  • I used to use a DTI to set 34067's valve gear to make sure that the valve gear was exactly on front or back dead centre when taking datums and that all back-lash in the systen had been accounted for. Back-lash is typically four teeth on the drive sprockets, the diference is then split to equalise the valves position when running with regard to forward or reverse running. Then and only then can the valve heads be appropriately shimmed to give optimum valve performance and water consumption.

  • Timing is still out of kilter, although the leaks from the center cylinder seem to have been fixed ... more to be done, I'd guess

  • @noelist A train came out of Bare lane going Carnforth on the line that the flasks use. It runs every day at about 4.30pm - Think it goes to Leeds but might be Barrow. Went past and joined WCML at level crossing just before Tangmere arrived at the signal.
