  • Thanks, I've been looking for a tutorial like this for 1 hour and I finally found this and started my plane :)

  • How do u know how to do this or where do u learn?.....my fsx to start the engine is ctrl E????

  • Nice video I subbed

  • Thanks this video helps.

  • dude respcet from england this is the onley tutorial that i have managed to get my aircraft to start up but now i need help with autopilot ive setupmy fmc to configuation but my autopilot dosent seem to want to turn on > any ideas ? thnx

    GREAT TUTORIAL XD

  • oh man, u made a lot of mistakes: 1.make sure, that the emergency lights are armed, before you do anything in the cockpit. Make also sure that you move PASS OXYGEN knob from RESET to NORMAL! otherwise, all of your virtual pax will die. After that you can switch the other knobs which are connected with the airoxygensystem.

The Equip cooling must be on at a outdoortemp. of ca. 25 degrees c*

  • Thanks!

  • Also, I have the PMDG "Queen of the Skies" Aircraft, is that outdated?

    Thanks again!

  • How did you get the panel to not say "Yaw Damper INOP" and "No Autoland"? Also in my panel the N1 and EGT areas are squished together and overlapping each other in a mess. Any fix?

    Thanks!

  • @sushi064 i have this too grrrr anyone know how to fix

  • @ozstriker1984 I know why they're overlapping... the PMDG 747 is only for FS2004!!! Pisses me off..

  • @sushi064 i worked out how to fix it, you have to wait for your irs to align which takes ten minutes or you can go into settings and change it to 15 secs

  • @ozstriker1984 i found out how to fix it, you have to wait for your irs to align which takes 6 to 7 minutes, i thought it did it automatically, you can go through settings and change the time to 15 secs

  • i know you did autostart, but in real world procedures arent you supposed to leave the fuel controls switches to cutoff while supplying bleed air until 18% n2 and then set them to run?

  • very simple and informative. My appreciations. I enjoyed listening to your patiently description.

  • you're movies are great! but... my panel.....you know the hdg stats. they don't work :s

  • fantastic...thank u very much......

    grtz from holland

  • its probably best to look at the pmdg tutorials available before starting on your own I always liked to come back to them and watch fmc and startup tutorials when i started

  • Respond to this video... where did you get the plane from

  • pascal1029, is your IRS alignment time set to instant in the PMDG options menu. If it isn't, the alignment time has to count down to 0 before you switch to NAV. Also, sometimes you have to copy and paste the GPS position twice to set the IRS position. In any case, you should have a partial display when you switch on the STANDBY Power. Do you not even have that?

  • I turn the IRS from off to nav to align (all 3

and open my FMC and enter my position and stuff. Than I switch them back to NAV.

but the display doesn't show heading, map or anything.

    help?

  • pull the started first then the fuel

  • Thanks working great !!!!

  • I can't get the primary display to work after i align the irs, it just has the speedtape, and altitude indicator and it is incorrect

  • 1 Question aren't you meant to start the packs before starting the engines ?

  • @mcwhizzkid123 Negative. The packs use bleed air from the APU/engine source. In order to have enough bleed air supply from the APU to the engines, the air conditioning packs must be turned off.

If you've flown on a large jet, you may have noticed the air conditioning goes off for a little bit while the engines are starting.

  • @guy014 ok it was only a simple question no need to get defensive on me , at least i know know and yes i have flown on a large jet just not that one !!!!

  • @mcwhizzkid123 I wasn't being defensive, I was simply explaining to you what packs are and how they are used when starting the engines. Safe skies!

  • I just bought PMDG a few days ago and was struggling as how to start up the engines. . It will take me a while before I am able, but at lease you have given the instructions. thank you dawud

  • theoretically u shud actually go 1-2-3-4 and there won't be asymetrical thrust if the parking brake is on and auto brake is configed. u dont start 1&4 at the same time because that causes to much of a draw from the APU and that basically fucks ur plane. just follow pmdg's original checklist and if u need to just watch their tutorial vids and u will be fine.

  • what about the Gen CONT switches?

