  • can you send me the instructions on the green striped beanie for baby i get to round four and than you say stictch 2 single crochet than i don't underrstand what you say next. glbowtie@midco.net thank you

  • I hope it actually fits a new born baby.

  • Hi, My daughter's head is 16.5 inches and I want to make it alittle bit bigger than what you are making. I am done with all the rounds and I was wondering how I would do the increases. Would it be 1 SC in first 2 stitches, then 2 SC in 1 stitch and so one for 55 stitches? I don't know how to figure that part out!!! PLEASE HELP!! I have just started learning to crotchet 2 days ago! And I have watched this video a total of atleast 15 times already. Love your work!

  • This is so cute I'm def going to try this

  • Hello! Will this Beanie fit a child between 5 and 8 yr old? And can I add the earflaps also?

  • @LANENADETHOR This is for an approximate 14-16 inch head.

  • Hello, I was just wondering: how would you adapt this to fit a newborn?

  • @singingintherain1967 You will work less increase rounds and stitches

  • Hey Teresa! You're very helpful thank you! But my aunt is trying to make this beanie for her nephew except we both got stuck on round 5 do we do the same as round 2 I think where you put 2 sc in one and then 1 sc in the other 2?

  • Comment removed

  • hi teresa i made a v-stich ruffle cap and i was wondering if i can use the ruffle by doing 3 DC in each sc in the end ? do you think it would work?

  • @laffytaffylalala Yes, you can make a ruffle by working 3 DC in the same stitch.

  • ok, thanks I'll try that

  • Hi, the pattern is great, I just have a small issue...

I made this baby hat, and after the baby wore it a few times the bottom got streched out and now it's too big. How can I prevent this next time? Thank you

  • @sararapp1 This sounds like it may have more to do with the type of yarn you used. When you wash the cap, it should shape back up again.

  • Can you please tell the size of crochet hook you use in mm....because i use the hooks which are measured in millimeters.

    Thank You! :)

  • Hi! Loved the video. Very helpful. :) I Just wanted to know the finished length and circumference of the cap, so that i know if I've got the right size. Thanks. :)

  • @VaishNaik I am estimating 15 inches around

  • these video tutorials seem to be the way to go for me. I've had very skilled people try and teach me and I've tried learning from books to no avail. I've only ever made very plain blankets with a stitch that, by all accounts, I must've made up because it doesn't exist. But I think I can do this.

  • @cbeyer23 That's funny! I was crocheting with a stitch that I made up too!

  • Teresa, can a brim be added to this easily to make a brimmed beanie for my nephew?

  • @Christopherslady yes you can add a brim. I will estimate about 15-20 stitches. You will have a better idea as you are working them. Work a slip stitch to secure and round the brim on the end of each row. Three rows will probably be enough.

  • whats a magic loop? do u need it for the hat?

  • @jessicakd You can use a chain 3 or 4 to start the cap. The magic loop is another technique used to start the cap.

  • Good video for showing how to start a circle using the "magic circle". Also good for showing how to increase and how to change colors. Thank you.

  • @Jinjerbread317 You are welcome.

  • Great video, thanks so much! I'm 29 weeks pregnant and so excited to be crocheting my first baby hat. I have crocheted many scarves, but never hats. I have a question - my hat has turned out having 65 stitches instead of 48 at row 9! How did this happen? I followed your video very closely and don't feel I added any extra stitches! Will this make the hat way too big for a newborn? Thanks for your help!

  • @AlissKD Extra stitches will make the hat larger. I am not sure how you got extra stitches. I would suggest that you finish the hat and make a second hat counting closely so the hat stays smaller.

  • @tjw1963 Thank you for the quick response! I counted SO closely! I'm a perfectionist so it's driving me crazy that this happened! I'll finish it and then make another and see what happens. I almost wonder if I'm not putting my needle in the right place when I crochet the stitches. Do you suggest I make it longer than 22 rows now since it's a bigger hat? At 65 stitches, how old of a baby do you think it will fit?

  • @AlissKD I would suggest that you measure the hat. I have a head size estimate chart on my crochet blog.

