Xanadu is actually Shangdu, the ex summer capital of China during Kubla Khan's reign, the song is not fantasy but based on fact.
I visited Inner Mongolia and Shangdu a couple of years ago, it was so surreal stood in the city walls listeneing to this song on my iPhone whilst there. I did break my thirst on honeydew and drank the milk of paradise
@BKKMekong LUCKY! Im 14 but Rush doesn't ever come near me,
I was on the wiki for this song a few days ago and it said Neil wrote it after reading the poem Kubla Khan, which is a fictional garden created by Kubla Khan which grants immortality, Later the man realizes that immortality sucks, lol. You probably know a lot more about Rush then me but thats just what it says on Wiki.
But whatever its about, its still a really great, actually, my favorite Rush song!
I hope not. I do remember loads of people standing up and the stage announcer saying the band wouldn't come on until everyone sat down. That's why i nearly sat on his recorder. I also have the incomplete boot from this show. Ah the days of the Free Trade Hall, Umist and the Pheonix ? Oh and Coxs' Bar
I assume you mean Manchester UK? I went to this show. I still have my ticket stub as well. June 2nd 1977 . I remember sneaking in the stalls before the show and sat down on what i thought was a coat. The guy just stopped me cos underneath it was a very expensive looking tape machine. I wonder if this was the recording. Great gig and good times. Saw them the year after, twice on the Farewell to Kings tour. I may be wrong but Def Leppard support them on TFTK tour?

I was also at this concert, I was 17 and had been told about Rush by a friend. This concert blew my mind and set standards that groups nowadays struggle to match. Geddy and Alex wore white and there was a white rug on the stage where they did their stuff. Some will think this is dated, but it isn't. It's a classic, played at a time when rock music was raw and without compromise. Fantastic.
@skylarking19 : Oh man. That would be EPIC!! I would book my ticket back there in a heartbeat!! I have Rush fully loaded on my iPod whenever i'm in Thailand. I can't begin to describe what I felt while listening to "A passage to Bangkok" while sitting on the steps of the rolling train from Chiang Mai to Bangkok. It was absolutely surreal! I'm heading back to Thailand in Dec or sooner.. Let's hook up on Lanta or Lipe, sit on the beach with a bonfire, drink some Singha's and listen to RUSH!!
My older brother was at this concert - Free Trade Hall, Manchester.

I wasn't at the show, I was four years old.
But the amazing thing about Xanadu, to me, is that the guys recorded it in ONE TAKE. That blows me away.

Great quality! Would love to see them on tour this year, but I doubt they will come to my city Bangkok, even though they wrote a song about it! :-)
