It's nice to see Maestro Levine wore his best polo short for this appearance. Did he pull that thing out of the hamper for this interview? He probably has sweat pants on underneath that table, too.
Lets face the truth: Elliott Carter creates no music, but a random sequence of sounds with no connection, no melody, no background, no tempo or rhythm and no counterpoint. D. Barenboim is absolutely right about one thing - the complexity. Eliot's creations are really too complex, messy and unpleasant. How dare he put Carter and Beethoven in the same sentence?
How funny that most critics said the exact same thing when Beethoven published his "große Fuge". They called it a piece that was too complex, too messy sounding and too unbalanced.
But the fact is- Carter is among the composers with the most intense inner coherence. His music may seem inintuitive at first glance, but it is one of the most beautifully crafted things in art.
And as for his music not being pretty- life itself isn't always pretty. Why neglect this fact in art?
I'm sorry to say that you did not understand anything of what I've said. Frankly, I cannot call this sequence of sounds with the name of "music". Have you ever heard a fax machine connecting to another one? Can you name it "music". Do me a favor, think about any characteristic of music and try to put it on Carter's "creations", and you will see that it doesn't make any sense.
In my opinion music is on the listener's ear. It is not a sound or structure or anything else but only a way of perceiving those things. If the listener likes it, then it is music for him/her (and as valid as anybody else's music). Sound is both noise and music at the same time. Look up Electroacoustics if you feel curious. Cheers
All looks like Baremboim created the West Divan orchestra because now he wishes the Nobel Prize for himself to become the new Albert Schweitzer. That is to place himself above the other conductors he could not compete with as a musician. He should also allow a palestinian conductor to share "his" podium... and the glory.... His worries about peace started only a few years ago, after 40 years of career without getting involved with the issue... Why so late Mr. Barenboim?
I have to say that there has never seen anything like Elliott Carter. I was at his Carnegie Birthday Concert and was yelling the whole time during the standing ovation/Happy Birthday portion of the evening. His new pieces are the best he has ever written. He really has been on a roll for the past 15 years. What an inspiration. Yay Elliott! Arf! Arf!
u must read this. once u have started there is no turning back. a little 10 year old girl was raped and murderded in 1945. her body was not found until 1947. then a boy last week read this and did not copy and paste this message. the dead girl appeared in his room haunting him and killed him. if you do not copy and paste this onto 10 vidoes in 30 minutes the dead girl will apear in your room tonight and haunt you and kill you. well you better start to copy and paste to be saved
a very concise summary of "the late style" - Could someone put up the whole episode? It's on the Charlie Rose site but I'd rather permanently save it. Happy 100th Elliott Carter!

@GreggaryPeccary If all people talked slowly as Barenboim in the video, I would get everything. It is really understandable.
