Ok...he can stay on tune. Beyond that, it's just comical. If somebody told me that he was a comedian and that he was copying his drunk uncle singing at Christmas, I would be laughing my ass off.....Unfortunatley, he is completely serious...and completely bad.
@WonderWomanFan4life What happened to him is that his lack of a singing voice finally caught up with him. He lives on only in the archives of of IDOL and You Tube. I wouldn't accept a free ticket with parking and a limo to go see this stiff!
Never heard of this guy since. But really, I absolutely loved this performance. I remember this version when I sing the song in my head actually. That has to say something.
Elton John makes tragic anti-War songs I see. "Daniel" loses his sight in Viet Nam, leaves America for Spain.
In "Levon" the character has a proud "war wound" (following famiy patriotic beliefs") The war has begun and the people see so much bloodshed they find it hard to belive God is in charge. They feel abandoned by Him. Levon's son doesn't want to follow the traditon of war or business. Levon gets bored and unhappy carrying on with the family balloon business and symbolicly "dies"
@hotfudgemoney - "i don't really like the way he sung this at all" me niether, he countried up a good song. And "family values????" He must not have listened too hard to those lyrics. It's about a rich dad neglecting his kid cuz he cares to much about counting money in the garage and then there's the bit about "Jesus" wanting to fly away on a balloon and leave Levon far behind. I loved the part about "God is dead" though, that was the only reason I ever listened to the song.
oh wow... it starts out like a warped country song and turns into this poor dude just kinda flailing and struggling... this is the guy that won, right? good going, voters...
@raukoiel Perhaps, it's because a lot of older people saw themselves in him and were like "Yeah! Live your dream! Make it to the end!" I think he's rather cruddy myself.
More generally, it's about a son who decides to pursue his dreams and aspirations rather than move "in tradition with the family plan." It's a pretty pervasive subject in American culture, which is why "Levon" is such a timeless song. That said, I LOVED this performance by Taylor!
Ugggghhhh. Not awful, but unappealing to me. And TH is hard to watch. I LOVE the EJ original and I'm not even a big fan of his. Just a stone cold classic that cannot be matched. Especially without great harmonies.
Levon wears his war wound like a crown? That's right. What isn't right is this massacre of one of the greatest songs ever written. Someone needed to put a stop to this ten seconds in.
Well, that's because he changed the key on it. To me, part of the appeal of Levon is the crispness of the tenor vocals. Without the tenor vocals, it just doesn't have an EDGE....
To those who think Hicks has a "massive" range... dudes, there's a difference between singing tenor and singing falsetto. Any idiot can do and airy falsetto, but it takes skill to get it up in the high tenor registers and still make it sound full.
I admit though its my favourite song of all-time and if it's not short of an amazing perfomance I'll be a little more protective than usual. I *am* glad that the song has been resurrected and not forgotten, could also perhaps even be why EJ plays it so often live these days, who knows.

Okay, it's a good version, but (in my opinion) I don't think 'Levon' should be sung in a soul voice. If anything I'd go for a blues voice...a lot of Elton's early work was quite bluesy...Jon Bon Jovi's voice hit the nail on the head
hbknutjack --- lol , not exactly bro !! we dont just watch it for simon, we watch to see simon make grown men and women cry when thier told their pathetic and have no hope in hell , haha and thier like WHAT MY MOM THINKS IM THE BEST... lmao
There was something about that season of AI that seems to be missing from the show. I don't know if it was the friendship of the contestants, the talent that they found that season or a combination of it all combined but that was my favorite season.
btw..Taylor and Ryan at the end of this were so funny and adorable.
I agree. I don't watch much TV, at all, and I never watched American Idol much, either. But that season, I DID watch a lot of it. I've tried watching American Idol again- but it hasn't kept my attention like that season seemed to. There was something good about that season.
He's not trying to sound just like Elton John, so stop expecting him to. I actually thought he sang the intro smoother than the original. That song doesn't show off Taylor's abilities anyhow.
He only sang part of the song. The full song tells a story about a war veteran named Levon who was born in a troubled time. He has a mediocre job as a balloon salesman, but he saves as much as he can so he can send his son named Jesus to the best school he can, and yet Levon still wants him to carry on the family business, but Jesus wants to move away and experience the best he can out of life. This tears apart at Levon because he knows that he will never see his son again when he does leave.
I implore you to listen to Elton sing it in 1971 and you KNOW taylor can't compare. Yes, Elton DOES own it. Nothing against taylor but it's just not as good as EJ. Not as strong. I'm not a taylor fan but in his defense I'll say that it was fine, taylor is talented.
Was Simon also right when he said he was a very, very, good singer. When he said he was magic. Taylor is a very talented man. Whether or not he is ever the biggest seller, he will always be the most talented. And he would have sold a lot more if he had been supported and promoted like he should have been.
Love his voice and this night they couldn't seem to love him enough.
@kskaro668 I agree fully, although I don't think all the support and promotion in the world would have made Taylor all that marketable. Put bluntly, he was born in the wrong era. The famous singers these days sing pop and rap songs. Just look at any top 100 chart and see he sounds nothing like those artists. Taylor's soulful voice would have suited him well decades ago. He'll always have his loyal following who know talent from popularity, however.
I love that he said the song is about family values and it's about a boy that wants to escape his father "Jesus, he wants to go to Venus... leaving Levon far behind. Take a balloon and go sailing while Levon slowly dies." ...yeah good job, Tay.
He needs to go back to the karaoke bar. You gotta love the random finger snaps and constipated squating. What the hell is there to "Idolize"? People need to watch this and then the originator, Elton live in '71, for a reality check.

This was probably his best vocal. It was really good, but I hate when he squats like he's taking a dump. I'm surprised he didn't rip his pants out.
