Needs subtitles: Shantanu invests Devavrata as crown prince/heir, and the boy grows into a man. Shantanu, always in trouble down by the river, spots Satyavati, fisherman's daugher and ferrywoman, and falls in love with her. When he asks her of her father, the man says no. The prince must renounce his birthright, and her children must inherit, or

no deal. Shantanu is outraged, and storms out.

His son notices he is out of sorts, and finds out why. Here Bhishma takes his vow of renunciation.