  • dude this part 1 and 2 tutorial awesome its very clear it would be nice if u make a video like PMDG 747 using fmc full auto land or from take off and land

anyway thanks for this awesome tutorial i learnt a lot from this :)

  • 1. Engines are stabilized about one minute after the start switches are back to normal position, not instantaneously.

    2. First check APU bleed switch is set off, then after approx. 1 min you can turn off the APU. (not so important as this unit remains running for about a minute after the switch is set off ;-))

    Nice tutorial :-)

  • you just frogt the TCAS

  • TCAS is not part of a start-up procedure.

  • engine start :

    4+3 next 2+1

  • all the checklists/tutorials and aoa says you should start up 1-4-2-3. wouldnt 4-3 2-1 cause asymmetrical thurst or something? im very green to the 744

  • Perfect! ;-) You answered all my questions! Think I'm gonna try flying from EHAM to KJFK right away! Many thanks!

  • did you have a nice flightt?

  • thx i was wondering how to get the displays on.

  • I was having some problems with this plane.. thanks for the tutorial.. it solved them all!!

  • Great tutorial!Thanx for posting!

  • Great tutorial on the PMDG 744. I was wondering whether you have plans to create another tutorial covering the basics of an FMC setup?

    Thank-you.

  • Certainly. Make sure you subscribe to my other joint channel; Gear Down FS.

With the help of 2 other fellow simmers, we'll go over many aspects of FS.

I once tried making an FMC tutorial but it came out to be an hour and a half long. I did cover a lot of things, perhaps too much. On this new channel, we'll go over things one video at a time.

  • @Joshilini

hi u can find fmc tutorials on youtube by putting in fmc pmdg in the search box above - i use them too

  • Fantastic video! Much better than reading the manual. 5*

  • Thanks, mate! Glad this helped.

  • Great video 5\5

but I have some questions ,,,

1 - should we close the APU after starting the engines ?

2 - what's the benefit of opening the four engine bleeds without the APU ?

3 - when we should open the APU ?

& Thanks Again 4 this great video

  • 1 - Yes. The reason you use the APU is to provide auxiliary power, hence the name. You only need it when at the gate to start the engines - it provides sufficient airflow allowing this.

2 - The bleed valves are what regulate airflow around the aircraft. Having all four engine bleeds on reduces the workload on all four engines since they're working together to provide air conditioning.

3 - You normally turn on the APU right before engine starts (before pushback). The reason being is because...

  • ... you normally have Ground Power powering all of your equipment, so the APU is not needed until you have to start the engines.

  • how much did your comp cost? mine im building cost 1400 with the gtx 285 but I'm thinking of spending 200 more to get the 295...

  • I spent around $2600 CAD. If you're building a system to mostly or only play FSX, don't spend $600 for a 295 GTX. A 9800 GTX is enough. I use mine for all the new games that are coming out. Arma 2 is a very demanding game but I can play it no problem.

  • FSX is not fully independet on the Graphics card , it's independent on a strong processor

  • Correct. But you would rather say that FSX is dependent, not independent. ;)

  • i'm getting the amd phenom 2 quad core 3.0 ghz stock clock (i know i'm an amd boy)

  • WooHoo Thats is...

    Go ahead

  • great video mate,

one hting that you didnt check and its crucial that you do is, weather the cabin pressure is set to auto, if its set to manual all of you passengers and crew would die of oxygen starvation in the climb,

    great vid tho pal (Y)

  • Thanks for the reminder. Now, I check the entire overhead before I go anywhere. Glad you enjoyed this video!

  • im Getting this bird in 2 month!!!

  • Awesome! Have fun flying the Queen!

  • thanks i did everything but my screens don't go on

  • Well...the version from torrent portals won't work.

  • lol man are you actually so dumb that you ask how to get the illegal torrents to work, on this video?? these guys have spent like 2 years perfecting the model so that it will work realistically and 2 years vs the amount of people buying their products isnt huge amounts of money earned..

  • No...this comment you mean is actually a reply to wibblemu9's comment. His screens won't go on, and I told him why. Thats all.

  • lol, ok well to anyone downloading it illegaly, my comment stands. stry nbg for flaming you though.

