the rings have nothing to do with the way it sounds....

try slapping with rings on...they will actually mute the harmonic and make it sound the same as if you were to bang the strings with a metal pipe....

you will notice that when Erik Mongrain lap taps he actually takes his ring off as so they dont interfere with his harmonics.....

Personally I take off my rings before playing, I really don't recommend hitting harmonics with a ring on, usually the effect on the sound is not too positive :)

I don't think those rings do anything for his playing - I'm pretty sure he understood the question, but only half-jokingly said yes. You can bring out those harmonics just as well without a wedding ring!  However, some players such as Don Ross sometimes use a ring on thier fretting hand to slap the neck with at times.

A ring COULD theoretically make slap harmonics easier to do, if you're able to hit the string at precisely the right angle. However, it isn't necessary to use rings in slap harmonics; and as Craig D'Andrea points out, neck scratches/damage is a probability when wearing rings while playing the guitar, not to mention body damage (i.e., used in conjunction with percussive guitar, slapping and/or drumming on the body, etc.), and a certain measure of precaution is strongly advised.

I think those rings really help him with the harmonics. Play them yourself with and without ring, but be carefull. They can bring damage to the guitar.

You're wrong, the rings are actually his wedding and engagement rings. They do not help him in any way with harmonics. The slap sound at the beginning is his nails on the wood. He doesn't wear rings on his left hand (normally) because they interfere with his fret work. He also doesn't speak English very well, so I doubt he fully understood what the guy was talking about in the video. I have talked personally with him about his rings, they're not for harmonics.

You are right, but he completely understood. He knows the joke. As for the english, he knows more than a highschooler kid would know. It's not a hard language skill. However, you could infact make special rings for wearing higher on your finger to make a better harmonic sound. It's hard to master, but with practice, it's nothing afterwords.

You're actually wrong about the rings, slap-harmonics are hit with the tip of the finger. No such special rings are made: rings worn higher or lower would interfere with the natural bending of the finger that creates correct hand shape for fingerstyle guitar. Please don't try to sound intelligent if you don't know what you're talking about.
