Have you coded those splatter effects yourself? I mean those decals, like that blood in 1:47

I can't really figure out how are those made, how can you make decal, that will wrap around the object that it hits?

I can only figure out how to make textured plane object for decals, but that only works on smooth base.

Can you explain bit what it does?(I don't need example or code, just the theory behind that :) )