  • @zaphr89 Hey, no problem!

  • my pmdg 747 is from torrent and mine works just fine :)...even used the official updates from the pmdg website

  • Flaps 10 Degrees for departure unless serious wind conditions are at play.

  • I just watched both parts. Worked really well, thanks for the tutorial :D

  • You're very welcome! :)

  • great video thanks for your help

  • No problem!

  • thx very much for this tutorial, will go to the sim right now ;)

  • Thanks for watching! Good luck!

  • can you use external power until you are ready to start the apu? if yes, how?

  • Yes, you can use external power. You would set it up via the PMDG options in the menu bar if I remember correctly.

  • Thanks

  • nice video.. but question...

why doesn't the aircraft get itself to the speed set in the FMC when Vnav is on?

  • Autothrottle must be engaged, the autopilot must be engaged and VNAV must be engaged.

There must also be an ECON cruise speed in the FMC's VNAV page.

  • nice video, I have one question:

how to change the stabilizer trim?

  • You would open up the center pedestal and look for he stabilizer trim indicator on the left hand side. Press either END or HOME on your keyboard and watch as the indicator moves up and down. Set it to what your FMC tells you.

  • thanks :)

  • i've done everything exactly as you did but when i turn the APU back off, i get a sound and L-Utility-R and all gen Cont light up and i get some messages on the mfd

  • ok, figured it out, you forgot to mention to turn gen cont on

  • Must say I like the tutorial, however you do not just have to start 1+4 or 2+3. Some companies (Lufthansa, Virgin Atlantic, etc) prefer to start their engines as 4+3, wait then 2+1.

    Other than that, great tutorial.

  • Oh yea I know. ;)

This video is by no means an airliner video that shows you the exact proper way to start this plane up. Just a quick basic tutorial for beginners to get them flying.

    Thanks for the comment. :)

  • No worries. I am thinking of doing a video myself to train people on the 747.

  • Simple the best! Thank you very much!

  • very useful tutorial, thank you man!

  • good tutorial only thing i can say that is wrong with it is that its all over the place. meaning that the overhead panel is designed to start from top left to and go down and finish at the bottom right ie the lights, but obviously the beacons come on before engine start

  • Very helpful i needed someone to help me in starting up the aircraft. You came in handy thanks!

  • you must not turn on the stroboscopics lights until you are in the ruway, but is a good tutorial anyways ;)

  • You turn on the strobes while "at stand" to WARN ground crew you are starting engines.

  • You mean the beacons...

You must turn on the strobes when you enter the runway.

  • dont you mean beacon/anti col lights ?

strobs go on before entering the runway same with pitot heat

  • 747-400 was designed to specifically have pitot heat on automatically, I believe once bleed air is introduced via either ground air or the APU.

On earlier versions of the 747, the 737 and other aircraft, pitot heat is usually turned on at the gate, not at the runway threshold.

  • wow thank you so much i just bought the bird today i tried flying it and i got lost lol thank you so much

  • Glad I could help! :)

  • I got the start up procedures down , but is it possible for you to make a tutorial on the FMC, that's the only roadblock I have left to get over.

  • Thanks for finding use for this tutorial. I have thought long and hard about making an FMC tutorial but have realized it would be very long and tedious and there is just so much to cover. Thankfully, there is already a VERY complete FMC tutorial on the PMDG 737. Search "PMDG FMC tutorial" here on YouTube.

  • Glad I could help! Happy landings!

  • Bloody brilliant. Thanks again. I wonder how many times I need to watch this before I memorise the procedures?

  • I'm glad you found use of these videos! Enjoy your flight!

  • when i turn off the APU after you said the engines are powering the aircraft, my ias/mach knob is unresponsive and my heading knob... any ideas ?

  • Thanks mate you really helped! 5*

  • What about Tcas

  • What about it?

  • How do u turn it om

  • On the radio stack, turn the TCAS knob to RA to display aircraft in your vicinity. Of course, you need to have traffic set to a certain % to be able to see them on the NAV dislpay.

  • thanks! it really helped me a lot.

  • How do you use the keyboard for the FMC?

