To this day, FEMA does what it normally does after a disaster. It waits to see what the local government agencies ask for and then rights checks. Katrina was different in that the local agencies didnt know what to do and didnt ask the federal government for help.

If the feds had taken over the situation without prior approval by the state governors the fed would have broken the law.

I was stationed at the Navy Seabee base there before Katrina. I was there less than 2 years ago. Man, I couldn't believe the destruction. The 22mile stretch of beach was devastated almost everything gone including those beautiful homes. I gave the cab driver a 20dollar tip trying to help someone. to this day, katrina and rita victims in new orleans and the gulf coast remain neglected and figuratively raped by politicians from top to bottom. i envy mississippi because at least it seems they have some people working on their cause and getting results. we, unfortunately are stuck with nagin and blanco...total incompetence.

The "Go F*** Yourself" comment was friggin' hilarious. However, the damage that Katrina left and the refusal of the Bush administration to fully understand it and recognize it was not. I live in Grenada, MS, which fortunately only got wind and some rain from the storm. But I have friends that lived in the Gulfport/Biloxi area who lost everything and STILL haven't recovered from this. My thoughts and prayers are with the Gulf Coast areas hit by Katrina. God Bless you ALL.
