'One day Hasan Mashhun, Persian art music researcher, asked from one of the most famous Kamancheh players of his time: Why did you put down the Kamancheh? We have lots of violin players, but Kamancheh players, one after another, are becoming old and disabled. That the master replied: There is no student of Kamancheh. People have become modern and play violin!'
I think the violin has a more 'refined' sound and is suited to Western classical music, especially orchestral. Gheychak, Kamancheh etc don't have as clean a sound but they have a lot more soul and give a lot more scope for tonal improvisation. Probably the only good thing to come out of the revolution was that the restrictions they put on western instruments forced musicians to go back to the roots of Persian music and revive these ancient instruments.
The Kamancheh is the ancestor of the persian violin. In fact, the dulcimer came from the ancient Persian santur, and the lute came from the persian barbat. The piano also came from the santur, relating to the strings.
hmmm, Balochi surroz play like voiline good.

this doesn't sound baluchi, but the instrument belongs to the same family as sorooz/sorud, played by baluchi people.