  • On the right side of the FMC, you'll see a vertical black bar. Press it and you will be notified that you are in keyboard mode by the KBD light that appears in the scratch pad.

  • Tutorial about FMC 747 step by step dude please or if you have one send me please

  • A really Masterpiece!!! Theese videos helped me a lot as a newbie in PMDG 747 thanks dude =)

  • Thank you so much for that tutorial.

I've just purchased the 747 and now I should be able to fly it. So, let's rock the VATSIM airspace!

  • thanks for the vid you helped me a lot!!! just one more question ... after i started the plane ... everything works fine except for navigation display and the pfd of the f/o how can i turn that on?

  • Sorry, I wouldn't know, I never encountered that issue.

  • are you sure FMC is set up correctly?

  • ok thanks nice vid 5 stars.

  • Can you make a video where you learn how to land(whole approach) ? i cant find any good ones?

  • Hi man! Thank you so much for part 1, 2 startup tutorial! Its was great and easy to understand :)

Hope you can make more tutorials for the PMDG 747-400

  • Mate these vids have been a huge help to me, I spent about 2 hours yesterday following the checklist to get this thing started, when i finally got to starting the engines... Nothing. thanks to your video i know what i didn't do so will get to it tonight, thanks mate... Hopefully will be able to do it quicker than I did yesterday though, Great tutorial mate thanks :-)

  • Do you have iFly 747?

  • No I don't.

  • thanks dude

  • you are the man. i would have paid for this if i could. very thorough job!!

  • Thanks, I enjoy sharing my knowledge about these complex aircraft, even though this isn't professional, I consider it pretty close, it gets the job done.

  • good vid.

one thing.. what do i put on the ZFW on the FMC ? :S ?

  • You just hit LSK 3 and the weight will automatically be filled in.

  • yeah i know, i wasnt even supposed to post the comment lol.

anyway. how come the plane always gets into a holding pattern and then VNAV disconnect ? :S

  • A holding pattern requires you to input information into the FMC, altitude, speed, holding point... For it to hold speed and altitude, VNAV needs to be engaged. Though you can manually fly a holding pattern in which case you can use ALT hold and SPD on the MCP, then VNAV wouldn't be engaged.

  • Good video mate,

Get that FMC guide up now!!

  • haha Thx! It's almost done.

  • Thanks for everyone's nice comments! I'm currently preparing the flight plan and writing down what I'm going to say! The FMC tutorial will be up soon!

  • an FMC guide would be cool,

    Great turtorial btw!

  • nice

  • hy man:) please make if you want a entire tutorial with all(take-off, cruise, and landing):) sorry for my english:D

  • my gauges dont come alive

  • If you want an FMC tutorial on the PMDG 747-400, leave a comment and if enough of you want me to make it, I will see when I have time and make one.

  • hey do you know how to dissconnect the alerones from the nose weel?

  • Sorry? I do not understand your question lol.

  • i mean you know when you taxi and u use the alerons how do you disconnect that?

  • Oh man... I'm starting to understand. Tell me if you have a joystick or a yoke as your controller. Btw, its aileron ;)

  • i have a joystick and i woundring how to dissconnect the alerons from having controll of the nose weel.

  • Ok I think I know what the problem is. You have Auto Rudder selected. Go to Aircraft > Realism Settings and de-select auto rudder.

  • thank you soo much it worked!:) !!!!!

  • No problem! Happy flying!

  • you too o sorry there's one more quoestion do you know how to turn in the pushback like when you start the pushback how do you make turns in the pushback?

  • Hehe, you simply press 1 or 2 right after pressing Shift+P.

    Example: Shift + P + 1

    or Shift + P + 2

  • sorry it didnt work do you have any suggestions why?

  • There is no way it didn't work. You press Shift + P to pushback and RIGHT after you press P (you release Shift and P) and then you press 1 or 2 really quickly.

  • sorry i didnt work question what is that commad called?

  • To answer your question more easily, check out the learning center within Flight Simulator, it has alot of usefull information including pushbacks.

  • ok do you know were in the learning center you can find out about pushback?

