a good idea is to duplicate (ctrl + J) apply the effect then use the opacity to control the how it's going to look (up around 30% or 50%)

Great tutorial! Another step you can take to enhance the eye and give is a more glassy appearance is to select the iris, go "layer via copy", go to the High Pass filter, put in a value of 20-30 (depending on your image), hit OK. Then change the blend mode from normal to soft light. VOILA!

@1337epsilon just make the same he did just in the end you stay in the selection and additionaly go to Image > Adjustments > Hue/Sturation and there check the colorize box and now you can make your eye green, red, purple whatever you like :D

When I use the dodge and the burn tool on the eyes nothing appears? I tried changing some settings, but nothing seems to work, which is strange because I have been able to make these eyes a while ago. Anybody who knows what to do?

@hannahfog well you have to have it on the correct layer, and sometimes you have to change what you're burning/dodging, so if you change between that shadow/midtone/highlights it should work

Colour balance has more control but hue/saturation is easier :)

Just make sure the eye/eyes are selected ^_^
