it distracted her and she looked at the next verse instead of the one she was on. Nice catch, gourdonboy. Still was beautiful, though.
Besides, I love the fact that the gentleman ( I assume he is her husband ) wanted everyone to know that she was his dearie-o and he hers. I'll take that anytime.
This a clearly an informal unrehearsed performance by a bunch of great musicians having a little fun. Maybe an encore, maybe a request, who knows? She was willing to take the risk. She deserves respect for that! It doesn't have to be perfect to be beautiful. Lovely!!
This song is "Green Grow the Rashes O" written by Robert Burns. She is a great singer but the word rushes is wrong. There is another song but different words entitled "Green Grow the Rushes O"
Ainekenaz, I would have thought that she does not know the words, personally I don't see a problem with that. It was probably a late decision to sing.
Thanks so much Mary. Ceol den scoth.

@Winterlightshadow It's an old folk song. He didn't compose it; he just put it down in writing.

Mary Black is one of my favourite singers on the planet, but my favourite version of this is Michael Marra. Could be Burns himself.

Rikki. Actually, when he put his arm around her she lost her place and jumped the second part of the verse to the second part of the one after.

Heh, well it's pretty darned close to perfect, except for the verse they left out which I have already commented on. Beautifully done.

big fan of Mary Black, however why is she reading the words?
Gone well down in my estimation.

And Mairead doesn't need the lyrics to Green Grow the rushes, of all songs.
