seems like todays was stronger. it knocked ice off a glacier 146 miles away. I think 30 trillion tons of ice. weird. please if anyone thinks it was stronger reply. It seems to us here in the us like the media is lying about the magnitude. May god bless you alll
The magnitude of the quake was not as large as September's but it was much shallower ie much closer to the surface therefore more of the energy of the quake makes it to the surface and it can be far more vigorous and violent. I'm no seismologist, but that's my understanding of the situation.
@vintagelifelover hey i live in Sydenham Chch, thats only 5-7minutes away from CBD and i live with my own family and partner with my two little girls under 2yrs old, my oldest (2) is terrified at every little shake, but yes the 6.3 quake was definatly way stronger, more violent, more destructive, its brought a massive loss to Chch and families through-out,i myself have a 2 story home and refuse to sleep upstairs,we all sleep in the lounge room now
@taylahx0x I hit the door on my way down so when i woke up the first hing i said was :was there really an earthquake then (slightly Bewilderd) my head hurts
when i woke up and the whole room was shaking i actually thought it was a poltergeist (being the crazy that i am lol) .. till i looked out the window anyway
@brayden0601 They might be security lights which go on when they sense movement. They are commonly used. And as we know, pretty much every alarm that existed went off after the quake. A little movement was definately sensed!!!
@2MinnieMouse No they where Definitely the main lights, you can see the reflection of them on the floor all turning on. Dont get me wrong i know there was a huge quake, i even felt it here in new plymouth, but as i have seen in a few of christchurch earthquake vids all the stores lights seem to turn on just before the power goes out......HOW DOES THAT HAPPEN!????
@brayden0601 It happens because all the lights on the ceiling the main lights can be sensored. That means that when someone walks in, the lights go on or in this case movement. I had them in school. If you sat still too long you would wave your arms and the lights would go on again. This seems to be what happens here so it seems like the lights are sensored for security. (so if a burgler breaks in the lights all go on). Then the power goes out and they obviously flicker.
@smithcd Sadly, the new earthquake (6.1 Aftershock yesterday) Caused many people to die and many buildings to collapse. I was in CHCH at the time of the earthquake and to be honest, that was the most terrifying thing ever. Oh god... 200-400 deaths...
@Crystalius11 your preaching to the choir mate, i live 3kms from the cbd! my parents workplace was moved to the 4th floor of the ctv building after the boxing day quake... Christchurch is never going to be the same..
It was completel;y freaky the way the building felt as if it were communicating with you, i could feel the top of the 12 storey building swaying wildly =\
Thank God it happened in the wee hours of the AM... I was planning on going out to the mall that day. Imagine what could have happened if it struck in the evening instead?
After the power went out, all we could think of was "dammit, i want a cuppa." even the neighbour on the back unit said that lol! i bought a gas burner after that, but when i got home, power was back on. thank god.
RIght, just saw the info at the end. I was in bed when it happened, was scared shitless. Didn't comprehend the severity of the situation after it happened but after hearing the news, I was more than freaked out. Then the aftershakes keep coming, Aaah!
yep,me and my family have lived threw all chch earthquakes/aftershocks like this and its not fun
