Speaking of mutated cats, that actually happens in 'The Nest'. In that movie, it's mutant roaches. Any lifeform they kill assimilates the mutant roach DNA and gets reanimated as a part roach hybrid mutant zombie. One of the reanimated mutants is an "ex-cat." It was a cat that had been used as bait and was eaten by the roaches.
Oh, and the "general spider" was portrayed as male but should have been female since spiders are matriarchical. There ARE such things as colonial spider species.
Eh...that's not that big a bowl of popcorn. Also...this is just a review and the scene with the invaded house made me shudder! I consider myself a fan of scary movies, but I may just have to skip this one. I'll be imagining spiders under my bed covers for weeks.
@Bluesit32 i know how you feel... i was subjected to this movie as a child and since then ive never been the same with any sort of spider.. even daddy long legs creep me the fuck out...
Hey the grumpy old doctor's bedspread is the same as mine when I was a kid! I actually live in an area with deadly venomous spiders, so I'm pretty blase about just seeing ones on the screen and get distracted by the background.
Right when my brother, his friend, and I finished watching this movie, some douche took a fake bug and threw it at us whilst the credits were rolling. The perpetrators have not been forgiven. Excellent review, as always.
This movie is a great invasion movie, cause bugs in general in a great number are just creepy, unless it is butterflies..though killer butterflies would be interesting..perhaps..
If you like bug movies, check out 'The Nest'. It's mutant roaches that turn anything they devour into a mutant roach-zombie. At the end, you get to see a multi-headed monstrosity which is one of the most inventive monsters of '80s flicks. It rips a woman's arm off then slowly bites the top of her head off with its mandibles. There's also a scene with a mutant cat. The cat gets eaten alive by roaches then comes back as a mutant roach-cat zombie.
Entertaining movie but 0% scientific fact. Spiders don't behave like ants. Some species have colonies but they're not led by a "general." Also, spiders are matriarchical, so if there is a "generalissimo," it would be female. The entomologist's apprentice reminds me of Curtis Craig from 'Phantasmagoria: A Puzzle of Flesh'.
@IggyHazard And female arachnids, specially spiders, are bigger than males (a glaring example: the black widows), and oftentimes will try to eat him if they could.
@Xerxes1688 The anglerfish is especially unusual. The female dwarfs the male and when they mate, the male's body becomes assimilated into the female's body!
@femmebot3000 Given how the spider moved I think it's safe to say the rod wasn't just for pushing it, it probably had the motor that articulated the legs like that. This movie was released in 1990 so having a working motor in something that small would have been difficult. Not a big deal, just thinking about why it might have been so big because otherwise there really isn't a reason.
Anyway, great movie, great review. This is always a hilight of the week when Shitcase comes out.
@Goldenkitten1 You're probably right (like you said, there must be a plausible reason for why that looked so bad!) but supposing the spider was not real, I still think it could have been propelled by more discreet means, such as remote control. Even cables could have been tucked away behind Daniel's leg or in a cut in his trouser. Personally, I reckon Frank Marshall was just getting lazy.
Sorry, I hated this Arachnophobia. There's a spider movie that I'd love for you to review -if you can find it. "Kingdom of the Spiders" Starring... Wait for it. Wait for it... WILLIAM SHATNER!!! Please review this movie. You know you want to. Who could possibly resist reviewing a movie where Captain Kirk, going by the name of, "Rack," (LOLZ!!) tries to save his little town from deadly tarantulas? Another reason to review it? THE SPIDERS WIN! Thanks for the upload.
I was hopeing youed do this film-i saw it when i was 4 and it it stuck in my mind as one of the greatisted films i could remember from my toadler years...10 years later i found it and i am increadibly aracnophobic yet i still love this film and love watching it...why anyone got any idear why i love watching this film if im sooooo arachnophobic, anyone im not even watching the review im listening to it because im too screard to put the screen up...sorry for the terrible spelling!
ive always been scared of the spiders. oddly enough though i watched this half a dozen ties when it came out and my phobia wasnt so bad.......Therapy :) - course now i piss my pants again
Funny, I didn't think this was a good movie at all. I would have expected you to trash it. Well, maybe you would like 8 legged freaks? I found that way more entertaining.
The spiders in this movie are incredibly common here in New Zealand (its where they got them from for the movie)...I fucking HATE seeing them coz they always remind e of this movie even if they are more or less harmless!
@powerrangerofdoom Generally spiders of all species are harmless unless provoked you could pretty much have a tarantula crawl on you and not get bitten once as long as you didn't give it a reason to feel threatened.
This movie is entertaining, but I'm a civil engineer, and when impossible things happen in film (like in this one when his fall breaks the solid wood flooring out all the way to the cellar-physically impossible to happen), it loses me a little.
@CLoWnnSkuLL Yeah, on top, but he was when he had that sick mullet he had. Mullets can have no hair on top so long as its òver the ears, down the neck, its fun as heck!
