Leno did very well at the previous time slot doing the Tonight Show surpassing Kimmel and Letterman. Conan demanded the show and so they gave it to him or risk losing him.

Conan tanked, couldn't beat Letterman in the ratings and Leno tanked as well.

I don't understand why everybody is gunning for Jay Leno. He is a stand up guy, happily married, does a lot of charity. His humour is mostly good, not caustic and acerbic,unlike Kimmel's or Letterman's. He did not have any sex scandals unlike Letterman.

you could actually hear the applause and laughter during the clip they showed. I don't know the guy's name, he's the one that stands in front of a monitor and makes comments as opposed to sits behind a desk. he states listen to what happened as the audience sat in "stunned silence". And then Kimmel makes his joke and you hear the same response as here, its just that the length is cut really short for time. It seemed strange to me they would be silent so I sought out the clip on You Tube.