  • You can go to the index and search under P and find pushback.

  • One question....why should i set RCL (recall)???

    I didn't understand. tahnks

  • You hit recall just to make sure that no errors arise after the engines have started. Normally if there is an error during engine start the EICAS will show you. It's just a safety precaution.

  • Man.... i didn't work......

I made everything, but the PFD and "navigation screen" haven't showed up, and some yellow warming was being on EICAS screen and they haven't disappeared

  • PS:Sorry about my bad english, corect me if i made any mistake.

Thanyou again, and sorry the disturb

  • Your PFD and NAV display will come alive once you set the FMC's IRS position. One thing to note is that I used instant alignment time for the IRS. You can select this in PMDG > Options > IRS.

  • A few errors here and there, so not 100% correct, but it'll set people on the right track for sure. I strongly recommend everyone to read the manual and other manuals you may get a hold of, and also learn how to use charts if you really want to get the most out of the PMDG 747.

Feel free to leave me a message if any of you have any questions about the PMDG 744 or the LDS 767. Overall a nice vid ;)

  • Thanks alot. I love this kind of feedback. I've gotten a request for an FMC tutorial as you can see in the comment below. I mean what's the point of starting up this beast and not know how to take her on a flight ;).

    Cheers.

  • there is already a good detailed fmc tut but this is the best start up tut on youtube i can find, thanks alot. i wish the makers though would do a vid too. nice vid

  • Thank you very much. I did this tutorial in "conjunction" to Wturbiasz's 737 startup turorial. And also, his FMC tutorial is THE BEST on YouTube. Though if that tutorial doesn't satisfy your FMC needs for the 747, I might do a tut of my own.

  • I have a couple of questions:

    - Why does my FMC say Invalid Entry even if i followed your instructions?

    - After the engine startup, i turn off the APU and the Engine Bleed And this alarm goes off and i lose my power.

    REQUEST: tutrial on FMC

By the way you have a great tutorial

  • 1. If you are using the real alignment time for the IRS (10min), this is found in PMDG > General > Options > IRS. You must set the IRUs to align as I did and on the NAV display, you will see a countdown timer for the alignment. Once it reaches 1 min and below, you will get the message to enter the IRS position into the FMC. After you have entered it, the NAV display will show 0+MIN. Now you can go ahead and set the IRUs to NAV.

P.S. I used Instant alignment so I did not have to wait.

  • 2. After all four engines have been started up, there is no way you can lose power UNLESS you accidentally set the fuel control switches to CUTOFF. After engine starts, turn the 4th hydraulic demand switch to AUTO, turn OFF the APU bleed, and turn the APU OFF. Last, turn on all 3 packs to NORM.

  • 1-Does it matter if your navdata isn't up to date because i don't feel like buying navdata every month an etc.

2- And can you make a lesson video on how to use the FMC For nav and ILS. that would be great. i know i ask for alot but , like many peaople who watch you videos, i'm more of a monkey see, monkey do, monkey learn kind of guy. Thanks

  • 1. It does not because all you are doing is punching in the coordinates. Try setting the alignment time to instant and follow exactly what I do.

    2. I will see what I can do on the FMC. I might just take the 747 on a simple yet complete flight to show the features of the computer.

  • where can i download the game

  • hey thanx alot, but how do u update the nav data for the fmc?

  • Goto "navdata(dot)at" and from the top, select AIRACs. You will be brought to a new page. Scroll down a bit until you see "Cycle 0808 released!". 0808 is the latest cycle. Click "FMS Data" and from there, select which aircraft you want to download the current AIRAC for. Each one costs credits which you must buy in order to download the data.

  • thank you very much

  • really helpful video... thanks a lot....

  • Thank you for the tutorial. And thanks to kurimaw for your comments on this vid, and in part 1. I've been a MS simmer for about 8 years. I have both levelsd-Boeing 767 and the PMDG 737-800/900 software add-ons to FS9. The 747-400 software is much more complicated and detailed. Anyway, I got my first 747-400 up in the air last night - only after reading the manuals thoroughly and spending 90 minutes on the start-up procedures. Tutorial makes it easier.
