  • This is a lovely performance. I liked this aria so much I arranged it for ukulele. Hopefully that does not count as an insult. The arrangement works well on guitar too.

  • Those oboes... God (and Bach) be praised!

  • She's a master, she makes it looks easy. I'm jealous!

  • Halleluja!

  • I've sung this and my god her breath control on some of the passages is pretty astounding

  • Glorious as always Ms K, x

Saludos

  • gracias marascar, sos una persona muy generosa.

  • Who cares about her pronunciation? I love the music.

  • nope - she's right: in English it would sound like Sen-KA.

  • Beautiful.

  • When she pronounces "Senke dich"she purses her lips as if to do an umlaut; is this what a german speaker would normally do? senkoor dich?

At any rate, we must become comfortable with all sorts of people singing all sorts of languages; the price we pay for universality is a little clumsiness. I hear Marjana Lipovsek singing Messiah in English, and I say, good for her.

  • Nein, dass ist nicht normal.Sie ist nicht "native speaker" in Deutsch.

  • you could be a little more kind .... a Brazilian like me would never be so presumptuous like you.

  • i'm sure i'll get some thumbs down for this, but i have to say it- frizzy.

  • @risris1 Frizzy and beautifull

  • She's so good! I song this aria and this is one of the most beautiful renditions of this aria, I think. perfect

  • and J.S.B is perfect!

  • Should I comment at all? Is there a point? Can words actaully express how divine she is? I don't think so. I will only say this - SHE IS PERFECT!

  • amazing

  • Dame Kirkby, I love your performances.

  • Nice!

  • Emma kirkby is truly the master of the baroque coloratura!

  • Emma's voice isn't very suitable for the German language. I prefer to hear her singing in Italian, English and Latin

  • You are allowed your opinions. But,as far as Emma Kirkby's voice being unsuitable for the German language is concerned, your comment is sheer rubbish! Her German is correct, clear and well articulated. What else do you want?

  • I don't agree your opinion. Emma's voice is too thin to articulate the German language in a convincing manner. But I adore her English permances.

  • You are also allowed your opinion. Emma Kirkby is judged by experts as being the foremost interpretor of Baroque vocal music - in any langugae. Do you sing? Or do you know anything at all about singing?

  • I agree with dailung. Emma Kirkby is the exact type of voice Bach envisioned to sing this music. Bach wrote specifically for this voice type; obviously, they sing in German fine.

  • owzla, are you German?

Saying that someone's voice "isn't very suitabe for the German language" or any other language is either prejudice or stupidity.

  • @rarems

I'm Dutch. Some voices don't match with particular languages.

  • @owzla : And the Dutch are so straightforward about such truths.

  • This is an interesting concept. I agree that she does embody the typical sound associated with Romance languages. Her German pronunciation is good, but (if I'm understanding you correctly) this is less about diction and more about the timbre and resonance common to what would be considered the "German sound." Emma tends toward the bel canto style instead.

My question is, how does one do justice to Baroque music and produce a more German sound? I don't have the answer.

  • This vid is really worth watching! Hooray for Dame Emma Kirkby!!!

  • Easy, wonderful, perfect = Emma Kirkby

  • Lovely stuff by Emma Kirby...one of the best!!!

  • Love this aria

  • thank you

  • Of course, one of the best-known and respected early music sopranos in the world! As usual, a performance that cannot be surpassed.

  • no se podía esperar menos :D

  • Nuevamente espléndida Emma Kirkby.