  • HELP!! I am making this hat in one solid color. Do I chain one at the end of the row? Before starting the new? The hat seems to have raised rows. I made this same hat with the changing of colors and it turned out wonderful. But has thrown me with staying on a solid color. Not sure what to do. :) Thank you.

  • @harleydiva1200cc I recommend that you stagger where you start each round so you do not have a raised seam. Staggering is just attaching the yarn in another location(stitch) when you change color. When you join, make sure you are putting your hook below the two loops below the starting stitch. This will help reduce a visible seam.

  • I started making this for my cousin's 6 month old Daughter..I used a I hook and 4 ply yarn...and I'm not sure it's going to fit her or not. I'm on round 21. Is there anything I can do at this stage to make it bigger?

  • @Lovemegoofy You would need to rip back to work in more increase rounds and stitches.

  • hi, this video is fantastic although i am completely hopeless first time roud, i will at least have to watch it ten more times. hah thank you very much!!

  • @lyndseyrob25 Keep practicing and you will get the hang of it.

  • felicitaciones aprendo muchas cosas hermosas con tus videos gracias por subirlos

  • your videos are excellent, you are great

taking time to this so people can learn how to crochet

i have done lots of your projects

    Thank You ,

  • @angie579 You are welcome! :)

  • if you watch this video and others and still don't know how to begin with the magic loop, maybe crocheting isn't for you. Plus, you don't have to start with the magic loop. You can just chain 3 or 4; join at the beginning and then single crochet in the middle of the circle that you created. I have not crocheted before and learned everything from these videos. I now make beautiful things and can read patterns. My baby girl just has the cutest hats, head-bands, cardigans. Thank you Teresa.

  • Sadly, I was lost on the magic loop... >.< Do you have a video about it, maybe?

  • @sammysue222 I do have a separate video for the magic loop. I will send you the link.

  • @tjw1963 Thank you, so much! =]

  • Thank you! :)

  • What type if yarn and size needle would you use to make bout a newborn size hat?

  • @mondays4aday Size E or F crochet hook with 3 ply yarn. There will be some modification and trial and error.

  • I just wanted to say thank you for this tutorial. It was exactly what I was looking for! It was simple and very easy to follow. I appreciate the written instructions as well. Thanks again!

  • @kwizsica You are welcome.

  • So.... this wonderful woman is giving FREE crochet lessons on youtube including slow motion clips and there are some posters who are so incredibly rude. If she doesn't give you what you're looking for, FIND IT SOMEWHERE ELSE. Don't bag on her for generosity spending her time filming and editing clips to help us learn to crochet. When you post sarcastic comments, you make yourself look like a total buffoon. Theresa is such a class act, even when someone is rude, she is still respectful.

  • @Yellowpeep Very true.. Some dumb people dont know how to use youtube or internet and then blame Teresa. Teresa you are a sweetheart, No one teaches as you do and you even take time to clear our doubts. Even I am a beginner and I asked u hw to start with the Crochet and according to your instructions i did it. I went to your blog and learnt the beginner stitches first, and then started with the other project. In 3 days i learnt all stiches, did a baby beanie and mobile phone pouch.Tnx a ton

  • @Yellowpeep hear hear bravo, i agree with you 100% thank you thank you

  • I wish you would re-upload the very beginning where you do the magic loop. You did it too fast here and I didn't get it. (I'm a visual learner,so written instructions wouldn't do me any good lol) Other than that...this video is very helpful. =)

  • pls ignore ignorance regarding the sarcastic comment. Some people are idiots

  • I am only on round 6 and my hat is already turning into a mini hat. Is it supposed to do that? I have never done a hat before (adult or baby) so I'm not sure how big exactly this will be..

  • @thecali4 You may naturally crochet tight or are using smaller yarn which will make the cap smaller. The easiest way to make the cap larger is to use a larger crochet hook. The next way to make the cap larger is to modify with additional increase rounds and stitches.

  • Comment removed

  • @soniaxsoniaxsonia I do not understand the sarcasm, because I showed how to do the beginning.

  • Comment removed

  • @soniaxsoniaxsonia I sent you a playlist for the beginner crochet stitches so you can become familiar with them and then come back to this project.

