it sounds like Finland is my dreamland. I'm a very shy person and always take long time to get along well with others. Unfortunately I can never in this life move to Finland as it's too old for me to start a new life all over again in a new place with a new language.
Interesante que el Tango tenga tanto arrastre en Finlandia....haha. Claro que le quitaron toda la pasión al tango. That is like a watered down version of Tango! Lol ....
I haven't been to Finland yet, was thinking about a visit this summer, but my goodness, I wanna be happy! and that did not look happy! they've even managed to make Tango look like German Sauerkraut, sauer, unfriendly and distant !
I am going to Finland soon, so I will see how true this is.
All I know is that my friend and his family found a refuge in Finland. Before that France turned them down, because their skin was too light and they are Christians, not Muslims.
I think Finns are great. If they prefer to be quiet and honest, all the better for them.
German people are the same to! I knew a german women who had the very description the narrator was talking about, and she had the seriousness of the people in the intro of the video COld and serious!
I just don`t understand why Finns won`t tell you they are shy, withdrawned...it seams like a rejection-if you don`t know any better...not every nation is the same, but they are quite extreme at this..and that makes them kinda cute in my eyes (I <3 weirdos) Happy Independance Day from Croatia ;-)
I can't help but wonder if certain characteristics are genetic. I'm almost fully Finnish, but I was raised by two very outgoing parents ( who adopted me ), and yet I act so Finnish, ending up being the black sheep of my family. My birth-mother is more quiet and shy than I am.
Oh gods. I mean, I'm a silly American.. ((And for the record the :Hi! Who are you? I LOVE YOU! is not every American... just me. >.>)) but... seriously? I have a feeling this vid has more of a silly-American spin. Bah on them.
Sounds great to me. I hate when people look at me. Some people in here seem to almost demand that you look at them when walking down the street. Fuck that.
if they are shy they live their lives of their own. americans at times think they have the right to intrude into every spot in the world with their arrogance, and expect everyone to think like them.
Those Finlanders arent just all doom and gloom, us americans just have a culture thats more vocal and less shy, and its us shy guys that are the odd ones out.
hahahah :D i love this. Im totally finnish. And this totally make sense. If you smile at a stranger on the street they think your ether drunk or crazy : DD
i do like to be by myself and i dont look ppl in the eyes becuase of confontations and i dont want ppl to talk to me so maybe it hereditary i live in the states
If you see the way the tango was danced and played in the argentines movies of the beginning of the century XX you will see a lot in common with the finish tango. It lookss that the tango got frozen there.
I'm now 21 years old and I remember saying 'I love you' once in my life time when I was about five or six. I said it to my dad while I was sitting on his lap. Dad answered that one day there would be a man I would love more than him. I said I would never love any man more than I did him. Then I hugged him and we never spoke of this incident again.
I'm Norwegian and we Scandinavians are often characterized as shy, but the Finns are definitely extreme compared Norwegians, Swedes and Danes. I don't have anything against Finns, but I just find it very hard to communicate with people who simply would like to hide instead to someone.
Lol - nice to hear an outsider comment this, somehow always a bit off the core of things :) Makes it sound like 'fear only' -much of the reserve is also linked to respect (giving room) and common sense: 'Who's this fellow, don't know him/her - i'll take my time to estimate what he/she wants'.
And the interviewees like to exaggerate and support the clichés!
Was amusing package of generalisations and categorisations.
I think there are plenty of nice people in Finland, but the sad fact is that many Finns are extremely depressed. This makes them gloomy and angry and very hostile towards everyone, especially towards people who are not as gloomy and depressed as they are. And there are also lots of mental problems here. But luckily the younger Finns are not that bad, atleast most of them. I think that the people aged 40+ are already lost their will to live or something.
@MrChicagoblackhawks People don't touch in Finland, but at the same time they do. It's hard to explain unless you spend time in the country. Finns like their personal space, and they don't touch a lot (unlike Italians), but if you tap some1 on the shoulder or hug a close friend goodbye it's not like they will be offended.
@MrChicagoblackhawks well yea North Americans especially the ones up north are depressed because of lack of sunlight, yes winter is depressing its dark all the time, its very cold you have to wear 3 layers of clothes, just to go outside the roads freeze up with ice causing many accidents, you car slides around a lot in the winter, you have to pay for heating costs, the salt on the road destroys your vechicle by rusting everything on it including brake lines.
that finish women being interviewed seems a bit crazy, like all these years of being in her shell has sent her a bit cookoo and hugely extroverted now. She laughs out loud so easily, even soething that's mildly amusing. hahahahahahahah HAHAHA hahaha haahahah haahahaha HAHAHAHA
This looks like an awkward teenage school dance, except everyone's old. Are the young people like this too? There's no point in being in love if you're just waiting around for it to end. You have to enjoy it while you're lucky enough to have it :)
I was in Finland once: June 1989. Every person I met was kind and honest. I did not find it so much different from other places where the norm is to be reserved. Finns do look you in the eye; and they smile, too. peace
