I envy Judy's ability roll the 'r' sound like a cat purring. I'm really trying to learn this skill myself, and I find I can do it better if I impersonate Judy: "Rrr-rrr-rrrutuhtuhtum, rrr-rrr-rrrutuhtuhpum ..." For one thing, being a catwoman, this is ought to be my strength! Then again, I'm only nineteen, and we in our teen years tend to have quite bland and clumsy vocal sounds. I love watching and listening to Judy so much I think I'd like to memorise all her Happy Harry story and that song!
Please, please, please....someone post the entire interview again. I remember seeing it once before, part of loving Judy is just "watching her" whether talking or singing!!
Jack Knew Judy could pull of his little prank or he wouldnt have done it. It would have ruined the show if he did it and Judy and goulet couldnt run with the gag. That show was so in sync and the audience ate it up.. One of my favorite interviews ever of Judy she was dead on that night. I love the 1967 interview too! She at up all the laughs she got.. Her face lit up andshe didnt sing one note!
Love how Judy saved the duet with Goulet with her showmanship. And instead of getting mad she had fun. She loved to laugh. She always lifts my spirit.
@BHW722 I seen the whole show ounce on VHS and the interview was so great they forgot about Goulet who was waiting to come on to join them in the interview. This was classic TV when everything was spontaneous and went with the flow so Judy and company went with the moment. It was so fun to watch she had a story about Orson Welles and Oscar Levant meeting that would make you split your sides open from laughter. Someone uploaded a while ago but then took it off Youtube. :)
@plp1964 Did u see the jack paar judy interview from 1964? both parts are on youtube. The 1962 interview used to be posted but only the second half now is. Check amazon.com they may have it on dvd. I lover her stories too. check out Judy's stories 1&2 clips of her from her showand jack paar show..
I absolutely LOVE this interview . . . Judy looked so sexy here . . . basic black . . . plain and simple. What a great interview . . . and Judy's laugh can't be beat.
bbath7, when Judy made that expression with arm, she was merely making a joke--that they had all turned out "Hollywood-strange" or troubled instead of "swell." She did it for a laugh--a great understated comedienne.
When Judy was young she had those big pretty innocent eyes, and when she got a bit older as in this interview her eyes are sad. She was never old, on 47 when she passed. So sad.
That's Robert Goulet. They had just done an animated musical about a girl cat (Judy) going to Paris. Can't remember the name of the movie, but it was like The Aristocats only better. They're singing one of the songs from that movie.
Talk about ego -- Judy was never out of the public eye at this point. He did not "bring her back"...what an arrogant jerk. :( Judy could, and always did, stand on her own when it came to entertaining.
No, I didn't know her. But that "MGM school story" is an "exaggeration" and Judy's best biographers chronicle her tendency to embellish her life. This is not a crime, but one must approach Miss G's tales of mistreatment, etc. with some caution. As far as Judy was concerned too much was never enough. But, that was part of her great appeal.
This was Judy at her best--slim, but not thin, in great, funny form. Of course, hardly a thing she says is really true. She takes something and enlarges it for effect. In 1945, when Elizabeth Taylor was going to school at MGM, Judy Garland was an adult woman--her school days were long over. As were Lana and Mickey's. But, Judy knew throwing Liz in made it funnier. Judy was a great talent whose relationship with truth was sketchy. She lied. A lot. But, she was a genius! So...we forgive.
I'm trying to find the clip that has Judy telling story of being crowded out by the Tin Man and Scarcerow as they're skipping down YBR while making movie and the director's reaction. It's priceless. I viewed it here a while ago but now can't find it. It was this setting and she was wearing the black dress.
Jack Paar's finest show.Judy was a great storyteller and funny as all hell. I am so happy that I own a copy of it.She was so many things and great at all of them.
He didn't revive her career at all, I think he's patting himself on the back too ferociously here on the QE2. She had a ground breaking sell out tour including the Carnegie Hall concert in 1961 that is still outselling today not to mention her films at that time 'Gay Pur-ee', 'Judgement at Nuremberg', 'A Child is Waiting' (nominated for the oscar best Supporting actress) and 'I could go on singing'. What's he talking about?
I agree, he seems to be taking way too much credit. Obviously, all of the things you cited were much more instrumental in recharging her career. By the time she was on his show, her comeback was in full swing and had been for quite some time. Plus her TV special with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. People always seem to want to take the credit for her achievements, or anybody who's done something wonderful. Maybe a case of bitter grapes?
she's a gay icon because i think many gay men relate to being the underdog, to being sensitive. also she died and 1969, the stonewall right was that night and the gay rights movement was born. that's the legend anyway. also what gay man doesn't like a beautiful womamn who can sing?
I'm openly gay , and the reason I'll ALWAYS love her , is because she's such a great singer , and I'm sure if she hadn't had all the those pills she would have shown what she really was. I feel as though she is a part of me , and not for any reason related to my sexuality , simple because she is wonderful .
If people knew more about Judy's awesome sense of humor they would love her even more. She could be so funny and charming and charismatic. Many of her hollywood friends say they never saw any of her problems because she would always cover it up with humor. She was a hit among the Bogart/Sinatra crowd cause she was so witty and entertaining.Lucy called Judy "the funniest woman in hollywood. She makes me look like a mortician!"Most people seem to remember her as a tragedy who was a good singer sadly.
1965. Paar said he helped revive her career a bit. In the early 60s she needed no help: She broke box-office records in 60-61 on world tour, her '61 album 'Judy at Carnegie Hall' knocked Elvis from Billboard & stayed at No. 1for 13 weeks. Judy won 5 Grammys that year, and then scored an Oscar nomination for Judgment at Nuremberg. Finally her '62 Tv specials (one w/Sinatra & Martin) broke ratings records. All changed when her '63 TV series (up against Bonanza) didn't fly. She never got over that.
That was a funny story. Liza once asked Judy why she didn't show this part of herself mor often. Judy replied that the fans only wanted to see the 'tragic Judy Garland', so, that's all she gave them, except for rare occasions like the one featured in this clip.
Sorry..it is at 3.40..all through 3.51...I am laughing so much I miss the actual time!! THANKS GOD FOR HER TALENT AND SENSE OF HUMOR!!!She shines our life. Carlos.
