He's the Prince of the Saiyan race! This was an entire race naturally strong and powerful warriors that easily dominated most other specie. Then at the top of it all is Vegeta, the Prince of all Saiyans. Being the strongest of this feared race of warriors is definitely something to take pride in. Yeah, Goku is stronger then him and that fact hurts his pride but to a warrior, pride is everything which is why he tries so desperately to restore it.

Vegeta needed Babidi's power upgrade, he thought, to match Goku. So, Vegeta needed to side with the evil team in this case. And, at this point in time, Vegeta is trying to make himself believe that the rest of the world/universe going under means nothing compared to the injury to his pride he's suffered from Goku being better than him. Later on, we see Vegeta can't go on acting like he believes others' lives don't mean anything to him anymore when he finally does face off against Buu.