@SOLISDEUS I think it's due to the fact that when rest of the Europe went through industrial revolution, we shivered in -30 C and ate turnips. By the time when we got industrialized and our agriculture evolved so that we could support something like 50 million people, family planing had already droped avrege family size.
My roots go back to Finland, and I'm pretty shy along with a few of my family members. I'm thinking it might be a genetic trait. I enjoy being alone and keeping to myself most of the time, but I will speak out when provoked.
I've met some finnish people and they were just awesome, but thing is that it doesn't seem to very exciting when you live somewhere dark and full of old people. But doesn't matter where you live, you can just make your life perfect if you want.
I love Finalnd. I've read in some of the comments from Finns that it's true. Well, I think the poorer & hotter a country is, there is a chance that it would be one of the happiest countries on Earth, with the exception of Denmark. Wait, why is Denmark happier than Finland? I mean, they are both Scandinavian countries. And also, Finland is OBSSESSED with air guitar. Why not make air guitar a national obssession for Finland. I am still going to visit Finalnd. And probably make everyone smile. :)
@Lindalfi Shy, reserved people are everywhere. They are not the standard for TV or Youtube. Instead, they are genuine and meaningful. Finland seems to be full of such types. Finland is a good country.
@RunkkaajaApina and why are you proud of that , i think thats sad why are finnish people like that here in the us. u would be considered anti social and very strange but why are u guys like that one day i will go to finland and socialize with all of you
@RunkkaajaApina German people are the same to! I knew a german women who had the very description the narrator was talking about, and she had the seriousness of the people in the intro of the video COld and serious! @RunkkaajaApina I am russian and i can understand you. I myself have the same character and dont see anything wrong with it, actually i find this pretty "cool".
lol its true finns are very stubborn in the eastern north region very grumpy, but on the south western parts theyre actually very jolly and love to party =P i got family from both sides pretty entertaining getting them all in one room LOL
This does indeed have good points. For example the "You could say I love you once in a lifetime" was really funny. However It's obvious that this is a rather old document, I would quess close to 1980-. I think tango is a bit old fashioned and the whole concept of showing some old geezers dancing makes it look pretty horrible.
Come to Brazil and learn how to be happy. Even the poorest happen to find time to be happy. I'd love to go to Finland. It must be a beautiful country!
Once I worked in a restoration company as a purchase manager. I had to order tiles from Finland. So I called a company selling the kind of tiles we needed. So I said: "I need so and so much square meters of this and that kind of tiles from your catalogue." And the lady's (Tarja was her name) reply was: "Why?" (!!!!) And I did not have a reply..... Greetings from Latvia:)
They should do one about USA. "In USA, the most favorite hobby is eating junk food and getting extremely obese, and a black man will probably steal your purse every week, and you can get a Masters degree in creationist studies. Atheist are not allowed human rights."
In the UC colleges teach evoultion. If you disagree with them and use logic to prove your theorys. You will still get an f.
So your comment about creationist sudies is not so. I am a creationist but I am not religous. I believe in creation based on scientfiic logic. Einstein was a creationist too and would recieve an F in school again! I think they should try the salsa.
Ahh, what a cool lil' snippet this was. I always thought of 60 minutes as somethintg of a "truth's trumpet" (a Finnish phrase), but I guess they might miss every now and then. Though as other commenters have said, they're not TOTALLY off the mark. The Finland of today, howerver, is quite a bit different from the one in this report. For instance, regardless of the low population, there's a lot more cultural heterogeneity.
I was in Finland 3 yrs ago. I will admit they do not smile, but they are not this cold. When I met my cousin for the first time she hugged me. And she was from the rural north
i went to a finnish american university and we had 6 students from finland there this year. 5 girls one guy. all the girls said no no no this video is stupid. but my roommate, Ilkka Juola, he said it is almost all true...one thing i do know is that its 100% hilarious.
This last lady was the best.Certainly it is better to say "I love you" once in lifetime but to the right person, only if feelings are really there, then to say this to everyone, like Americans, just for the sake of saying it, even without feelings :)...I am going to Finland next month :))))))
Start war agaist us, and you see how united and shy are we.

In opposite people from south are warm and friendly from the beginning, so you dont now what they are really thinking about you.
In in czech rep. we also does not say "I love you" often but still more often than finns :-). It has very deep tought in czech.

Atheist are not allowed human rights."

i live in TEXAS, U.S.A. The sad thing is alot of what you said is TRUE!!

Finnish American University? Where in Finland?

I saw this on 60 minutes, after my husband and I became pen pals.
It has just enough truth to be hysterical, but if you really know any Finnish people, you know they are not as gloomy as all this.
Besides, now that everyone in Finland has 2 cellphones, they talk all the time. The local train never seems very silent.
No one speaks to me directly, though, but I'd think they were mad if they did.

This last lady was the best.Certainly it is better to say "I love you" once in lifetime but to the right person, only if feelings are really there, then to say this to everyone, like Americans, just for the sake of saying it, even without feelings :)...I am going to Finland next month :))))))
