You should try memorycard reader, this way you don't need to connect your camera with computer all the time and all the transfering stuff is much easier.

Aww so sorry for your troubles and that is a good description of how veryyy frustrating it can be! sometimes you really do just have to laugh(later when it's all over with) after you have to call so many different people or push so many different buttons :)
