I happen to know that this lady also thought the thing with the doll idiotic, but if you want to know the deep and meaningful symbolism associated with this act, I believe that the dropping of the doll signified Barbarina's loss of innocence. You mean vibrato? Well, considering that Barbarina is supposed to be only about 12 years old, (Anna Gottlieb, the original Barbarina, turned 12 on the day that "Figaro" opened in Vienna in 1786), too much vibrato would be inappropriate. Barbarina is a child.
I sang this in my grade five music exam :) I loved singing it so much and the examiner could tell. Thanks for posting