  • @soniaxsoniaxsonia - Hey turd , she doesn't have to show us any of it! Stop your entitlement snotty attitude and be grateful!! Sheesh! Don't be rude dude!

  • Hey, since it's a baby beanie I bought baby-sized yarn and everything is coming out tiny. Any recommendations?

  • Comment removed

  • @twelvethirteenyo I used 4-ply yarn with this baby cap. You can use the baby yarn and work additional increase rounds which will make the cap larger.

  • @tjw1963 Great so just to be clear, I should start the hat the same way you did with 10 stitches, 20, 27, etc and just do more increase rounds before I start with the continuous single crochets?

  • Hi Teresa! You always have the most helpful vids! Thanks for sharing your talent & knowledge

  • Hi Teresa,

First, thank you so much for providing your videos! I was not able to learn any other way in the past. I really look forward to viewing them.

I do have a question on the striped beanie regarding round 3. It says sc in each for 2 stitches, then double in third stitch. That makes 4 total and does not factor into the 27 total for that line. I've tried it many ways and am afraid I'm just not getting it. Can you help?

    Thanks,

    Traci

  • @Tracilynn0813 The written instructions are posted on my crochet blog. There are 7 increase stitches evenly worked around this round. It is not necessary for everything to mathematically fit perfect as long as the stitches are evenly placed. It will still look alright.

  • this is very nice I congratulate you just do not understand much because I speak Spanish

  • @katerine2795 Gracias

  • I hate when my grandma gives me this shit.

  • @RustRooster My goodness sakes, I am sorry she has sent this to you! Your grandma loves you!!

  • excellent video i have completed this article and well done, i will be doing more.

  • @jackieandroger1 Thank you.

  • Teresa , I've done your baby hat and the salamon's knot dress and it came out beautiful . Do you have patterns for sweaters for toddler shes 2 yrs old. thanks mena

  • Hi Teresa, why do you join in (in) a different place each time you start a new round???

    Thanks! :)

  • @33Muslimah I join in a different place to stagger the starting round. The slip stitch may create added bulk and give a distorted look.

  • HI Teresa, I was looking for the Half double crochet baby beanie video that you did and cannot find it anymore. I noticed that you are doing an overhaul, and wondered if you will be reposting it. thank you so much for all of your hard work to help us learn this great art.

  • @lunaqua No videos were supposed to be deleted with the maintenance I was doing so this is a big error. I have written to YouTube and hope that they will restore the video. If they don't, I will repost them again.

  • Lady, you are the bomb!!! :-)))

  • How can I add a brim to this cap? Or maybe there already is a tutorial for a baby cap with brim? Thanks!

  • @laspilly You can add a brim to any cap.

  • @tjw1963

The problem is I don't how to make a brim. Is there a tutorial somewhere? Tks!

  • @laspilly I sent you a link to a brim that will need modified for a smaller cap.

  • What size is this hat?

  • What size is this hat?

  • Do you have any idea what H is in UK sizes? We use numbers.

  • its nr 6

  • Comment removed

  • Size H is equal to 5mm

  • TY so much you made this easy to understand as with all your videos. I am def. a new HUGE FAN!

  • I have come back to crocheting after a long absence, and want to thank you for teaching me! I have watched a number of your videos and they have been a great help.

  • Thank you, I appreciate the comment.

  • that is sooo cute

  • madam

i try it but didn't get the right shape , width wise it gets wrong , it became longer

pls help & send me the solution

  • The cap is supposed to get longer after the crown is complete.

  • i dont know why but it came diff. so i stop it and make something different lol

  • thank you for putting the video up.... i really need it....once again. THANK YOU...

  • please help.. I have made two of these and each time as I go the beanie gets bigger and bigger and looks more like a hat than a beanie??

  • It sounds as though you are continuing to increase to much maybe. Increasing is where you are putting two stitches in one stitch so the cap will expand and get larger. I also have written instructions on my crochet blog. The link to the written instructions is posted to the right of the video under "More Info".

