Well, I can't quite remember if this was referring to Afghanistan or Iraq, but I once heard a military service man call up during a radio discussion regarding people's debate over whether the troops should be over there (and this was around 2001-2003 somewhere) and not only did he say that people SHOULD discuss it so that we're sure...but he also said that sometimes, when HE was over there the soldiers would be together and one would say, "Why are we here?" because they weren't even always sure

He's right, the vast majority of the enlisted men in Iraq and Afghanistan don't have the analytical capabilities or historical knowledge to understand the large-scale causes of those wars. Being on the ground fighting it gives you a certain perspective that others lack, but it isn't one that we should consider being the end-all opinion of the direction an entire country takes in said war.

I agree with Belzer that soldiers under fire are not the best people to justify or condemn a war. No one questions their courage, bravery, honor, and dedication. But Belzer was wrong to generalize on such a sensitive issue. While there probably are 19 and 20 yr old kids who couldnt find a job, there are just as many, if not more, of college educated soldiers. The balance is probably the same in the American population. Belzer was obviously wrong in this case.