at 3.30 she was SOOOOO FUUNNNYYYYYY that..litteraly...I am crying of laugher...I can,t stop looking at it....I CAN,T!!! Judy was great!!...God bless her!!! Carlos from Argentina
For the benefit of younger-people who weren't "there", this was not from Paar's Tonight Show, but a series of "Specials" he did for NBC.Growing-up in an industry-family myself, going back several-generations, I loved Garland's story about the comic they shared the bill with -- reminded me of so many stories I would hear thru the family, or their friends. As a child, I really liked Garland 'cause she reminded me of my Aunt Charlotte, who was Jackie Cooper's mother-in-law, and great fun, too! R.J.
As a performer myself I know the difference between your career/life being way down in depths and your ability to go on stage and give a great show.(not that im comparing myslef to la Garland) dont get the two confused. After all you dont wear a plackard round your neck saying BANKRUPT DRUG ADDICT when you go on to do a number.
I love that Judy gets up to show just how fabulous a shape she is in... that was not just 'part of the story'.
I agree with this. Just because she started to look a little rough around the edges at some point, does not discount her performances. Her best stuff was late 50's through the mid-60's...but some people refuse to watch her during that period, or simply watch it and say "Wow, she was so sad then" Not so, each day was different, just as it is in everyone else's life.
Paar is seriously in error about Judy being "way, way down" at this time. He was wonderful with her but had no career impact whatsoever! She was at a career peak, new management, had completed Carnegie Hall, etc. and was plugging a feature length animated feature she did called "Gay Puree" with a score by Arlen/Harburg. Her zest and ebullience speak for themselves!!
There will never be another singer/performer as real and talented as Judy Garland, she definitely was one of a kind and for Jack to say he started up her career again, I don't think so, Judy was never out of popularity, People loved her then and they love her now.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Do you realise that the 'JACK PARR SHOW' was written and rehearsed for a week before it went on the air? There was little ,if any, improvisation allowed. What you see that looks improvised is rehearsed. The comment by Judy where she hangs her arm and shoulder like a cripple is a dig at Deanna Durbin, who had a crippled arm.
I'd never heard that before, I just assumed it was Judy's wit, a slur to all of them about how they turned out. The only thing I'd heard about Deanna Durbin was Judy talking about her unibrow.
The lines that Judy speaks are VERY typical of Judy Garland's candid speech. She had great wit, and tended to exaggerate things like "3 feet high and 2 years old." They may have given her guidelines, but her dialogue to me sounds very typical of her, and not like a Jack Paar construction.
That excerpt was from Paar's Friday evening prime-time series, "THE JACK PAAR PROGRAM", at the time she and co-star Robert Goulet promoted their animated feature "Gay Pur-ee" in December 1962...
That was Judy. People often thought she was drunk when she wasn't. I hope the video shows that she wasn't a "tragic figure." She has problems, for sure, but who doesn't? Most of Judy's issues can be traced to her mother and the studio. But people who knew her well often recall how much she loved to laugh and how affectionate she was. This clip shows both.
THe studios killed them with work when they were young..her and Mickey...gave them speed, kept their dough away from them...they had no cash to play with even when their movies were the top films of the year...What Judy got out of it was the most incredible sense of discipline...trooper does not come close to her and Mr. Rooney...they were really in a class by themselves.
As the reviewer of her Carnegie Hall performance said: There was Jolson and there is Garland and then they broke the mold. We won't see her like again. Actress with a broad range, singer without peer and an entertainer who owned her audiences. She was quite simply the best all around performer of the 20th Century.
Thanks so much for a great video. I watched Jack's show as a child and loved it. It was a dose of nostalgia that makes me long for the days when TV was fun to watch!
this interview also inspired many people to not believe the rumors that she was insane, in fact a review of this interview was ,"picture perfect figure of health."
He revived her career as far as giving her the chance to be herslf on TV, and not in a staged program. People saw her for the first time as she really was without the song
Wonderful clip, although Paar's comment that he "revived her career" is totally ridiculous. This was the period after her 1960-61 world tour and wildly successful Carnegie Hall appearance and one year before her TV show so it is not true that her career was fading. Regardless, we love Jack for showcasing the "World's Greatest Entertainer" !!!!!
Well, you ought to check out other Jack Paar segments. He was an incredible interviewer, way ahead of his time. He had Nixon on his show in the early 60's, and juxtaposed him with Cassius Clay/Mohammed Ali. He got Mohammed Ali to adlib poetry to Nixon's piano playing. Interviewed Castro in a human way during the Bay of Pigs crisis. My impression of him was that he was very fair and genuinely liked people.
There was a DVD release several years ago called "The JACK PAAR COLLECTION: featuring the documentary "Smart Television: The Best of Jack Paar." It has the PBS documentary, plus a couple of full shows, including a Judy Garland appearance from England and a PRICELESS one with Bette Davis where she tells Jonathan Winters to "Go to Hell" on the air! Snatch it up if you can!
Judy could charm the pants off of anybody. She was such a presence. I hold that if she didn't have that voice she would have made a phenomenal comedienne. Nobody could tell a story like Judy. I love watching her just reel them in. Great video.
I had the privilege of meeting Jack when I was television station manager on the QE2 and he was a passenger. He gave me several reels of all the guests that appeared on his show. I'll edit Part IV of the interview with more clips as soon as I get the time.
hey - does anyone out there know what happened to all the other judy clips? johnny carson, merv, etc. plus all of the newsreel footage - what happened?
paar is a little misleading in his comments. judy garland, at this point in her career, was, argueably, the most successful performer in the world of entertainment. she had already completed her carnegie hall tour, two feature films and had been nominated for an oscar a year earlier.the awards and accolades kept pouring in. largely due to this one appearance and it's success, judy was offered one of the most lucrative contracts in cbs history for her own television series
I'm afraid success does not equal money. Yes she was and remains a phenomenal talent and success. Several biographers, however, well-document her financial woes during this time.
I don't care if she's making up her stories or not -she's absolutely charming!

