layer masks. just search "how to use layer masks"

basically you paint out the part of a layer that's not going to be affected by the mask, and what ever you brush won't be affected but, your shirt for example. you should look it up though. it's more to it than that.

I've been in graphic design classes, and I found this to be a useful review, however, i lost a lot of belief when you totally dissed the pen tool. Now I know that may be more of an illustrator tool, but none the less, it's one of the most important tools, do not diss the pen yo, you probably just aren't that good with it.