  • i think you got it wrong in round 3,,, and u did 2 dc in each st

  • What great tutorial video! I made this hat for my 5 year old daughter. You have re inspired my lost hobby of crocheting. I had lost interest when I had trouble with making the chain four ring...so thanks for introducing me to the magic loop it truly is magical. lol!

  • You are welcome. Happy crocheting. :)

  • Hello! love your videos! can you use a chain at the begging instead of the magic loop?

  • Yes, you can use a chain 3, join instead of the magic loop.

  • Thank you so much

  • this looks like some thin i can do but i am new at this crocheting stuff so i need two wach this vdieo more times so i can make stuff 4 babys

  • I bet you will be crocheting in no time at all. Keep practicing and you will get the hang of it.

  • What kind of yarn should I use for a newborn baby? Cotton? Or baby yarn which is acrylic, I think?

    Thank you.

  • I would use something soft like Caron or the Red Heart soft yarn. Both are acrylic. I like the 4-ply better than the sport weight which takes longer to work up. You may find that you like the baby yarn better.

  • I will take a look at these kinds the next time I'm shopping for yarn. Thank you for your quick reply!

  • Thanks this is just the hat I was looking for. I love to crochet and your videos are just great. Thanks again for this design.

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Hi..My friend is pregnant and I crocheted this beanie just now for her baby. It has come out beautifully. :) Thank you for this amazing tutorial. my next project is the baby booties..:)

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Hi,

was just wondering how you would adjust this pattern for different yarn and crochet hooks but still get it to fit the same sized baby

  • This is where gauge plays a role. You crochet at least a 4x4 inch swatch. The swatch will tell you how many stitches are made for that yarn and crochet hook. You will need to have a basic understanding of increasing to modify. This means you may have more stitches in a round than the original pattern to compensate for the smaller yarn or smaller crochet hook.

  • I used a 4mm size hook.and after adding

those rnds i've got an extra brim, which makes it look like a hat.

    thanks for ur response.

  • i used size 9 steel hook.

  • I used a 5MM aluminum crochet hook so that will explain why you hat came out small.

  • ya as i told u i was on the 22nd rnd, now the increase is by just half an inch for 3 rnds. now my cap size is just 9 inches.i feel the cap is going out of shape...it was 8.5 inches till 22 rnds now its increasing.what am doing is right? confused whether to continue.

  • What size crochet hook are you using?

  • thanks 4 ur response.i did 3more rnds as u'd suggested.shud i continue in the same manner ?

  • Is the cap expanding and getting larger?

  • hi i'm a new crocheter.being inspired by ur videos i;ve made a basket, bingobag, baby bootie. it all turned out fine,am trying this baby beanie.i used a different hook and added 2 more rnds to increase the size now i've made 22 rnds and ended up with a relatively small cap. is there any alternative 2 increase the size at this point or just do a new one.

    thanks 4 all ur videos.

  • You would need to add 2 increases evenly on your new round for the cap to increase. You can try 1 single in each of the next 3 and the two in the same stitch.

  • would i be able to make this hat to fit a newborn preemie?

  • With some modification. You would not do as many rounds with increases and modify the hat size for a premie.

  • also, how would the end result differ if i use a diffrent type of string

(one thats not too thin but the type i want for the beanie {lightweight cotton yarn} (i dont want to use the 4 ply worsted yarn because its kinda furry, which i dont want))

  • Using a different yarn will result in a different size. Most likely you could have a different size anyway with your crochet style and tension.

  • Comment removed

  • Im just learning how to crochet and am using your other videos to learn how to do all teh terms you mention throught the video. can i follow the instructions you are giving here but with a diffrent sized hook to make the striped beanie for a 4-6 year old's head... if so, what size hook should i use or changes should i make when following your instructions, or will it not work at all?

  • The hat would be made for the size of their head. I have used a size H hook for a 15" hat and a size I hook for an 18" hat. You could try using a size J hook and possible come up with something to fit their head. You will need to crochet additional rounds for a longer length.

  • Will this fit a one year old boy?

  • This one will fit a 6 month old. If you use a larger hook like an I or J size hook, the cap will fit a larger head.

  • ok... I am using a 7.00mm hook and 8 ply yarn. do you think that will fit a one year old if i do all 22 rows?