@sissillian1 Thank God, somebody finally noticed that! Judy was a sophisticated MGM star by the time little Miss Taylor came along.

Very true. Dont't forget her TV series as well, which gave us more songs to enjoy!

There will never be another singer/performer as real and talented as Judy Garland, she definitely was one of a kind and for Jack to say he started up her career again, I don't think so, Judy was never out of popularity, People loved her then and they love her now.

well you know what jack paar? I don't forgive you. lol. You deff did not get Judy Garland popular again Judy Garland got Judy Garland popular again.

is this a follow-up to her drunken interview with him?

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Do you realise that the 'JACK PARR SHOW' was written and rehearsed for a week before it went on the air?

Paar didnt revive her career - the Carnegie Hall concert did

Great clip - she could really perform!

Hi Karen,
I had the privilege of meeting Jack when I was television station manager on the QE2 and he was a passenger. He gave me several reels of all the guests that appeared on his show. I'll edit Part IV of the interview with more clips as soon as I get the time.

hey - does anyone out there know what happened to all the other judy clips? johnny carson, merv, etc. plus all of the newsreel footage - what happened?
sglynch 4 years ago
paar is a little misleading in his comments. judy garland, at this point in her career, was, argueably, the most successful performer in the world of entertainment. she had already completed her carnegie hall tour, two feature films and had been nominated for an oscar a year earlier.the awards and accolades kept pouring in. largely due to this one appearance and it's success, judy was offered one of the most lucrative contracts in cbs history for her own television series
sglynch 4 years ago 3
I'm afraid success does not equal money. Yes she was and remains a phenomenal talent and success. Several biographers, however, well-document her financial woes during this time.
