Sutherland/Horn..... this was a musical match made in heaven and blessed by all the gods. Despite the unfortunate quality here Thank you for posting.... it is better than nothing. People need to see what genius, dedication and perfection was as it no longer exists. These people became legends and stars not by media advertising budgets and hard sell tactics but by their incredible talent and hard work.
@Operastar17 Yes, isn't it a tragedy that for the finest performers and performers there were no digital recorders, cam etc. Now every squeak is recorded for all time but no longer the genius that once was.
I first heard this video in 1979 and have loved it ever since! I love heavy metal music but I love this just as much. I consider that this was the "heavy metal" of the time it was written. They both utilize the voice to its fullest.
What gives us this great singing is great voices followed by work, work, work with gifted guidance. Not everyone has such guidance especially in the form of a partner as these two did. Aren't we lucky to have witnessed this marvel along with all the other marvels of the 20th century. There are very few following in their footsteps. Maybe that will change. I hope so for all the young singers need this to look up to.
It's hard to imagine two such glorious voices made for each other, truely peaches and cream. What Sutherland does in warm legato, Horne matches in spades with machine gun accuracy. It is really wonderful to have shared the planet with these two. This type of music makes this whole shakey conspiracy called civilization worth it, even with technical problems and poor engineering. Bravi to these Grande Dames
Incomparable perfection that we NEVER hear the likes of again! Would today's" ho dee hum oopsy daisy what the hell was that" mediocre singers please take note ? This is singing at its very best and Brava Joan and Marilyn!!!!
Since we agree this is the best singing and the Best singers then HELP me!!
I have a horrible time of relating other singers to Joan & Marilyn. Also I think that todays singers OVer ornament the melodies its only to decorate note cover it up! Does anyone else agree with me on this??
I like it that Bonynge took a short break from 6:00 to 7:00 and then lifted his arms to bring the orchestra in upon his wife's trill. These ladies are such potent examples of the art of bel canto. I haven't heard anyone these days coming close to these two. Simply amazing!
You aren't kidding - they don't make 'em like this anymore and if in this new century they do, I won't be around to hear 'em so I am so fortunate to hear such a great coloratura duet sung to perfection by the best.
Unbelieveably gorgeous. Thank God this was captured on tape, as I doubt we'll ever hear signers at this level of artistry ever again. Simply magnificent!

Bel Canto at its finest. The only thing that annoys me is the recording. Is there another version of this in better quality?

these girls ALWAYS looked awsome. The concert Sutherland did with Pavarotti (i think in New York), with the green dress and cape...FABULOUSE~! ^_^

Wow .. thanks for posting. I have a reel to
reel from the 60s of a broadcast from
Chicago Lyric with Sutherland and Horne.
I listened to this part over and over, the
audience went crazy. I played it for some
friends of mine, a couple. He said it was ok, she said it was "wierd" - I never forgot that. She later joined the circus.

I certainly hope so, and that such quality isn't flustered by the amazing amount of hurdles that present themselves in the business!