  • if i use a size J hook and 4 ply baby yarn will this fit a 1 year old boy?

  • It will depend on the size of the head of the 1 year old. I recently crochet this pattern with a size I/5.5mm crochet hook, 4 ply yarn and made a cap that would fit an 18" head.

  • I can't start! ... It's so hard ... This is my first attempt to make something in crochet.

  • start with something more simple like a scarf. that was my first piece that i made by crochet. its simple and thats what beginners should start with. oh and u have to learn the basics too

  • I've been trying to learn how to crochet by watching videos but its so confusing!!! i would ask my grandmother to teach me but she's left-handed and i'm not =( WHAT DO I DO?!

  • What are you finding confusing?

  • you can learn how to do it left handed i write right handed but i live around lefties so i have to just get used to it and if you just have to learn to do it that way

  • isnt it the same?

  • Sit across from your Grandma. I did that with my Aunty and I learn just find. She was a lefty and me a righty.

  • ok i ve got it now :)

the yarn i ve bought doesnt say how many ply it is. its quite thin. i ve finished round 3 but it doesnt look as big as yours. you keep increasing until round 7 then its just 1SC until the end.

for my thin yarn, until how many rounds do you think i should increase? (i am always confused with the increasing!)

  • Maybe 3 or 4 more increase rounds.

  • i have been trying to watch this video many times, but it just wont open!!! could you plz send me a diff link, if you ve one?

  • It should be working.

  • yes it is now....

i tried with two extra increase rounds... for some reason am not getting it right. i made two beanies using your HDC baby beanie tutorial and they came out perfect. but this one (so far) doesnt seem to become a beanie. it looks more like a flower after 13-14 rounds... i think i will start again from scratch ;(

  • You mentioned that your yarn is thin. I would suggest that you use two strands of your yarn at the same time to make this cap.

  • i find two strands pretty difficult ;D will try

  • Great videos!!! thank you so much for doing this....

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Hehehe...silly me thought you finished the hat in 15 minutes but you were right it didn't take me much longer than 1 hour for the full product and it turned out very nice for my first time! Thanks to your wonderful video I have mastered the beanie cap and now my whole family is wearing them!:)

  • Now you all have some warm heads for this cold winter that has been taking place.

  • WOW! What a beautiful hat and it was done in under 15 minutes! Your tutorial is the best one i've seen. I'm going to make this hat tonight for my little boy. Thanks!!!

  • Thank you. It will take longer to make the actual cap. I edited portions of each round so full rounds are not shown. You should be able to get this cap done in less than an hour.

  • is there anyway to make a little puffball on top?

  • Yes, I do have video tutorial for a pom pom yarn ball.

  • What if I wanted to make one of these for a 2-3 year old?

P.S. I'm in love with your tutorials, they've really helped me learn!

  • Thank you. You would use the adult pattern and change to a smaller hook.

  • how do u do the magic loop?

  • Type or copy and paste these keywords into the youtube search: Magic Circle Crochet tjw1963

You will find a slow motion video.

  • that is very cool

i did it & it was successful

    thanks Teresa

  • You are welcome. Great to hear that it turned out.

  • i did this....only on a smaller scale for my dog. it's soo cute. we just had her fur trimmed so it's keeping her head toasty dduring these cold days! thansk so much for sharing yor knowledge. I wish you a happy holiday weekend

  • I bet it is cute. I would love to see a picture. I would even post it on my crochet blog if you gave me permission. A lot of people would get a big kick out of it.

  • This color change method is great. Beginners will find this method easy to learn too. :-)

  • Thank you. Hats have turned out to be great beginner projects.

  • WooW thanks alot ;)

  • You are welcome. :)

  • I need to learn how to make one for my sissie when she has her baby.

  • Congratulations.

  • Oh, i like this color-switching technique too!

  • I wanted to show both ways. Either way can be applied to the adult cap or baby cap. You can do the baby cap carrying the yarn.

  • Thanks. That's really cool that you show all different techniques instead of sticking to what your favorite is - that way people can try all the different methods themselves and see what works for them.

    Thanks again!
